Didn't Paul Stoddart (Minardi's boss) say live at the 2005 USGP interview that the race was "****ing crazy" and "bullshit"?

Quote from ayrton senna 87 :lol u idiots, im just saying that its faster to be beyond the limit.
prost was slower than senna

Better to be safely pushing at 98-99%, than trying 101% and eventually tailfish, go wide, smoke the tires and lose concentration and rhythm due to the eventual inconsistency. Nobody is Senna or Schumacher around here, son.

Prost was a better car nurser than Ayrton. And maybe a bit slower... yet he won 4 WDCs and lots of races at McLaren, Ferrari and Williams with Honda, Porsche, Ferrari and Renault engines, while Ayrton only did it at Lotus and McLaren with nothing but Honda and Ford (if those can even count) engines. All in all, Prost was a much more successful F1 driver than Senna. Something to think about, eh?

I'd love to know how Button does not push the limits of his car, yet he canned a known-for-being-aggressive Rubens Barrichello at this years' championship, and even worse, at his home GP. Where do you get the telemetry info? I'd love to take a look at that.

I wrote on another forum. Enjoy :

Just... DAMN! This will be pure rambling, I'll just put some thoughts here.

Sao Paulo was the usual mess. Hotels clogged, 3 hours rides from the hotel to the circuit, traffic from Hell, but whatever; It was all worth it.

For Saturday and Sunday I sat on the E sector, right in front of the Senna S. I'll just mention that at the end I was yelling for Michael. I was screaming my lungs out. Just as everyone on my grandstand did... did I mention it was the Renault grandstand? (I don't like Schumacher as most of you know...)

I know you've all read this, but Schumacher's drive was absolutely stunning, masterful. I don't even know what words describe it.

Plus, Massa's victory was something beautiful to witness... People were crying all over the place.

Heidfeld's crash was awful to watch though. On TV didn't look so bad maybe, but having the car crash a few feet from you isn't cool no matter what.

And Sato! Everyone was cheering him. I couldn't believe he was 10th, and that he ended up there. Great, great race. He went side by side with a Red Bull or a Toro Rosso at the Senna S... that was breathtaking to watch!

And the icing on the cake? I met Vitantonio Liuzzi at the airport and got a picture with him. I'll post it as soon as I get it.

I wish I could write something more elaborate right now, but I just came back from the airport, I'm exhausted, and I just found out that my cellphone and my camera with over 30 minutes and 150 pictures of the race got stolen at Sao Paulo, so I'm a bit confused right now... but honestly, it doesn't matter.

Good night everyone.

---

I'm still shocked, guys. I think I witnessed one of the best races in Formula 1 history, on the best spot of the track you could be; RIGHT IN FRONT OF F@CKING TURN 1 AND THE SENNA S! It's the most intense thing I've ever lived, period.

Like I saw on a movie... "I'm 21 years old, but that day was the moment of my conception, right there".

Absolutely.

Quote from ayrton senna 87 :this video is wrong, the throttle can be applied and then taken off (but not fully)

there is a thing called 'beyond smoothness' which means pushing the car beyond the limit and coming back, ayrton senna did it using the throttle, and schumi does it using the steering wheel.

being smooth is a kind of 'cheat' to becoming pretty fast with no feel for what the car is doing, the last few tenths or hundreths are down to feel and 'beyond smoothness'

its very hard to understand! but true.

I'm a huge Ayrton Senna fan too (In fact, I went to the 2006 Brazilian GP and paid my respects to the man at the Morumbi graveyard after the race) but suggesting that Jackie is wrong because he didn't explain the Senna approach to the throttle is just nuts. The guy is teaching a rookie for Christ's sake. Gotta learn to crawl before you learn to walk, don't you?

Different techniques for different people. Alain Prost was smoother than Ayrton, and sure didn't hurt him, right?

...Or maybe you know a thing or two more than the 3 times WDC Jackie Stewart.

cdub:

I'm using a cheap FF wheel. The pedals are have a very short ride, so I have to be very very careful with the input. I guess I have to keep working on improving... I'm seriously lacking some patience I think.

Misko:

Thanks for the replay file! I'm downloading it as I write this. It might not have the pedal input, but I'll get the idea anyway. I don't need the exact braking distances, I just need to sort out my approach. Maybe I'm just being too agressive.

Thanks for the tips, both of you.
WANTED: Replay of XRT @ Blackwood with a 'smooth' long race driving technique.

I'm helpless when it comes to the RWD cars in the demo.

The XR GT is pretty tame and balanced even if I just nail the throttle out of every corner. The XRT however, is getting on my nerves.

I just can't get it to handle smoothly. Whether is locking the front wheels, fishtailing out of every corner or making a mess out of hitting the apexes, I flat out suck with it. And I swear I try to teach myself: Smooth on the gas out of that damn corner, easy on the brakes, etc... I fail anyway. I have some - alledged - long race setups that should last a lot, but even on practice I'll smoke them on no time.

So... does anyone have a replay of a proper racing lap on the XRT at Blackwood? I don't mean a WR hotlap, I mean the sort of lap somebody would do on a long race... the sort of lap that wouldn't shred your tyres if you did it 3 times, but that it's fast anyway. It would help me to sort out my approach, and solve a few questions.

Please? Thanks in advance.

Quote from jtr99 :I'm not disagreeing with you, but I think it's important to note that they got killed fairly often in those cars. So I think XCNuse is right to say that a wingless FO8 would be dangerous.

It's not like you'll get killed if you go off the track on a FO8 on LFS.

Quote from spookthehamster :I've taken to putting the AI in faster cars than me and starting at the back of the field. It says something about the AI quality that I can beat a BF1 in the FO8 around any track.

It's nice to race against the AI packing your own car with fuel and passengers. You have to use the same huge braking distances than them... it sorts out the field for a while.

BTW, nice deep Montoya quote.

Anyway, wish I could try that qualy system, sounds interesting! How do you program that change to the qualifying mode? LFSLapper?

Quote from tristancliffe :Faster, I raced with you the other day. I'm nowhere near the fastest drivers, but quite frankly I blew you away. You REALLY need several WEEKS more practice before you'll even qualify as average.

Don't try too much too soon. Choose slower, easier cars, and concentrate on TECHNIQUE not SPEED. Make sure you brake earlier rather than later, follow the correct lines, and don't try to turn and brake (to begin with), or accelerate too fast. When you get the techniques right speed comes automatically. You CANNOT go fast without technique.

If in doubt watch people - either as spectators or downloading hotlaps from www.lfsworld.net.

Under no circumstances must you EVER hit anyone. Especially on purpose, but avoid accidents, even if it means taking yourself out of the race to avoid others.

Don't bother, he's too... nevermind.

Where can I find information on how the differentials work and affect the car's behavior? I'm having a bit too much lift oversteer with the XRT. If anyone feels like just writing the differences, pros and cons here, I'll give you a cookie !

Please avoid pointing me to a hardcore car site; I'd prefer a more LFSish explanation.

Thanks.

Quote from deggis :I'd take revised tracks instead of completely new tracks. Fern Bay needs to be graphically updated and especially Aston needs some remaking with with some corners. There are just too many completely stupid and unrealistic corners in LFS tracks in general.

What Aston corners do you say are unrealistic?

Quote from Jimmy_Lemon :mazda rx8 revs to 17000 rpm, its only 1.3 engine, but its tuned alot to use all the power

Wrong. The redline is around 10k RPM actually. And it's a 1.300cc wankel engine, so it's not really helpful to compare it to what we have in LFS.

EDIT: Just checked a video of a stock RX8 racing at Laguna Seca... the redline is at 9.000 RPM in fact.

Tristan: I'm no car expert, but it's pretty torqueless not only because it's understressed, but also because of the lack of displacement I'd say, no? You could tweak the engine a lot and it would still fall short of torque compared to other cars on it's HP range, I reckon.

This is not good...

The BBC News thingy reported that Hammond has a 'significant brain damage' and that they aren't sure if he's gonna live or die.

Read it yourselves:

Hola viejo!

Creo que eres EL unico chileno que he visto en estos foros aparte de mi.

Compré un manubrio hace como una semana... asi que supongo que es hora de soltar pa la licencia S2.

Quote from Ant :He is meant to be 5'7 ( 1.7m) according to this http://www.imdb.com/name/nm1414369/ . Probably about 5.3 now though

Not exactly a tasteful comment.

Anyway, I don't think he's 5"7. Otherwise, everyone would have to be a giant on the UK... he looks so short on the set.

Quote from nutty boy :Hope Hammond gets well soon. Twice in 2 months now that i've woken up and my mum has told me something i didn't like. First it was Steve Irwin, now it's this. I really hope he's OK. That also means they probarbly replace Hammond for crap Tiff Needell at MPH now.
It was JC, Hamster and Captain Slow at MPH. I was excited about seeing all of them but now they'll replace him.

I've actually stood next to Hamster and got his autograph at a trucking event. That memory keeps coming back right now.

Hopefully he gets better. I think he'll pull through.

How tall is he, really? 5'6 or shorter?

Quote from JohnUK89 :Considering I can run BF2 on a GeForce 6200 (very much a budget card) at medium detail a Radeon x1300 shouldn't have any problems with it at all.

Back onto topic: I had LFS running on 192MB RAM at one point, was slow as hell though. I reckon that was more to do with the CPU than anything else though, was on an Athlon 1300MHz

Good to know.

I used to run LFS with 256 MB Ram... On a 800 Mhz Pentium III.

It was painful, I tell you!

Quote from lalathegreat :Your PC is kinda out dated though, i would not even attempt to run BF2 with those specs. mainly the (9250). that card is from two generations ago and is the low end model.

Yeah, I thought the same. Getting slightly off-topic, how would BF2 run on my system?:

AMD Athlon 64 3000 @ 2.4 Ghz
1 GB Ram, Dual Channel
ATI Radeon x1300 (I know... I just bought it for LFS, it was cheap )
Onboard sound, etc.

Would it be playable? I want that game.
