New laptop
Hello,

So my last year in school is slowly coming to an end and (hopefully) I will be going to university next September to study Computer Science.

I will be needing to replace my netbook so I'll be getting a new laptop, but I am not sure what I should get.

I'm looking for something that has a dedicated GPU and a quad-core processor so I am able to run LFS nicely and perform other tasks quickly. 6-8GB of RAM would be required minimally.

Also looking for something from 13" to 15" as I don't want a big 17" laptop to carry around.

Any recommendations or particular models that I should look for?

Thanks in advance.
Price range dictates everything.

I would say about €700 max but I might stretch it a little.
And where can you buy the laptop from?
I'm afrade you can't get anything decent in that price range, you can get a decent laptop with quad-core cpu, but I doubt that it will have a decent gpu, you could always settle for a i5.
Or you could always check used stuff.

From Estonia I found a new HP Elitebook 8460P for 729€, but that's Estonian price, don't know the prices where you want to buy the laptop from.

So my Asus N75S with a i5 2.5GHz,8GB RAM,nVidia GF GT635M,750GB HDD and 17" FullHD display doesn't count as decent? Payed for it 700€...
GT635 isn't a decent GPU.

€700 is a shade under £600, which would get you a laptop with a dedicated GPU - but not necessarily a high spec one.

I could link you to some ones from the UK but that wouldn't help much - could you post a link to some LT / IRE suppliers you could use?

Maybe not for 3D creators, but enough for me to play some old games like GTA4,CIV5,LFS - with almost maxxed out settings.
Why do I even bother to put myself in conversation with arrogant computer geeks that most likely spend most of his money to upgrade his e-penis? Sorry Povo for littering your thread...

Bumping this thread.

So I finally ordered a new laptop today...

Here are the specs:

MSI GE40 chassis with my chosen specifications on http://pcspecialist.co.uk

Cost me €781 inc. shipping to Ireland. If you chose the same spec right now it would cost €800 (damn exchange rates).

Decided at the last minute to not get a DVD drive and choose an empty HDD caddy instead. I will put in my SSD along with that 250gb drive into it.

I think it was a good deal overall
Holy crap, that's quite a steal you got there!
