Quote from logitekg25 :opinions on a 1999 bmw 528i?

power, reliability, handling, etc.

also can you turn off the tc?

Too much electronics for me imo, I'd look into an e34 if I were you. Also hit or miss when it comes to reliability. Coming from someone who works on mostly bmw.

Quote from e2mustang :why? mine is 20 years old,the red one is 94,the orange is 95. they r boxy from the 90's.oldschool

20 years old? My car is 20 years old and it's an e30. e36 m3 was brought to the states in 95.

Quote from e2mustang :I had an "oldschool" car week, such as E34's and E36's.which i liked very much coz i prefer them over POS new cars. And here are the brothers, the orange is the turboed one. i can put up crap vids i took with phone if requested.

ps. actually it is an ontopic post coz my car is in it

lol I wouldn't define an e36 as "oldschool"

Quote from e2mustang :the e30 is a tank dont worry, your oil pan will break the pothole

Quote from Klutch :In most cars i've come across, the crossmember tends to sit slightly lower than the sump, you're more likely to hit that. And your exhaust...and your chassis rails...

My brothers car is 25mm off the ground at its lowest point and its never hit the sump, no scratch marks what so ever.

Its hit pretty much everything else under the car, though.

Actually no, e30's have the worst designed sumps ever IMO, they sit far lower than the subframe. And when you put in a 24v motor from an e36 or so on they tend to sit even lower. I have about 6 inches clearance, and I'm not even "low". If you look straight under, you can see that my sump sits lower than the front lip

Quote from Shotglass :why would anyone want their friends to believe they drive something as shameful as a bmw? or a golf for that matter

So you rather have your friends think you have a small penis for buying a 2 seater, mid engine sports car? Aren't you a bit young to be going through a mid life crisis
Quote from Shotglass :yes makes total sense i drive an mr2 therefore i must be gay
thanks for the revelation

as for jap cars... im not aware of any other country that has made anything anywhere near as interesting (and affordable) as eg an rx7 fd or an s2000 in recent years

Every car you listed(not counting the civic) has a pretty decent amount of major flaws.

Thanks! it does need a resonator though, way too loud for a DD and it gets a bit raspy at higher revs.

Quote from e2mustang :lol. have u ever driven a benz? coz i do all day long along with beemers.i just have 2 benzes in the shop for trans change. one 722.9 and an old one. Bmw only has problems with the 99-00 E46 transes. but u can go to bmw and they will fix it for free. only that 2 year.

Yes I have driven a Benz, I actually owned SEVERAL. The best automatics to that I know of. I also work at a shop so I speak with experience. E46 isn't the only one with tranny issues, e30's are known to blow trannies without trouble. I rarely see a benz blow a tranny when properly maintained.

Quote from e2mustang :never ever buy a benz.that comes from a benz-bmw mechanic--> me(well only if its an sls amg which i worked on yesterday than u can buy benz ).and ur wrong about the maintenance part. so u know which one to get !
+ almost every benz auto trans is junk, from stop it does this: okay hes flooring the gas pedal.. oh he really wants to take off... should i take off? mmm.. i dunno... oh well okay lets start going.10 seconds later it starts going

seriously? Mercedes makes the best automatics ever, their manual gearboxes are rubbish, spongey and rubbery feeling at best. A BMW automatic is horrible, there's a reason why they explode.

Quote from P5YcHoM4N :As I recall, only Mercedes-Benz and BMW are currently releasing cars in the states in diesel guise, but they are only available in top spec, so quite pricey. Companies have tried in the past, but the US/Canada just will not embrace diesel, some think it is part down to how diesel pumps are normally the other side of the petrol station and you're left to fill up with trucks which makes you feel alienated.

Personally I just think it is the dragging of the heels we get over here with some people, just there are more people who drag their heels so the diesel market isn't profitable. Plus due to US/Canada Emission laws, it is fine to have a petrol that only gets 1MPG, but a diesel that gets 60MPG is somehow going to kill everyone.

I agree, I see nothing wrong with diesels, they have plenty of power for the US, especially for the amount of traffic around here. The low end is perfect for New York. We hate on Diesels but we drive hybrids that cost an arm and a leg and barely get 40mpg. One thing these manufacturers aren't telling us is how much fuel is used to make the hybrid batteries and such."The amount of energy that is needed to produce the battery for a Prius is equivalent to driving a Hummer H2 for 300,000 miles!"

Quote from e2mustang :lol on that. are u planning adding more stuff? a chip would be a must and at Turner motorsport they are 25 $ off + u get a 25 $ gift card for gas(exxon/mobil)

Already have a TRM chip. Later down the road, a c38 centrifugal supercharger is in the works

Quote from e2mustang :ye your not going anywhere with a 325e lol. u wouldnt downgrade with a 2.7 from a shitty 4 cyl anyway.my point was from beginning just to put an m3 engine if u swap thats all.u would get more out of it than a reg m50. i see u did headers, what else is in it?

It's basically an m50b28 now, full m52b28 internals. And an M42b18 is far from shitty Awesome 4 cylinder motor.

Quote from e2mustang :well u wouldnt find a euro engine here anyway.i still think all that work.. could of just bought an e30 with a 2.7l 6cyl for like 2 grand

a 2.7l? seriously, your telling me to downgrade to a motor that was designed in the 70's, SOHC, a terribly flowing head, low compression ratio that only makes 129hp and revs to 4500rpm? I had an 86 325e before and it was a complete turd, especially with an automatic. BTW, this isn't a standard m50, it's a 2.8l m50. 11:1 CR. It's going to be making about 200whp, pretty close to what a stock US s5x makes. And it's rather easy nowadays to find a euro s50, just with a hefty price tag.

Quote from e2mustang :you think its gonna be much faster than the old 6 cyl? i mean a no vanos 2.5 engine has no power at all,why not an m3 engine?

Because this was originally a 4 cylinder car? I don't need an s5x. especially a us one. just a glorified m5x
