Agree, agree and agree. I just upgraded my old PC to a Socket 939 setup (AMD 64 3000+, 1 GB RAM, DFI NF4 motherboard) and it's the most cost-effective solution nowadays by FAR! And since, like me, you aren't a hardcore gamer, I fully recommend you to do the same and go for a Socket 939 computer. Yeah ,it will won't be top notch soon, but it will be a strong performer for a long time anyway. And I bet that buck for buck, it will be better than a Conroe or whatever new processor comes out.
You say you turned AA to 8x? No wonder your performance went so low, that's a crazy figure... I didn't even know you could go that high.
Try this setting: 1024x768 at 32 bits, AA 4x and AF 8x. Or if you can, 1280x1024x32 bits, AA 2x and AF 8x. Great visual quality, at what should be a good framerate. Good luck!
I used to play on a Pentium 3, and suffer with ugly ass framerate and N64 like graphics. Not anymore!
I upgraded my computer! Behold! (not really )
Athlon 64 3000+ @ 1800 Mhz (had it up to 2500 Mhz but stock it does just fine. )
DFI NF4 motherboard.
2 x 512 MB RAM - Buffalo Value, PC3200, dual channel.
Radeon X1300 256 PCI-e graphics card.
Same old 40 GB IDE drive. Again, don't need more.
Great performance, good enough for me.
Still no wheel though... waiting for that kickass Logitech wheel to come out!
Ok, I'm not the fastest man in the world precisely. But I came across a handy tool that made me improve my times by almost 2 seconds a lap. Wanna know what it is?
It's an extract from a recent Top Gear episode. On the video, Sir Jackie Stewart (Three times Formula 1 champion) teaches James May (the slowest driver on the show) some important principles about competitive driving, while testing a TVR on a track. It's a master driving lesson I'd give ANYTHING to have for myself. At the end of the day, James May's time around the track got a massive chop. So did my times around Blackwood on the XFG... Stewart gives some great examples about smooth driving and proper corner exit.
Take a good look at the video, it helped me a LOT! And I'm pretty sure it will help you improve too.
My T1 usually is very agressive, but taking care of my car and others'. Most guys usually leave the inside of T1 unused, so I brake aiming to the apex, usually late braking rather than early, and suddenly I'm alone, jumping from 7th to 3rd, while the pack is fighting to stay on the track by the outside.
This seems to be what most 'idiots' tend to do, but I rarely get involved in a crash... like some F1 driver I can't remember said, you just don't win races at the first corner.
It kind of makes a difference, but when your car's 2 seconds a lap faster than everyone else you can stop for lunch while doing the pitspot and being still ahead.
Toyota could pull a surprise next year, given that their development keeps consistant. Remember that next year everyone will be using Bridgestone tyres, and Toyota already made the switch this year. It could be a huge advantage to them.
I'm not too keen on Jarno Trulli or Ralf Schumacher, anyway. Trulli seems solid but unimpressive, and Ralf is getting old.
What's with Toyota and their driver choices? It's mostly like an assylum for old drivers (Da Matta and Zonta don't count) to end their careers: Mika Salo, Olivier Panis, Allan McNish... and it's seems to be going that way for Ralf Schumacher. Trulli does have a few years on him.
They can't even deal with McLaren, let alone Ferrari or Renault. There's two Michelin teams ahead of them at the moment, besides their pace has been less than impressive as of late, they couldn't even fight for a podium at Barcelona.
They have way too much work to do if they want to fight for a win.
They should say mission accomplished if they can beat both McLarens.
It is said that some Indy drivers have survived +100Gs in some crashes, uninjured... I wonder how much of a role safety plays there, and how much luck does for you.
About Schumacher... yeah, I don't think he's the greatest either. Let's just have a look against the drivers he's had to fight:
·Mika Hakkinen, clearly the best of the rest so far.
·Jacques Villeneuve, Damon Hill. Nothing to write home about, unless they had a dominant car.
·Fernando Alonso... seems to be pretty good. He won't be a one-off, that's for sure.
·Raikkonen, Montoya, Coulthard, Berger, Alesi (well, against the hype of Alesi... lol illepall), and a bunch of one-offs who won some races but not WDC, or not yet at least.
Now let's check the late 80s, early 90s. Who did you have to race against if you were, say, Ayrton Senna?
·Alain Prost... Oh dear.
·Nigel Mansell. Only won the WDC with a dominant car, but the man had balls the size of NYC.
·Nelson Piquet. Three times WDC, very agressive driving and a very controversial guy.
·Ricardo Patrese, and a bunch of others who usually snatched some points, wins and whatnot here and there.
Senna was never as spoiled on his team as Schumacher has been in Ferrari, either.

Actually, thinking twice about it... Schumi would have lost big time if the safety car had come out, because in that exact moment (when Monty spun out) Schumacher was very very light on fuel and Alonso had just come out from pits, heavy tank and cold tyres, Schumacher HAD to go as fast as possible in order to overtake Fisichella at the pits. So... even worse!
If you mean the Piquet/Salazar incident, I think it was Salazar's. He was being blue flagged all over the place, and should have left Nelson overtake him at the chicane. Piquet's engine was about to blow up anyway, so no harm done.
