Quote from Shotglass :i too was hoping for this to be a review of the newer wheel
anyway nice review but theres one thing you should mention in future wheel reviews (especially with 900+deg wheels) which is ffb speed

They did mention it, though. Shaun said it was easier to correct quickly with the G25 because it's quicker and more responsive whereas the 911 is smoother.

Nice review guys! I love your hardware reviews. Video reviews are a lot more instructive than just written ones found on game sites (where the reviews are often done by journalists who don't care about racing and don't have anything to compare it to).

Keep up the good work!

I just had a go at Race 2 for the first time in centuries. Had to remind myself of how much fun it is with a full grid of fast, clean TBO racers! Now I remember why the XRT is one of my favourite cars.

There was only one XFG racer on, though.. I think he got a bit lonely, 'cause he left.

Quote from TAYLOR-MANIA :,
I'm still kinda doubtful though judging purely by how it looks. It doesn't look like it has a good amount of padding and it looks stiff. And the wheel stand bit looks flimsy. Hmm..

I understand your concerns. And to be honest I was kinda worried about the same thing as you. But I was very pleasantly surprised at the comfort. It seems they have done a very good job at getting high comfort at low weight.

The Obutto does indeed look very good as well. However it's big.. I expect the shipping costs to be significant on that one, but that remains to be seen.

Quote from Math1js :I still dont know if I should buy a G25 or a Fanatec 911, because I really like the pedals of G25, but I prefer Fanatec 911 wheel + H-shifter by the reviews, also that the fanatec wheel is bigger so it feels more realistic. Downside is that it is expensive and G25 isnt that expensive anymore... :<

If you can wait till March I'd go with the new Fanatec wheel + pedals. (GT3 RS) It's got quality pedals and a wheel that is even better than the 911 Turbo. Costs £289 though..

Quote from PioneerLv :Your room is small and you make it much smaller by putting in a racing seat, nice.

Well I've got a bigger room now though, so I don't have to collapse it between use. I just pull the pedals back, which is a 2 second job (literally).

Point is, the seat works great even in tiny rooms. I thought this might help somebody else.

I agree with jbirdaspec about the importance of pedals. Without decent pedals (and good pedal control!) it's nearly impossible to maintain the balance of the car, which is all important for smooth driving. Doesn't matter how good the wheel is if the pedals don't match!

As you say the Clubsport pedals are quite pricey. But the pedals + the GT3 RS wheel is surprisingly cheap as a package, knowing that the 911 GT3 RS wheel is essentially the same as the 911 Turbo. So if I were to buy a new wheel + pedals anytime soon I'd definitely consider that instead of a G25.

That said, the G25 pedals have enormous potential for modding! This can really improve them A LOT. There's plenty of info out there about how this can be done.

A little update: This seat is too damned comfortable! Yesterday I sat down to do some racing, and when I looked at my watch 5 hours had passed. I wasn't feeling tired at all. Scary stuff..

Quote from The Moose :On licensed servers as well?

Though its been far from perfect (as the new guys get used to the cars and racing) I cant say I've been hit once on the licensed servers in recent days.

That's probably just because you wave goodbye to the field in T1 and disappear in the distance.

Any further thoughts/experiences on the bandwidth vs collisions theory?

Quote from oqvist :I do have CST pedals and I wholeheartly recommend it.
The reason you pay 700 USD for the CSTs is not just for the load cell... It´s for the design, the build quality and the realstic feel (except for the clutch) .

You can do a decent job with a simple piece of rubber like the nixim brake mod so a load cell in itself is not all. You can get more precision with a load cell yes but the question is if you have that precise muscles in your brake leg you can really utilize it fully. I was born with stiff wooden legs lol.

The CST pedals will last a lifetime or two so if you are dead serious with your simracing and plan on doing this for 20 years or something it´s not that bad of an investment having the best pedals available and not having to shell out 100$ or something every two years or so.

I for one will hold off my judgement until the reviews are out. I'm not questioning the quality of the CST pedals, but it would be silly to spend that much ££ on them if the Fanatec pedals turn out to offer similar performance and durability.

I guess we'll know more in a couple of months.

Quote from BlakjeKaas :XJ220 looks old, but it still is one beast of a car to look at.

I wouldn't mind having that as a first car.

You probably would mind when the insurance bill arrived in the mail.

I really like the looks of this car. And the performance sounds good too, but it remains to be seen how it handles. I imagine it will take a lot of computer power to distribute and regulate the torque delivery on this one!

Indeed, it seems like a total no-brainer really. But I'd love to see a review of the wheel+pedals. And I've already got a G25.

Dammit, now you make me not want to go on Christmas vacation! At least I will have something to look forward to.

Looks absolutely terrific! Eric's pushing the standard ever higher on the 3D modelling, both interiors and exteriors. Nice work Scavier!

Quote from bbman :No shifter included... Although I don't believe that would make such a difference...

IMO the Fanatec shifter seems to be the weakest part of the package anyway.. I don't like how it's attached to the wheel. But I guess you could find a standalone shifter somewhere

Yeah I saw that too, but how on earth could that justify the price difference...? If anything I'd suppose you'd have to pay more for the alcantara grip thingy.. it seems like the wheels are identical on the inside, doesn't it?

I'm really curious about the pedals. If someone comes across a review, please post a link

How come the new GTR3 RS wheel is so cheap compared to the 911 Turbo S wheel?? Even with the same pedals it's 290 vs 460 euros...

Quote from kingfag :The problem with tire physics is that there isn't a good allround model to use. Basically every tire model is based on a solid static ground. Pacejka is very common for example, it performs well on a solid ground, but only if you feed it with a large number of correct tire parameters. One wrong number and the results are horrible. And that's just on static solid ground. Imagine the amount of parameters you'll need to model a tire on different surfaces. And then deformable surfaces...

True, the Pajecka formula is a gross oversimplification, but it's only dependent on three variables. The difficult bit is to "compress" the x variables present in real life into three input variables in the formula.

I can't remember where I saw this, but here is an interview with a physics guy explaining how physics are done in racing simulations. He focuses on tyre physics. It's a bit long, but the bit about the formula is around 16 minutes in.

This thread has been an interesting read, and I think many good points have been made. My money is on iRacing to get it done before any other sims. They've got the tire physics, car physics and static surfaces right already, and their develpment carries a lot more momentum than LFS (unfortunately). Dynamic surfaces should be a logical next step for iRacing.

Quote from Toddshooter :Did any of you catch the interveiw with the dev. of rFactor? He was talking about this very thing in that interveiw. Episode 32 or 31 of Inside Sim Racing. Sorry can't remember which.

Yep, that was a good interview. Looks like rFactor 2 is planning to do this too. The future looks bright!

Quote from itsphilthy :Very nice review

i will giving me one on x-mas...if the transport doesn`t take a month

Rhino Seat rockz

I hope Santa will bring you one.

For me, transport took about 3 weeks once the seat was sent. There were some initial problems which caused significant delay in my case, but Renato assured me that this was a one-off thing. So that's why I didn't mention shipping in the review, because I don't think that my experiences here are representative.

Time for a review of my Rinoseat. I've had it for two weeks now approximately, and I've been using it quite a lot.

Packaging and assembly
The seat was packed in a compact cardboard box. Each part was wrapped in plastic or cardboard for protection. The box also includes all you’ll need for assembly, including tools. A nice gesture!

Assembly was not very difficult, but I took my time since I wanted to get it right. The instructions were OK, but with some ambiguities. If I were to do it again now I could probably do it in less than 15 minutes.

Disassembly/storage
My room is very small (10m^2) so I have to partially disassemble it after use. This is very easy! After removing a couple of screws it will fold like this:

Unfortunately you’ll need to use tools to tilt the seatback. I think this could have been done with some handles or something instead. It’s not a big deal, though.

Build quality
The seat it covered with artificial leather. All the seams are high quality and seem very well done. The metal parts have a nice paint cover, and all the welds and joints appear solid.

Use
Now, on to the fun bit. Is it comfortable to use? The short answer is yes. The long answer is yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees.

I was totally amazed at the comfort!! It’s hard to put a finger on what exactly does it, but the whole feel of the seat is extremely good. The mix between soft cushions and still good support works very well indeed. Once you’ve adjusted the distance to the pedals correctly, the base of the seat will provide excellent support to your thighs. Also the way the seat is constructed, a lot of your body weight is held up by your legs, so there’s less weight on the seat itself. Since your body weight gets distributed over a large area it feels like you’re “floating on air”. (I stole that expression from some other review. ) Together, this means that even after long hours of racing I don’t get tired at all.

I’m using the Nixim mod, which requires me to use quite a lot of force when braking. I was slightly worried that this would cause the whole structure to flex and bend when I’m driving. However this is not the case – it feels very stable and solid.

Some words about adjustability: I was a little concerned about whether or not the seat would be big enough for me. I’m quite tall (2 meters) so I was wondering if the pedals could be shoved far enough away from the seat. (The pedals are connected to the seat base by a metal tube) And indeed they can! The distance from the seat and the pedals can be selected from about a million different positions, so this should work for everyone. Moreover the height/distance to the wheel, the angle of the pedal base and the seatback angle can all be adjusted as you please.

Now on to some of the negatives. Some people have expressed concern that the wheel isn’t supported all that well. And it’s true – the wheel support will flex some when you’re driving. This has both a negative and a positive side to it. Some people might think that it feels a little weird that it moves around like that, but on the other hand it means that the vibrations from the wheel get transferred into your seat. So when you hit a curb or something you’ll actually feel a thump in your legs. While subtle, I think this effect adds a little bit to the immersion, but the wobbliness of the wheel is a tradeoff that not everyone will be willing to make, I suppose.

One minor thing at the end – the legs are quite “pointy” and leave quite deep depressions in the linoleum on my floor. I’ve fixed this by placing some thin plastic discs underneath the legs, so it’s not really a problem, but anyway.. it’s the sort of thing that could easily be fixed by the manufacturer.

Overall
All in all, the Rinoseat is just what I was hoping it would be. The quality is great, and it can be adjusted to a lot of different positions to fit your fancy. It’s small and can be stored easily, but even though it’s small and looks kind of flimsy it’s very comfortable and stable. The only exception is the wheel support which flexes a little more than some might like. Personally I don’t think this is a problem, though, and all in all I’m very happy with the seat. It’s a little bit on the expensive side, though, but the value is great still.

I’m even thinking about making some extensions on it so I can use it for flight sims as well, which shouldn’t be too difficult considering the modular nature of the construction.

If you want to add your own review or thougths about the seat, or if you have any questions, please feel free to post here.

I believe AKM runs that combo on one of their servers.

Although why that combo is so incredibly popular I'll never understand.
