You've used n-lite before haven't you?...iirc can't you point n-lite to the local i386 folder instead of using the OEM CD?
Anyway, the only way I can see of you getting it back shaun463 is with the use of a second PC running n-lite using your old i386 folder which you'll need to copy whilst booted up in Ubuntu...
...Or, if no OS choices are available at boot you could try rescue the boot loaders through Ubuntu:
1. Boot up the Ubuntu Live CD or just boot straight into Ubuntu(to fix windows loader skip this to step 2.):
Once you are at the desktop open up a terminal
sudo grub
This will get you a "grub>" prompt (i.e. the grub shell). At grub>. enter these commands
find /boot/grub/stage1
This will return a location. If you have more than one, select the installation that you want to provide the grub files.
Next, THIS IS IMPORTANT, whatever was returned for the find command use it in the next line (you are still at grub>. when you enter the next 3
commands)
root (hd?,?)
Again use the value from the find command i.e. if find returned (hd0,1) then you would enter root (hd0,1)
Next enter the command to install grub to the mbr
setup (hd0)
Finally exit the grub shell
quit
2.
To fix the Windows MBR:
sudo nano -w /boot/grub/menu.lst
Scroll down to the bottom of the file and add this:
# Windows title Windows root (hd0,?) savedefault makeactive chainloader +1
where ? is the number of your windows partition. So, if it is /dev/sda4 you would put a 3.
Restart and your windows boot option should be there.
Edit:
To find your XP key without being able to boot into windows will be trick, the only suggestion I have is to use the key reader attached through WINE in Ubuntu whilst it's placed on the XP NTFS partition - I have no idea if this will work but hey it's worth a try. XP-KeyReader.zip
Hey don't come back here complaining if it doesn't work
...and don't worry about the noise from the add-on fan as a heard of antelope migrating through your room would make less noise than the xbox itself
Really though, imo MS made a huge mistake not educating the general public about the excessive heat produced by the xbox, it is in actual fact very similar to a home PC than a console and needs to kept well ventilated unlike what the masses have done thinking it was like a PS2 or somethin' and sticking it in between their other electronic equipment in a closed cabinet< this would kill any xbox in no time.
Best thing to do is go into services and disable all the unwanted stuff like anti-virus and any startup apps that if you want set them to manual so you can use them if needed, for me on windows I just have basic networking services and Zonealarm starting up, iirc the feature in Vista that makes windows transparent etc. uses WAY too much memory too.
My new fav pastime is sitting under the flyover on Charge Island(just to the right of the water)and snipe chopper pilots and LMFAO at the noob cops jumping off the flyover to their death LOL! you can hear them scream.mad
Just laughing as usually these threads fall off the bottom of the page within minutes, it's nice to see everyone being so helpful is all
E;
I haven't messed around with W7 or Vista yet, can anyone tell me the similarities or differences betweeen them?, is the management console still there etc.?
Naa, I wouldn't worry what server you're on, gust get out there and race your best every time and the crashers and noobs will be in the mirror and you'll be alongside the pack learning as you go. People on S2 servers are aware of newcomers and tend go give and extra distance so unless you mess up real bad you should be just fine.
For me LFS runs at one quarter of the FPS run in Windows(4FPS)
WINE itself may not, but what about all of the lighting and shadow trickery that goes on that was built to run under ms? it's one quarter of ms in gaming. Crap(for me)
A wheel I think I've seen a hardly used G25 knocking around the house somewhere...*me can't wait to driven in LFS again, it's been ages*
Please don't turn this into the bloody retarded Linux-V- Vvindows noob bitch fest. I think what teedot meant to say was that the "Windows generation" misses out on a lot of the interesting features and inner workings of an OS and hardware usually restricted whilst in a Windows environment, but all those things are for geeks and the masses only "want stuff to work", go figure...
For LFS, Ubuntu(and just about any Linux OS)is terrible to run high-end games and software unless you own a high-end machine capable of running resource hungry emulators.
So Ubuntu and Linux sucks a great of ball's for gaming unless you want to start typing code like back 1887.
There must be some better way to deal with demo users and skins, forgive me if it has been discussed to death as I may have missed it(or not)because my memory ain't the best as of late.
So we are in a situation where demo users constantly keep posting their custom skins to the forum asking S2 holders to upload their content to the master server and LFSW. Most skins I've seen are dreadful and it's not hard to see why people get agitated with the constant flow of content from the unlicensed drivers which more often than not see's the demo user turned straight off LFS altogether for being flamed and told to buy a license which imo is not very fair as some of the skins presented for upload do actually have some effort put into them.
The dev's need to make clean and clear guidelines on the rules surrounding the uploading of skins by S2 holders from demo users by either outright banning uploading or hosting a separate temporary system. It is having a double whammy effect because that skin should not have been on the forum in the first place and if it is uploaded by an S2 holder it is content that is used through LFSW and is unpaid for.
I understand for many reasons why a P2P type system for the skins is undesirable, but would it not be feasible to have the demo users share skins amongst themselfs in P2P type fashion?
