I don't mean to sound disrespectful, and I absolutely remember what it's like not to have a lot of cash, but jeez: couldn't one of you guys in Ireland give Dougie 12 pounds to mow your lawn or something? Then his problems would be solved.
Yes, clearly this guy is one of the serious racers.
Viva Banger Racing, it's nice to see a place where the usual rules of conduct are reversed. Please do all you can to attract some of the guys who bring a banger-racing mentality to a normal race server, OK?
Care to elaborate Tukko? This is flat wrong as far as I know: a locked wheel has less friction against the road than a rotating wheel and so slows you down less.
Kurt, this makes sense, but I was wondering if you could provide some more info about how you achieved this.
I think braking in LFS is a real weakness of mine: my brake pedal is kind of crappy and I find it very difficult to modulate it at partial braking levels, so I generally just set up the braking force/balance of the car so that maximum braking will be just short of locking up the wheels. That way I can just jump on the brakes as hard as possible at my desired braking marker and do OK, but I am sure this clumsy procedure is losing me some time.
When you've achieved this very late, very aggressive braking, what's the action of your left (or right, I don't know) foot like? Do you brake hard and then modulate, or what? Do you tend to put up with a bit of lockup knowing that it's only a hotlap so who cares if the tyres get flat-spotted? Does a sensitive brake pedal allow you to lower the braking force and trail-brake nicely into the corner?
Forgive all the questions, but: you already mentioned that downshifting is involved as well, so do you downshift simultaneously with the braking action or beforehand? What do you tend to do with the coast lock settings on your diff to avoid the car coming around on you when you downshift aggressively like this?
Gunn, just to clarify: if this is the problem, careful inspection of the virtual pedals display would show what was going on, right?
I only ask because I like your story about losing races due to your pedals malfunctioning -- I tell myself this all the time, but sadly it doesn't seem to be true.
Strange problem, Jetta. I was sure you were going to say that the virtual pedals display showed that you weren't getting to maximum throttle, but it sounds like the pedal inputs are coming through just fine.
What speed do you get to at the end of the back straight at Blackwood in the FOX, for example? Depending on downforce this should be about 142mph, I think.
Chris, I don't know you from Adam, but I have to say that this kind of crack goes very well with a picture of Graham Hill. Whenever reading your posts I now get an image of Graham Hill sitting back with a cigar and a brandy and typing nasty comments.
I wouldn't mind seeing a chicane-free Blackwood, but only if it was introduced as one variant among many (several of the ones sketched above look nice). As others have said, BL with no chicane would look historic and would suit certain monster cars like LMPs. I admit it would be boring as hell to drive in anything under 500hp though.
Not a Sim-Dad but curious about your project, Gunn. Will you be publishing the report more widely than just here? Are you a professional psychologist or sociologist? I mean to say, is this real work for you, or are you just doing it out of interest?
