LFSRM LS GTI

Hi,

I thought it could be a good idea to start something to kill time before the mod support test patch, so I started a project to test some ideas and why not a practice opportunity since I am not super comfortable in making low res assets.

It's a sort of concept for a newer version or a replacement for XFG, basically it's your typical everyday 2002~2008 small city car with a relatively powerful engine (GTI).

I am still undecided about of the engine configuration or other technical aspects, let's say it will have around 170 hp max (for now).

So here are some pictures of the design, I will probably change/add some details later when I make some progress but this is mostly the final version.

Regarding technical specs,you should consider a "basis version" which could fit in the current GTi class - 3rd (and who knows,maybe in time 4th and 5th) car would make racing more interesting in that class. And maybe the top version (same engine,just turbocharged to make it real life like) could fit in TBO class? Aaand of couse a race-spec version could fit in NGT class and some crazy 4WD super version can be used as RX car...
Just throwing out ideas,maybe you're interested to fill some of those.

Pretty much finished with the exterior, but there is a slight issue ( major one in fact ), the exterior alone is 36k triangles, so I guess I must compromise in the overall shapes quality , unless I make an UF1-like interior .

That looks like a fun car! Nice to see some more realistic and modern cars being created.

Yes, it's supposed to house a logo texture.

Imho, only the front and the back of the car should be detailed, leaving less detailed the other parts (top, sides, bottom) that are more rarely seen during a race.

You pretty much said it ! I will surely do some more optimizations after the completion the interior base mesh.

Pack it in with performance like XFG and XRG and it will be MEGA!

And second one, I like how it's keeping XFG's DNA :
-The overall form of the car
-The way it look like grabbing designs from some IRL cars
(front look like fiats stilo/punto, rear a mixture of a duster and 208)

Can't you try, for the interior, to take XFG's actual and make some slight modern changes? It's how most of constructors were doing in the past

Worst case scenario, you will make a gen2 of it with redesigned interior on the future

Thanks, I'm still figuring out the interior shapes and dimensions, so the only thing I can guarantee is it will retain the central "punto-like" air vents style with of course some (many) changes.

Plus there is some issues I (maybe) need to fix with the front window shape, when I tried to test out the car dimension in-game, I found the interior front view a little bit claustrophobic for my taste :



I need some opinions about that.

EDIT : I think it's actually fine when compared to an Audi A1, which is nearly similar in size :

Honestly I think it looks good the way it is. That "claustrophobic" interior suits the modern style of cars.

I have to say, lfsrm, I'm pretty impressed with the car design and the speed of your progress so far! For constructing a fictional car, you really have a natural feel for it.

Car interiors can be fiddly to build without any frame of reference, but I've found that viewing your progress in VR can help.

Thank you,It means a lot to me! I literally grow up playing LFS, the game never left my hard drive!, you guys are an inspiration for many of us!

And thank you guys for letting us experiment with the game engine, there isn't many games that offers such accessible modding tools! it's definitively a great thing for the community !

The interior is trickier than I thought, especially since the model needs to be driveable in-game, I have only a rigged human body shape and some pictures for (rough) references, VR would definitely help (since it's also compatible with blender) if it was available for sale over here..

But again this is a great learning opportunity !

Thanks for the compliment, I think with the amount of resources around the net now, it's easier and faster to learn something new compared to some years ago.

Finding time and motivation is still a big obstacle...

Well, the cockpit view is not that bad. It is depending on which FOV you are using. I usually play with 82deg, which is a little bit zoomed in comparison to 90deg by default. You can make a windscreen a bit higher and adjust a seat position. If you can make the windscreen side frame thinner that would help also.

In the future I'm planning to try to do an 3d original model based on real brand.

Here are some screens of what I completed so far for the interior base mesh :





There is still a few things I need to complete :

- modeling front/rear seats
- interior doors details
- finishing the steering wheel details (buttons etc)
- interior central mirror
- seat belt
- interior floor mesh
- Maybe a separate mesh for button texture ?
- adjusting the size of some elements (windshield wipers..)
- and a lot of optimizations, right now the whole car is over 70k.


The steering wheel size seems a little bit small, when compared to the rb4 it doesn't look at all like a 35cm wheel, I thought the size I used was pretty standard for road cars.

This looks amazing, and like it was mentioned before, it kept the DNA of the XFG, really solid work.

About the exterior problem, if you get rid of the antenna, solve the problem? Or it has to be a more drastic change, to be able to do a good interior?

Yes, I still have to finish some parts of the interior.


Often I don't like the design of some elements, so I tend to redo things midway which drag the whole project, plus I did the mistake of doing a high res version using subdivision, I should've started modeling the whole lowpoly car manually, because now cleaning the mesh will take even more time, and time is something that I lack nowadays.

But that's just my inexperience modeling lowpoly game assets, that's why I think this project is a very valuable learning experience.

No it's just optimization, sacrificing some surface smoothness to meet lfs's triangles limit.

This project is VERY impressive. Definitely looking forward to drive it. You're now at the stage, where 20% of work takes 80% of time with optimizing and finishing touches. Keep it up

Well since I finished with the optimizations, it's time to mess up with the editor..




Still importing and organizing the car parts and materials, after that I will dedicate some (alot) of time to create the car textures.

This is really cool. It looks like a legitimate European hatchback, which could be said of original xfg for sure. I really like how you have carried over enough styling cues for them to obviously be related. You should post some images of the two cars side by side.

The door mirrors are perhaps too small relative to the size of the car, but that's all I could offer in criticism.

Yes you are totally right, if you look at the more recent interior WIP images, you can notice that I made them a little bit bigger.

If I remember, 2006 was the year when the EU forced the car manufacturers to adopt a minimum mirrors size for safety purpose, so compared to most modern cars, I took the liberty to not respect this requirement since this car is supposed to be a little bit older than that.

What I need is some spare time to quickly export a wip model to check and make sure the ergonomics are usable once and for all.

But yes, there is some mistakes I made with the general car proportions that I want to summarize when I finish this project, as a reminder and advices for me and for those who are interested in cars creation.

A 1.6 NA high revving with 130hp or a 1.4T/1.6T with 150hp in my opinion would be ideal for this.

Weight between 1030 kg (if NA)and 1090 (if Turbo).

In my test version it's a 170hp 1.8L 4 cylinder, 1070kg.

Exactly my thought, however Authors 1.8 N/A 170hp sounds nice too

Well the logo wasn't made specifically for the car, it's my personal logo (for artworks and such).

I will also change the name of the car, XF2 (XF3 or XR4 etc) are names that could be used by the devs in the future.

it is indeed very nice ! Really matching a real car that may exist !
For the engine, I would also be more expecting a modern small turbo engine. Like the 1.3 from its ancestor with more modern power output or even a downsized one like a 1.2 or 1.0 with 3 cyl producing something like 150hp .

Flotch on engine choice, a 3 cylinders turbo would fit nicely for a 2014+ car, but it's supposed to be older than that (Euro 4 era), so a more in line with the 1.4/1.6 4 cylinders turbo at around 140/150 crank hp for hatchbacks.

I see your point and indeed the magical 3cyl era came to life with Ford 10 years ago and the 1.0 ecoboost
As this car intends to be mid-2000, the turbo engines were not really used in these kind of vehicles (non-diesel of course). So indeed a 1.8 or even a 2.0 NA is probably even more appropriate (i.e. : a Fiesta ST was having a 2.0 producing 150hp, a swift sport was having a 1.6 doing 125hp...)

I submitted a WIP for review, I need some feedbacks about the handling since I'm not really confident about the physics side of the mod.

Looking great in-game overall (the design is subjective).
I would like to have a two color rims.

EDIT: the handling seems fine to me (a keyboard user )

I meant two color rims, not only two color border / whole rim.

setup wise, there's Traction control available, but why it turned off by default?

might consider to turn it on as default instead? anyway great car handling ! feels good to hotlapping at Rockingham definitely 5 stars rating for this !

I think I will just offer the three customization options, rims ring and back and the front spoke.

There is also an issue with LOD3 which doesn't fit the body shape very well.

I thought it could be better to offer the option since this car is from an era where ESP started to be pretty much standard, why it's turned off by default ? well that was my personal preference since it's way more rewarding to drive with the thing off.

Physics wise, for the engine I would see more the car having a redline at 7500 or 8000 rpm. I know LFS original cars (fictional ones) have a quite high redline, but sounds a bit fantasy to have 9000 in a small gti car
Regarding the base setup (not to race), I made some quick testing and by softening the springs/arb, getting a bit more ride height, less camber, a shorter 1st gear (road car ) and a basic viscous lsd (open diff not really good with current physics), it feels very cool . Brilliant !

Physics wise I feel like the car is way too powerful and grippy for what I'm thinking it should be.
As Flotch said, I think the redline should be toned down to 7000 rpm, and max power to 130/140 bhp. I played with the car with a 12-14% power restriction and it felt more fun and realistic to drive.
I agree that the car should have the option to disable the TC, but I feel like the stock setup should have it enabled, with an agressive 5% max slip allowed, just like a car like this would have out of the factory.
As for the grip, I felt the car was more appropriate with the "NORMAL" tires suited on instead of the "SUPER"

Anyways, looking forward to try out the evolution, keep up the good work mate

EDIT: Small thing visually, I feel like the car is really large, but looking at the dimensions in game, it seems to be around 1.72/1.74m so same width as a 2012 Peugeot 208. Maybe it's the mirrors ? They seems really small

EDIT2: I also feel like having a trailing arm for the rear suspension (just like the original XFG has) would fit more the econobox hatchback from this era, and still used on this type of car to this day.

It's true that it feels more planted than what some of you people expected, the thing is a car doesn't feel the same when drove near its limit, which also reveal its flaws, and since I m not really good at stressing out a car, I thought having a "too balanced" specs as a first version and as a base to start with and try to make a little bit more sensational down the road (with people inputs), without scarifying how it handle as it's supposed to be a well balanced GTI.

I think you are right, now that I checked other similar car, the rear suspension type doesn't make sense.

I really want to keep the power output as it is, but before any final decision I need to try the thing with the changes first.

And don't get me started about the body proportions , there is so many mistakes I made, especially with the interior, one of them is what you mentioned already, that "too large" impression, it's because the inside body panels aren't "stuffed" enough, side parts of the interior lack thickness, plus there is some elements that need to be enlarged... but that's something I want to correct for my next projects.

OMG this car desing represents modern XFG generation so well but I think it's a slighty to big. Look how small driver is compared to interior and seat.

The car general dimensions are fine (compared to other small hatchbacks), it's the car width around the windows/pillars area that are a bit too large, that's why I should've gave some more thickness to the interior panels and narrowed the whole top of the car when I started this project.

it's fascinating how interiors ergonomics expose all the flaws of exterior design !

1 - strange, I will see what's up with that
2 - do you find it hard to drive ? Or it's just a personal opinion?
3 - how? Does the ffb feels weird ? Could you be more precise about that if you don't mind?
4 - that's one tricky subject, sound in general is very setup dependent, for me personally I wanted to stay as far as possible from "racy" or aggressive engine sound, since I can't really control how it sounds at higher rpm, unless you go full bang with it and make it sound like a race car, I mean it's hard for me to give nuances to the engine sound with the actual lfs sound engine (eg: quieter at lower rpm, screamy at higher rpm).

This got me confused, original LFS cars are using positive caster, not negative.

For example XR GT:

I have no idea why it renders like that, if there were a shader with less specular maybe I could fix this problem.

Yes of course, you can do whatever you want with the engine sound, just keep in mind this is still a GTI, a civilian car that is supposed to sound somehow sporty without going overboard.

I double checked the left and right indicators mesh colors, everything seems fine ( the mesh color is white ), there is nothing I can do for now unless if I just apply an orange color to the base mesh, which is not something I want for the front/rear light style to be honest :s.

Are you using a Direct drive wheel ? I changed the caster value in the latest version, it didn't improve the ffb feels ?

You can add a duplicate for l_rind called l_rind1 (both the mesh and the map), which will overlap l_rind when the turn lights are off. Works for all lights (l_find, l_rind etc.).

When off - will use l_rind1 and when on - will use l_rind, but both should share the same page (texture).
l_rind1 can be red, and the l_rind can be yellow (only when on).

You can add a duplicate for l_rind called l_rind1 (both the mesh and the map), which will overlap l_rind when the turn lights are off. Works for all lights (l_find, l_rind etc.).

When off - will use l_rind1 and when on - will use l_rind, but both should share the same page (texture).
l_rind1 can be red, and the l_rind can be yellow (only when on).

I tried your trick but it doesn't work ingame for obscure reason, which is surprising since it shows a completely different result in the editor.

seems like LFS doesn't like white indicators, I guess I will just change the texture color to orange and be done with it.

EDIT : I had to restart the game for it to finally load the texture, but still the result is totally different than what I have in the editor :

I feel that's more reactive maybe 1450-1500 if 1750 is too much higher? But this is just my feeling, i don't know if it's real.

Anyway, the changes done are very good , the car feels nicer, even if the base setup makes it quite brutal by losing the back (clutch pack lsd is increasing the thing). Anyway, as expected, it looks beautiful ... this and the RB4 2.0 are clearly beauties ! Can't wait to have the graphical updates on the tracks to admire these !!

Idle RPM is not that high on road car. 800-900 is quite ok on such car, even if the engine size would allow lower. 1st gear shall be short : usually you expect reaching 50-55km/h max in the limiter, what makes it not really usable when 'driving' unless you are stopped and expect to move the car.

Which is weird since I used pretty reasonable dimensions .

Anyway, mistakes were prone to happen since it's my first modding project, I learned alot by doing this car and I hope I won't make the same mistakes if I ever make another LFS mod .

To be fair, a modern day C3 dwars a Saxo or visa as well, modern cars increased alot in size to account for the safety of people in the car and pedestrians

Yeah, cars just keep getting bigger and bigger. I think the LFSRM LS GTI is in line with the XF two generations later.

I agree with the point but aren't lfs original cars from the 90s ? I would expect less differences in size even if of course the xf2 has to be bigger as it is produced (😁) around 10 years later.

I put a picture taken on my polo coupé from 1989 next a ds3 : yes the ds3 is of course bigger, but it is not that huge anyway. At least, looking at the XF2 next the XF GTi gives the impression that the XF2 would be an SUV
So lfsrm, as you are certainly more expert on this topic : do you think LFS cars could maybe be too "small/narrow" compare to a classic value ? As I am sure you did some great computation to make the XF2 looks real.
Maybe comparing it to a real car like the raceabout on which the real dimensions are known would probably highlight if some tricks in the computation done by Eric have been done

I m nowhere near an expert even tho car design is something I dreamed to do as a career since a long time, but being born in this country is something that limited my possibilities greatly...

As for the XF2, I think I was too generous with the car width, 10 cms less and it would probably give a way more coherent dimensions, plus the car width around the windows area should be narrower too (and the side windows length too):




because like said previously, with the progress that car manufacturers made in passive security, cars have way more "thicker" bodies which make them larger than older cars, this is something I didn't translate as realistically as I hoped.

As a test project, it opened my eyes on some elements that I used to neglect when it comes to vehicles creation, definitively modding a car into a simulator is a good way for me to improve this hobby of mine, If I ever create another car, It will definitely be an improvement over this project.

Please, someone at LFS hire this guy!

Regarding feedback,I have couple from making the skin - it was confusing that one side is a bit stretched comparing to other side,which means it's a bit difficult to make both sides symetric. And on LOD2 the right side is shown mirrored. Also LOD3 (and with it the physics/hitbox) seems to be bigger than actual model on rear part.
Having an event coming right away,a quick hotfix would not be apropriate,so these are just suggestions for future.

Handled pretty much as expected, haven't driven a car like this in real life but setting it up wasn't that bad. Maybe having peak power just against the redline is a little bit odd for a road-going car.

You can’t change it, wheels with an incline in the spokes forwards/afterwards look mounted wrong on 1 side, cuz LFS just places your rims all the same way

But if you choose 'Yes' and there is a rim logo - it's mirrored wrong on the left side.
