Buy yourself ArmA2, find a good solid online community (6th Sense, Tactical Gamer, ShackTac if you really want some good mil-simming) and you're in mil-sim heaven.
I can understand if there being no HUD means access to critical menu points is cut-off, but why would you need a HUD? You don't have one in your eyesight do you? You cant just look infronot of you to see how many rounds you have left in the mag, how much stamina or health you have left?
Yes, I *know* it's a game, but if you're after realism (which tbh I would have though a game dev'd by an actual mil source would be!) hen a HUD is out of the question.
"HOW WILL I TELL I IZ GONNA RUN TO DAT COVERZ?" I hear you cry. Well, as ArmA 1&2 prove, For stamina, the further you sprint, the more you'll hear yourself breathe. When you come to a stop your aim will have decreased significantly and if you sprint too far you'll be stuck to a brief jog or walking. In the "Advanced Combat Environment" (refered to as ACE from now) mod for ArmA (soon to be converted to #2) You'll pass out from exhaustion.
Health: Visible blood, aiming ability is decreased. If a heavy shot to the legs is took, you'll have to crawl about. In ACE you'll bleed. You'll hear signs of pain (grunts, screams etc) and eventually pass out. If your heart stops, you need an epinephrine injection fast, some morphine & some good bandaging!
Ammo: In Arma 1&2s case, you either reload after prolonged firing to limit the chances of hearing a click instead of a bang, or you wait for that click & hastily reload. In ACE, a button is mapped so you can "check" the current mag, showing its "weight" (this mag looks/feels full/heavy/light)
Now my HUD rant is over, I did try AA3 and to be honest, I hated it. Its like the silly truck racing game that got absolutely slated but in FPS form.
Anyway, those who do enjoy it, have fun. For those who don't, get looking at other milsims !
EDIT: For those who say OMGOMG ARMA IS FULL OF TEH BUGZ. Patch 1.02 is out already. Its only just been released in the UK! Bohemia Interactive really do pump out patches!
Around a year ago I purchased a wonderful simulator I played a lot as demo called "Live for Speed" Bloody great I thought. New tracks, new cars and a G25 I'd brought as well. So I set out & joined numerous racing servers. Had a right blast!
But then I saw a place called "CityLifeCrew". Funny name for a server I thought so I took a look. I saw a money counter, I saw a mileage counter; I saw barriers and signs and GASP cars driving in different directions! So I continued to visit this place, and became marvelled at a DRIVING simulator that had some pretty damn decent physics.
Have you ever downloaded one of those 2D style driving instructor programs? Well I'd like to learn to drive (I'm 17 in November) but with those programs I didn't feel at all connected with the car. But with LFS I could use the shifter; I could learn the consequences of forgetting to clutch or hitting the wrong gear. I could get used to both the general styles of FW/RW/AWD (obviously this is going to be a lot different to a real car, but It can help!) I could also practise overtaking, junction manners & speed control (when you get to know the right people, many will help you out!)
So yes, I brought LFS with the intent of using it as a DRIVING simulator, I race, I cruise. LFS has a multitude of possibilities.
Another example was Crysis. I brought it with the intent to go PEW PEW PEW BANG BANG BANG throughout the SP/MP modes. Now it’s primarily used a scenery creator/screenshot generator. Everything has its possibilities.
So come on, cease the arguments & let’s understand each others perspectives. "Racers" like to fight for positions, go bumper to bumper into corners whilst "cruisers" like to imitate a small network using barriers & signs, relaxing whist not having to worry about positions etc. & "cruisers" just go WEEEEEEEEEEE round a corner in a fury of smoke and revs
I'll grab a coffee now, continue whatever it was you were doing
Is that the bloke whom talked to alex and *gonna type in white, dunno if its a potential spoiler but better safe than sorry!* --- said something along the lines of "I know you're not supposed to be here, neither am I" ??
I reckon he might have a slight connection to "Sam Tyler" from "Life On Mars". Only I don't know how he'd age so much in a few years
Still unsure of the connection with roses, now we have "Operation Rose" ...
So yeah, pretty gripping stuff, thought it was Sunday today, thank god I don't have another day to wait ! :')
Didn't actually look to bad if I'm honest ! We all know its going to be a slightly arcadish racer, don't go spouting sh*t about OMG ITS NOT RBR WTF !?!?!?
Water looks pretty good, especially the mud/water on the windscreem, should prove interesting !
Only downside is deffered lighting, looks good, but means a lack of AA !
