I agree that it will be off-putting with two monitors. You'd probably have to have *three* or just the one.

I'll second that - never ocurred to me, but its commonplace in real life.

I received my G25 set yesterday. I've upgraded from a lesser set of plastic force feedback steering wheel and two pedals. This is what I have to say about it and also how it has knocked back my driving to square one!

First impressions are good, though it will take some getting used to.

The wheel;
Superb quality, heavy, durable. Great motors on the force feedback. The wheel feels excellent in the hands though I've not been able to get away with the 900 degree rotation so I've set it somewhat lower. The paddles are excellent quality, made of metal, and make a satisfying 'click' when moved.

Also it is possible to feel slight 'steps' when turning the wheel slightly, probably due to the force feedback motors I'd guess.

The pedals;
Pretty good, solid, but could be better. I would like to see the brake pedal move MUCH less, almost not at all, and be applied by pressure to the pedal and not movement. If anyone has ever driven a Caterham car then you'll know what I'm on about. Also the clutch is very linear - you should be given the option to adjust the ratio of input depending on how far you push the pedal because in real cars the clutch isn't linear.

Oh - almost forgot - its a bit annoying when you come off the accelerator briefly to change gear and bang it back down. You get a reverberating vibration from the springs inside which last for about a second - it makes a noise and you can feel it through the pedal.

The shifter;
This is the most disappointing thing about the set. It just feels rubbish and plasticy. There's hardly any resistance going between gears and it feels sloppy in the guides. Not good whatsoever. I've actually unplugged it from the set.

I've not been able to get the Logitech Profiler to have much effect on the performance (such as the wheel rotation limits) but the Windows Game Controller applet works fine.

I also have been turned into a gibbering n00b with this set, I just can't coordinate everything because I've moved up from a simpler two-pedal layout with shifter on the wheel. I can't get my head round using everything at once!! Sounds funny, especially if you bear in mind that I've had a driving licence for 20 years and I hold a racing licence too.

The reason they don't use accelerometers for head tracking is that even with a small tilt of your head the inputs would give a false reading like you moved your head in a different way.

See the TrackIR website for info; http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/, you'll get the idea.

Very useful in flightsims like FS2004 or FSX. And I've got to using it in LFS all the time, it is very useful.

Thats pretty cool.

... but why not just use a TrackIR??
I've got an older TrackIR 3 and use it all the time in LFS.

It is inexcusable for nVidia to let this happen really. I think some of the onus should be with the LFS developers, it would help tremendously if 'advanced' options such as these were in the game setup screens.

Guys, I sorted my issues last night thanks to this thread;
http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=40550

Basically the new Beta drivers (174.53) don't have this issue, but I had to 'tweak' the installation to get it to work with my 8800GTS. By tweak I mean unpack the drivers, copy over a .INF file, then run the setup. It is all explained in the thread above.

Unfortunately the nVidia control panel is obviously meant for higher cards than mine so I kept getting an error message. However the new nHancer beta version (2.4.0.5) works.

Thats how I got my 8800GTS to display lovely smooth graphics again.
YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO MESS ABOUT WITH THIS, it really is bad.

Managed to get the .inf file into the folder and the drivers installed okay.
However, it seems that the nVidia Control panel now has more options and keeps bombing out with the error message "Parameter Incorrect"...

So I tried nHancer again. The mid-foreground DOES look better, the anti-alias has worked. And only slight shimmering in the distance now Smile

Ok, I've tested the nHancer 2.4.0 Beta 5 and it seems that it still makes sod-all difference.

I tried a load of different combinations and I still get the horrible shimmer-effect in the distance. It really is quite distracting, very annoying, and piss-poor for a card of this calibre.

Enlargement of a screenshot. This doesn't look too bad on its own but the image shimmers and causes distraction;

Quote from word. :Upgrade to 171.xx or 174.xx
Nvidia don't put all their driver releases on their official site
Lots of drivers are avaliable here http://downloads.guru3d.com/
I'm using 174.20 and the AA bug is fixed.

The 174.53 drivers are out now from Guru3D but it says they're not compatible with my hardware (8800GTS).

So next I'm trying a new version of nHancer which claims to get round the bug.

Which version please? I'm trying to decide on which one to use.

It seems that the latest Beta drivers are 169.44 (6th March 2008) and not a 171.x series. Will try 169.44.

Guys, theres a well-publicised bug in the latest driver for these cards. It means that any settings in nHancer or the nVidia Control panel DO NOT WORK.

I think the only option is to either wait for an updated driver or roll back to a previous version. Sucks really for a £200 card, but there you go.

Quote from Andy Jeb :Have just changed computers and carn't find the right setup

Why do you need a setup? I recently reinstalled WinXP as part of a trouble-shooting exercise and I just use the Logitech WinXP drivers - no need to use the profiler at all. You can set everything up in the Game Controller section of the Control Panel.

Quote from mcgas001 :Could be firewall/router port issues. That happened to me when i tried to make a server and the ports wernt fully open.

Yeh I was going to suggest that too. ESPECIALLY if you have Norton or similar!!! Just for a 5 min test, take down all your firewalls (Windows and the one in your Router) and try it. Post back your result.
Is there a fix out yet for the nVidia cards? [old thread - before patch Z]

All you 8800GTS users will be aware that LFS looks very very poor indeed on these cards due to some kind of bug that doesn't allow you to change settings like anti-alias, anisotropic etc...

Anyone know of a fix yet?

Thanks.

Thanks. I usually do a reboot before going online so there are minimal processes running. I'll look into it more, I suspect my ISP might be the cause but with a non-LLU exchange and no cable I'm restricted in what I can use.
Server lookup is slow and intermittent

Hi all. I've been having dismal issues with bad graphics; http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=30474&page=9 and my conneciton dropping all the time (the two are unrelated). But I couldn't even get into LFS today. I've uploaded two videos to Photobucket,

This shows the update speed when refreshing the servers;

This shows how I just keep getting dumped.

Any ideas?
