Quote from BlueFlame :Read above. There's a balance. If you can choose more grip mechanically over aerodynamically then it benefits you MORE on corner exit.

That isn't the issue here though. You initially said it wouldn't help and would possibly hinder. Then you changed your tune when presented with an opposing view.

Quote from BlueFlame :You're right that it gives more grip and increases traction but it's also a moving brick. You might have given yourself traction but aerodynamics cause drag.

If there's one thing that Red Bull has consistently demonstrated through the last few years it's that they're willing to sacrifice straightline speed at almost every single track (Monza being among the small number of possible exceptions) for better cornering performance. That cornering performance includes the blown diffuser.

Quote from BlueFlame :???? I'm saying the exact opposite.

So why exactly would more downforce (from the blown diffuser) slow your acceleration? It's increasing rear grip (and therefore traction) and allowing you to put down more power.

Quote from BlueFlame :The lower the speed. The less the difference.

No. The exact opposite is true. The more effective your blown diffuser is on power at low speed the greater the advantage you have compared to the other cars.

Quote from BlueFlame :When talking about exiting the corner [applying throttle whilst still turning] depending on the speed of said corner will depend on the effect of the mechanical grip relative to the speed.

When talking about straight line acceleration then the only difference between cars would how the cars launch from standing still to moving but once moving there will be next to no difference in the cars [engine performance aside].

Once again: No. You're ignoring the performance impact of a blown diffuser in low speed acceleration (straightline or exiting a corner).

Quote from BlueFlame :Let us not forget, mechanical grip AND aero for that matter helps you much more in corners and in braking compared to acceleration.

True, but any extra downforce you can generate compared to your rivals from apex to corner exit and through the traction zone will add up to significant time over a single lap, nevermind a race distance. If you can, say, gain half a tenth of a second per traction event (number pulled from thin air for purpose of discussion) then on a track with 10+ traction events you've made have a second on your rivals.

Quote from BlueFlame :Also a blown diffuser isn't going to help you on exit... If anything it's just gonna slow down your acceleration.

Are you serious? You're saying F1 cars aren't traction limited when accelerating from a slow corner? Really?

Quote from BlueFlame :Yea, because aero plays a part at a hairpin.. lol wtf

Blown diffusers. There is also, of course, a difference in mechanical grip.

Quote from BlueFlame :Well in terms of a TC situation [low speed] every car will have the basically the same grip levels... they all run the same tyre after all.

No. If you can't understand why this is wrong then you haven't been following F1 very carefully for the last few years.

Quote from ACCAkut :On the biker that got run over ... don't you have to wear a helmet and protection in the US? You have to here in Germany.

Some states have an irrational fear of paternalistic legislation like mandatory helmets for motorcycle riders and seatbelts for drivers. Some states, for instance, have a seat belt law such that an officer can't stop a driver just because they're not wearing a seat belt. However, if they get stopped for, say, running a red light and they're not wearing a seat belt then it becomes punishable.

Incidentally, I don't intend to unfairly mock the dead, but read this for an exercise in applied irony re: helmet laws.

Quote from BlueFlame :Everyone inbetween is at LEAST within 2 seconds of Ferrari but RB/Vettel are 2seconds quicker than them?

The problem with that is that you can't really say Vettel was 2 secs quicker than anyone else in the race, for a number of reasons.

A few resources to consider:

Questioning Red Bull's pace in Singapore?
Singapore Grand Prix: Race Notes

Because of the rhythm of the race (including SC), the fact Rosberg was artificially slow (tyre debris / inconsistent pace) and that Vettel saved a set of super softs by only running once in Q3 all came together to make Vettel appear vastly superior in the race. Of course, he was the quickest guy out there, but you can't simply say he was 2s quicker than everyone else; the circumstances don't support that kind of assertion.

Quote from BlueFlame :In regards to tyre shake Dennis, it could be a differential or drive-shaft imbalance because the tyre tracks are consistent and then they just seem to shake madly after 20meters. Although the more obvious prognosis is that the track has some washboard bumps there and was causing the rear tyres to skip over them.

As I said above, look at the seam between the new patch and the old track surface. That's really what caused the wheel hop and the oscillation.

The Webber pic from Canada above has already been debunked months ago as wheel hop. Note that the treads are solid until the rear tyres cross the seam of the new patch of track surface to the old. Also, if you think this is actually a traction control system it's doing a horrible job. The Vettel 'sound' video from Singapore is just cylinder deactivation / cut. Unfortunately the desire that some people have to discover Red Bull are cheating causes them to lose any kind of rationality.

Quote from Wikipedia :The journal has also been accused of promoting fringe viewpoints and speculative viewpoints on astrobiology, astrophysics, and quantum physics. Skeptical blogger and biologist PZ Myers said of the journal "... it isn't a real science journal at all, but is the... website of a small group... obsessed with the idea of Hoyle and Wickramasinghe that life originated in outer space and simply rained down on Earth." The journal has responded that the paradigm "life on Earth came from Earth" is like a religious belief.

Gender has nothing to do with what happened on the track. You can debate if there's political motivation to what happened off-track, but at least do it maturely.

Quote from tristancliffe :But the Clerk of the Course felt that as my video didn't show her until after impact, and her video doesn't show me at all (because the camera FOV doesn't show what's alongside), that I was officially to blame. 2 points on my licence.

Have you shown any of the officials the video from Silverstone where you go to pass her and she...erm, doesn't leave a lot of room?

Another somewhat obscure request from me. I'm looking for any information on what I remember as an early-to-mid '90s dance song. The only distinctive feature I remember is that it used a sample of some of the dialogue from Terminator 2, specifically John Connor's line of "I see her crying sometimes". Unfortunately that's all the information I can provide. Another long shot request, I suppose, but worth asking anyway. Thanks for any help.

edit: There may be other sampled dialogue or audio from Terminator 2 in the song too.

edit2: With help from Bean0 on the #liveforspeed IRC channel we've found some songs which have Terminator / Terminator 2 samples, but which sadly aren't the song I'm looking for:

Metalheads - Terminator
N.R.G. - The Terminator
The Object - Theme From Terminator 2
dreaMagic - Terminator 2
Paffendorf - Terminator 2 Theme

A few pictures from this year's Strathaven Balloon Festival. Unfortunately I was only able to attend on Friday and Saturday morning (since I was at the McLaren Technology Centre watching the Belgian GP on Sunday and had to leave for the drive down on Saturday afternoon). This meant I missed the 'evening glow' (where tethered balloons use their burners in very low light - a truly spectacular sight) and many balloons flying. Anyway, I tried to get some nice close shots of the burners and canopies, in addition to the more 'standard' shots.

Quote from Storm_Cloud :Did you manage to liberate any unofficial souvenirs?

Unfortunately not, although there were some gearbox components sitting on a workbench in the race prep bays that could have been easily pocketed

Just back from having watched the race at the McLaren Technology Centre. My brother won 2 tickets as part of the Vodafone VIP competition.

The prize included a factory tour, including the 'Boulevard' (a foyer containing a number of important cars in McLaren's history - F1 cars from several decades, the Le Mans-winning F1 GTR from 1995, an F1 LM, a Can-Am car driven by Hulme and Bruce McLaren's Austin 7 and some other gems), the wind tunnel (complete with a 2008-spec 60% scale model on display), the 'mission control' area, from which engineers and strategists watch the race, the trophy cabinets and the race preparation bays.

In the race bays we got to take part in a 'pit stop challenge' where we had to change the wheels as quickly as possible. I wanted to try using the wheelgun, but it was incredibly difficult to get the timing right. After ending up with metal filings all over my gloves from a few badly timed moves I changed to be the person putting the new tyre on. That was a lot easier and we did OK, but our group on the tour sadly finished the competition in 3rd place...of 3 teams. Another treat in the race bays was that one of Perez's race cars from this season was sitting on high stands and being stripped. It's one thing to look at pictures and technical drawings but it's quite another to see the real thing up close and be able to smell the car too.

We were allowed to look wherever we wanted (within the scope of the tour of course, we didn't have an 'access all areas' pass), so I spent a lot of the time taking close-up looks of the cars, including time on the ground looking at the floors/diffusers of a few models.

The race itself was pretty decent too, but this will certainly be a day I remember for a long time because of the tour and the location.

Quote from Racer X NZ :A couple of quick points tho, point the first: there will always be disagreement between official and unofficial analysis of any event.

Agreed (with possible caveats that don't need to be explored here).

Quote from Racer X NZ :Point the second: there are still farms in Britain who's produce is banned from sale due to the effects of Chernobyl. That's not exactly in the immediate area is it.

Are there? I thought all bans were lifted now, but if there are any in place please provide a source as to the number. Unless there are a huge number in several different countries that were in the path of the Chernobyl 'cloud' I contend that my statement above (i.e. "In the aftermath of the Chernobyl incident there were various doomsday predictions that large areas across Europe would be unfit for humans and would produce highly radioactive crops/meat for generations. Those predictions have really failed to materialise.") is correct. We're only approximately a single generation after Chernobyl.

Quote from Racer X NZ :And yes, coal, oil, electric energy all have adverse effects, however these effects have nothing like the long term effects of a nuclear oops.

The 'normal' adverse effects of coal/gas power stations likely cause the premature death of at least tens of thousands of people worldwide each year. Here is a recent Guardian article which quotes a Greenpeace-commissioned study by Stuttgart University's Institute for energy economics. More than 20,000 premature deaths in a single year by (just) Europe's 300 largest coal power stations.
