The problem lies in the fact that users will make absolutely sure the poster knows he looks stupid, and as a result the poster will try to make the critic look stupid, which results in a flamewar... Which doesn't look nice and keeps people from staying on-topic.
You need moderators to ban an account, btw. The ignore list is annoying when everybody starts to use it and everyone has a few users in it for arbitrary reasons. Threads will look really weird with questions answered 3 times, and people starting to get upset from getting complaints that they made a double post, while in reality they were the first to answer (as far as they can see).
Uhmmm... No... It's Windows XP Home...
From Microsoft:
(also, try joining a PC with XP Home to a domain... There's more missing than just IIS and Multi processor support (I thought XP Home supported 2 procs, XP Pro up to 16, but I'm not sure))
The only thing I don't like about this one (or any other notebook, really) is the HDD... There should be a full 3.5" HDD bay for regular 500GB 10k discs, not those lame 2.5" flat 80GB HDDs at 5400rpm. Other than that... Nice buy!
You (and anybody buying a complete desktop) have the right to deny the Windows XP pre-install... Not only does OEM mean non-transferrable, but it also means no Microsoft Support. The downside is that you'll have to pay full price for a full license (and XP Pro is not cheap), the upside is that you don't have to pay for an inferior product if you don't want to.
On a side-note... Apparently Vista OEM licenses can be either installed on 2 systems (but not simultaneously), or the Vista complete license can no longer be installed on more than 2 systems. Also, you are not allowed to install any Vista version on a virtualisation system (like VMware) except for 3 expensive versions (business license, premium license, and Volume license). (edit: this is from a press release from MS to clarify the new licensing scheme... Did not clear things up from what I've read)
On-topic:
So what kind of notebook did you get, Victor? Wanna know if we're going to have to return the support you've given us over the years anytime soon
And that's exactly why editing a post might prove smarter than just deleting... And a feedback forum might have saved that thread from being closed.
Anyway... I support the mods in any (actually most) of their decisions.
You're all doing a fine job, and keep it up. I suppose that needs to be said every now and then, as well.
Most of you know how I feel about moderation (for those that don't, moderation on these boards isn't tight enough imo)...
One of the things I would like to see here is a feedback forum where users can complain to mods (if they for some reason don't feel like using PM). This way all the off-topic complaints in threads can simply be edited/deleted with a reference to the feedback forum. A lot less threads would need to be closed.
Also, editing instead of deleting a post might prove useful if you remove an offensive or off-topic post. It might just receive a bit more understanding from the users involved, and generally results in less complaints.
Mind you, moderating is not censorship. It's just the forum police force.
Anyway, all this is my opinion, what y'all want to do with it is up to you.
There's just one thing I need to get out in the open (and this is in no way an accusation towards anybody in the LFS dev team)...
If Eric's got his own house, and it needed work... Then where the heck is the corresponding forum thread?
I think most people would just like to read some kind of update, even if it's just to say there's no update.
Enjoy the new house, Eric. Enjoy Leo, Scawen... Have fun with LFS Alpha, community. I'll patiently wait for the next update, and continue enjoying what we have so far.
Actually it's just God Rest ye merry gentlemen and the Carol of the Bells on guitar and drums... But it absolutely rocks... Only song in history to ever give me goosebumps all over. Every year in December my musical playlist reduces to all TSO CDs. I'm not into christmas, but this music simply rocks...
Keeping it a bit on-topic of LFS my favorite video would have to be Robbie Williams - Supreme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bvs7DYdWSsc)
Technically perfect, and a very cool concept.
BTW, my favorite song ever doesn't have a video: Popcorn by Gershon Kingsley.
Apparently, even if it's just for you, we need a feedback forum...
You wouldn't have to go to PM, and this thread would remain on-topic.
That was the reason posts were deleted in the first place.
btw, a reason WAS given... So it was a mistake. Sorry for the loss of your posts, but life goes on. Leave it at that.
(I'd be a much stricter mod than all the mods on here combined, so just be glad I'm not one )
It doesn't matter who made the mistake... My point was that they'll always get complaints. I for one am glad something is happening that could be considered moderation on the boards (although it should be done even more and stricter imho). We needed it after the last 'crisis'.
Ultimately, the mods can do whatever they want. And yes, they make mistakes, and Al has 'kind of' admitted he could've left the posts as is (at least Kid's ones)... If Kid has a problem with his posts being gone forever, I suggested he'd take it up in PM, and not here, as this whole discussion is off-topic.
And how long do you think it would take to delete the current discussion?
If you have complaints, don't do it on the thread, but go to PM (a feedback forum is what we apparently need but don't have as yet).
Mods will always get complaints, whatever they do...
There was a time we didn't see mods for a while, and there were complaints nothing was being done. Now that that's changed, they get complaints too much is deleted.
The mods run this show for the most part. If you don't like what they did, go to the feedback section of the forum (which isn't here, so PM the mod)...
Don't waste valuable forum space with completely off-topic complaints.
Actually, the name on the window looks a bit strange... Too tight to be over the B-pillar, and too horizontal.
You can't really make out the helmet in the Alfa, so I missed that one
Yeah, I did a search over a year ago, after finding out he was the 'foreign' entry in the dutch Alfa challenge... Just thought it was cool to race someone I'd seen on track in real life.
Right... Who's the sucker we're going to embarrass now?
I can understand why someone would want 3 pedals though... It's one for brake, one for throttle, and one to pump up the airbag in a crash.
Yeah mate... You need to wait a tiny bit longer until the Logitech G25 is available to you. It's da proverbial bomb (for the hardcore budget priced wheels).
lol... Why? Slowly becoming the most famous non-famous racer in the world.
(btw, that first pic looks photoshopped, and the helmet seems to be different, is it you?)
I've seen some of the alfa challenge races. Wasn't cheering for you though, sorry
And physics limitations in the engine (as well as real life) dictate that a car cannot accelerate in any direction at 1.5m/0.01s/0.01s. So these weird calculations can be avoided (quite easily by taking more than 1 last checkpoint into account and interpolating the energy at which the actual collision took place).
Mind you, crashes because of lag will still happen (where cars simply get into eachother because of the collision detection), but the result of that can still be a realistic crash or slide. LFS is doing ok, just needs the final wrinkles ironed out of the collision detection.
No, it's not... playing an MP3 is always the same, but actually creating music (using Cubase SX and a gazillion softsynths (VSTi)), is something very similar to what Scawen is doing I'd imagine. The sequencer (Cubase, and LFS) only tells the soundgenerator (synth) what notes should be played (pitch and instrument), and the soundgenerator then creates the sound on-the-fly by creating a waveform that is returned to the sequencer. The sequencer then mixes all available waveforms and outputs that into a buffer.
Maybe Vista uses a sort of ASIO driver to dump the buffers in (which causes these problems, normal drivers just stop playing).
Thanks to big corporations that have enough money to buy all the licenses they want, stick in all the cool eyecandy, and the ability to release new versions of the same software in a new package about twice a year, yes...
Those corporations care not about racing but about making money. Truth is, the learning curve for RL physics and driving at the limit is too high to make it profitable. People simply will not learn to drive it to the game's potential before a new version is forced on you. Which means they can't release newer version as fast as they are doing now, which means they make less money. Not to mention the fact that the market for RL physics isn't that big... There are not too many people interested in hardcore simulators, yet millions of people enjoy jumping into a car and throw it through neon-lit streets.
The only ones making simulators we enjoy are the small 'indie' companies like Scavier (or whatever we'll call them now), and the occasional 'former big shot studio turned indie' (like iRacing). Generally, those companies don't have the money (and definitely don't make the profit) to acquire expensive licenses.
One way to get around the licensing issue is by allowing modding, but LFS at its current stage is not ready for that by a long shot.
Yeah, I didn't like the idea of totally fixed setups, so I made it fixed with a twist...
My idea would add a new dimension to league races, I think. Although practice and qualifying sessions would need to be 30 minutes minimum.
No, I don't think so... Most will be using boost to get off the line, and if he's going to wreck anyway, it doesn't really matter if he does it at normal speed +10mph. It would make it easier for wreckers to catch up to potential victims on straights, but now they just block the track and take out the leader...
All in all, I think a boost button would not in any way have a negative impact in wrecks or the act of wrecking.
Yeah, maybe add the option to restrict its usage to x times per race, or a total amount of x seconds...
Kind of like A1GP and Champcar (if it simulates real racing, add all the real options)
