I "was inspired" to make the GTI after looking at Golfs, (IE-edited out the background and then skewed it to be italic, ). I don't see that one as much of a problem, red's not a new accent color for letters in that type of badge, and VW's isn't italic. I thought of, and may, just make all 3 letters grey though. As for the LFS emblem, I guess you're right, a tad Buick'y, haha. Didn't notice that, guess I don't look at Buick's too much, lol. I may try and do up somthing else somtime soon, but for now I'll just stick with that one. (unless anybody has any specific design suggestions) Thanks for the constructive criticism.

Wow, I didn't realize so many people disliked the current guages, haha. I think the current ones are just fine, I'd just like to have a background texture I can edit if I wanted. I did what the most of you have done now, switched the speedo to digital, and I've gotten used to it..

Well, if anybody actually read that extreeeeemely long winded reply above, I went ahead and made up my own "LFS" emblem. It's not somthing big and detailed, just a tiny, low-res little thing, to do exactly what I said above.. fill the hole where a car should have an emblem, (and didn't come with one) I took the 3 colors of LFS, yellow, grey and blue, and stuck them in a small, shield shaped thingie, lol. The colors obviously represent LFS, and the shield, uhh..it's whatever you want it to be. Simple, but serves its purpose - represents LFS as the car manufacturer, and adds small detail to overall appearance. Unless I figure a way to improve on it, I'll likely use it on all my skins.. Oh, the original idea was to actually make it an LFS inside the shield, like in the game's Icon, but I couldn't get the F to do anything visually attractive with such a small area to work with, hence the 3 blocks.

I spose I'll go ahead and do the textures, and try the smoke mod later - though I bet it'll bump my FPS. I currently run between 30-40, (limited to 40) Was going to go ahead and checkout the hi-res sky textures, but it's time for bed, lol..

BINGO! We have a winner. Thanks a bunch man.. Didn't even think of the DIR name, though now that I think back, I first installed the demo onto my desktop, (not knowing it wouldn't auto-choose it's location), and personally made the folder for it etc. (utilizing spaces in the name) I'll email Ketgy that this little tidbit should be included in the ReadMe, as I'm sure I won't be the last one to run into it.. Thanks again. Now to go post questioning the smoke mod...

Ok.. Laaate lastnight I picked up Pitspotter for myself, and I'm having the exact same problem XXRoy was, though with both my firewall's off, and it added to the allow list for Winblows firewall anyways, I'm still getting the timeout. (I had opened port 29999 as well, but closed it again after reading this thread..) HELP! lol.

I heavily use "snapshifting" when playing GT4, always have and probably always will, out of habit, haha. I haven't noted my using it in LFS, as engine braking seems much more realistic, and i tend to drive the slower stuff anyways. I'll have to try it, just to see how it works myself, though I doubt it'll become an LFS-habit there too. Flatshifting.. I can't stand to do that, just because how unrealistic it sounds, and how often you'd have to hear it. I have auto-cut/blip on, because for now I'm stuck driving with a joystick, and throttle blips/cuts are just too much input on one stick to keep from flubbing up your steering in the process. I have severly damaged the XFG's little 1.3L by continously slamming down gears and banging the absolute top of the tachometer, over and over and over. It eventually pops constantly and has very little power. I have to try REALLY HARD to get the damage so bad that it'd make much of a difference in any races though. (and if you were shifting that poorly, you wouldn't be worried about placing in said races anyways )

EDIT-oh yeah.. I completely agree with the above post. I'd love to see all that type of damage modelled! (and more, like cracked glass for the cars that wouldn't use plexiglass) I remember the game that got me into driving games.. The Duel TestDrive 2. As far as I know, that was the first series, and one of the very few games to ever even let you, blow your engine and strip gears. (though IMO, the series died after "The Duel", and never came back) It flat out rocked for the time. (and though it was called arcade racing, I consider it an early street racing simulation, haha) I dunno if Porsche's and Ferarri's of the 80's didn't have 'em, but that game didn't even give you rev limiters. You went too far over redline and you were done. It was hard to strip gears, but you could. I remember quickly shifting from like 2nd-4th, to make sure I didn't blow the engine upshifting past the dead 3rd, as when a gear went, it'd just rev like in neutral, and like I said, there was no rev limitation other than a popped engine/game over. That was back before they knew they were supposed to make games easier for the sissies..

I would guess, if completely blacked out, then you get into how the lights work/bleed through after being repainted etc, and it could get a little complicated on the dev's end. (complicated, because some people may want to have a smoked appearance, whereas others might want a completely taped off tailight etc) Even with my lack of knowledge on how all that works, I would say it could be done/made to function on a few different levels - same as a skilled person can do tons of cool things with repaints, if they know how to work well with layers etc.

Quote from ColeusRattus :Well, with fictional brands (the XR seems to mee more like the model and the GT like the spec) would not only create a lot more immersion and atmosphere, but help new players to identify the cars more easily. If we are honest, the letterd+numberd combinations have nothing remarkable. just compare the emotion transportet: F575M or Ferrari F575M Maranello.

We all agree that the devs should concentrate on the more important base of the program, but this is an issue which can easily be solved by this very creative community. The involvement of the devs would be minimal: picking the most fitting brands and put the name and logos to the car selection (not even on the skins, as they are edited by most recares anyways...) and on the homepage.

LfS is an outstanding racing game as it is now, concerning physics and drivability. Graphicwise it may not be state-of-the-art, but still, the looks are gorgeous. The presentation of the game though, is very basic. It lacks in the love for detail (that all the devs obviously possess) to impress the audience.
I can't describe it any other way than there is no adequate framework around the races. It does leave beginners quite alone in it's vast multitude of options and does not manage to induce the "I am a racedriver" feeling, you do not "smell the gasoline and oil".
The driving school is a step into the right direction IMHO. The background in the menu looks good, and, contradicting the whole GUI from the game, is not too abstract. If it would include awards at certain milestones (like advancing to the next class of cars), it would be even better.

Adding car brands would just be another logical step to suck the player into Live for Speed...

If anyone was touched by my "speech", I can mail you handkerchief-templates to print out

I agree. (not complaining about the game here at all, just noting some thoughts I had comming in as a new player, only about 2 weeks ago..) After downloading the demo I was extreemely impressed by the physics, and by how smoothly the whole game ran on my rather dated system, with graphics cranked to the max. (I hang between 30-40fps, which in my mind is right where it needs to be - preferrably starting at 32..) After a few days of goofing off with the demo though, I started thinking, hmm.. no money to win/use, no parts to buy, and for a very short stint, I started to lose a little interest. Of course, that didn't last long because of how awesome the game is, and I decided why not go ahead and buy S1 and see how I like it/upgrade to S2 when my holiday budget allows. Now I had a few more cars to expierience and this was neat, though I was still a little bored with the fact that you could pick and tweak every aspect of any car, at any time - no unlocking of anything, no overall challenge.. not that this is a bad thing, just it's what we've all been made accustomed to/somthing that helps hold people to a game, clearly layed out goals. (and also, not that the game needs to conform to the strategy of every other game on the market, I understand and appreciate how LFS is a unique simulation expierience etc) Anyways though, I got involved in this BB and grew a great appreciation for what these 3 guys were doing, and decided screw it, I'll go ahead and upgraded to S2, even if I can't afford it quite yet, haha. Again, I had more cars to play around with and this was fun, though again I started thinking, hmm, nothing to win, nothing to unlock. It was probably a few days later that I started to get into online driving, (I'd been holding off, since I really feel you need a wheel to play the game), and finally realized, the game wasn't about unlocking cars/buying parts etc, it was about simulated, online racing, and the fun to be had was definetely with the masses online, and that the fact that every car was mechanically identical was actually a very cool thing, and competitive feature. All that said though, I think some form of unlocking/winning things could suck more people into the game, and keep them playing offline when they aren't able to connect to the internet. Even somthing as simple as awards given within the driving school, as ColeusRattus suggested. Onto the actual topic of conversation though, emblems, haha. (and sorry for the long post, that's a self known downfall of my typing/explaining my thoughts )

Emblems... I was sitting here looking at the XFGti repaint on my desktop, silently trying to figure out what to do about my crappy looking little emblem on the nose. The resolution just isn't high enough to make what I have look any good at such a small size, and I was thinking, I could do better.. Then I started wondering if anybody else thought the cars looked a little bare, and would want a uniform LFS emblem? I'm not even talking as complicated as multiple emblems/manufacturers for each car, I just mean a simple emblem that could be used on every car, showing that they are all manufactured by "LFS", and filling the bare spots where we are all so used to seeing a symbol. (so I decided to search, and found this thread..) First I tried to put a Mazda emblem on the nose of my XF, but as stated, it just didn't work, so then I stole an emblem off a different repaint, but decided I didn't quite like it either. After thinking it over for a little while I decided to just make somthing that looked like a general emblem, to fill the bare spot, but that it was kind of silly to try and call it any specific brand of car. It's not, it's an LFS car, it's unique, and to me, seeing one with a Mazda emblem on it sitting next one with say, a Mitsubitchie emblem in the same spot, just seems kind of odd to me. Anyways, what I'm getting at is just that I'm interested in one, uniform, LFS emblem, to be used on each and every car. (though removeable/repaintable for anywho desire to totally customize their car) Definitely not an important feature/change to the game, but somthing that I believe would make the cars seem a little more realistic in appearance.. and I'm not bashing on anybody who likes the ability to make their car a "240sx" while the next person makes it a "Starion", that's actually really neat, but I think a uniform emblem/badging would be a good thing to have just the same, at least at the start. IMO, the cars just look too bare without emblems and badges, as found on real cars. (badges.. like the XFGti could have a little "ti" symbol somewhere, maybe replacing the stock location of XF on the lower right) Ok, I'm done, sorry again for the horrendously long post. Anybody with me on the emblem/badging thing though?
Key Assignments..

Yet another unimportant wish for LFS, haha.. Make it possible to put a few multiple, less important, key assignments on one single key/button. (specifically such as the horn and flashing your headlights) New'ish around here and lastnight I figured out how to flash your headlights, which an be a good thing if you're trying to notify a slower/injured driver to move over etc. I decided I'd just assign the horn/headlight flash to the same button, but realized this wasn't possible, not even if I used my joystick software. No matter how you go about trying it, (unless I just didn't think of how to do it), LFS ends up with a conflict/not letting you assign things.

I suppose this idea is like many others in the wishing well, which will be repeated quite a few times, and has been already. I had a thread on the same topic. I don't want to see riced up lights either, but I think if we can do skin repaints, the lights should be repaintable as well. (in a fashion so each can see eachothers personal "touch") Do we make doing repaints unavailable because we're afraid of somebody ricing one up? No, we don't worry about it, and in the event that we do see a personal skin that's, say, not to our likeing, we just laugh at it silently and keep on racing. I want "skinned" headlights/tailights...

Quote from deggis :The thing what pisses me off is that they call Forza (and GT4) a sim (which is bullshit). All the 100 000 000 console fan boys who play Forza/GT4 think it's the ultimate simulation just because the marketing man invented a good slogan. I've never got convinced a single fan boy that Forza/GT4 is just a semi-sim/arcade.

Well, I was about to say you could convince me, but I'm already on your train of thought, haha. I've been a GT4 fan boy from before the first one hit the shelves, (and still am), but I agree, it can't be called a full "simulator". If it was, it just wouldn't sell. (though compaired with 90% of all the other console driving titles, I'll let them call it a simulator, haha) I'm gonna go on to back GT4 in this thread though, above Forza. I know many will dissagree, but that's just me. I've never been impressed enough with any X-Box racing titles to even bother buying an X-Box, and Forza hasn't done it for me either. (GT is the reason I have a PS2, and will have a 3) It's a great game though. As for the competition in GT4, I purposely give myself competition. I don't go nuts and just deck out each car to the max, I "tastefully" mod them to be on the edge of the pack/realistically budgeted, and I try and race cleanly, (no bumpercars to get around the corners), and due to that, it's still all about the driving to me. Like stated about Forza above, it's great for drunken weekend driving with your buddies too, haha. LFS and the GT series will probably be the only two titles I faithully play for a long long time though, and I can't wait to finally get a DFP. But back to the original topic.. Yeah, Forza should be a good diversion, get it and have fun! (or if you have access, rent it first, as well as GT4)

EDIT-oh yea, LFS RULES ALL THOUGH!!!

Yeah, I snagged those a short while back, thanks again.. I'll just blame it on my driving with a joystick for now, (and pretend I'm not still a n00b )

That's very likely a big part of my problem - I'm stuck on a joystick until I can snag DFP. I've got it setup to drive pretty well in the XFG, but it may need some more tweaking to deal with a RWD, or might always just be a little twitchy. I'll play with the compensation, thanks..
XRGT sets?

Hi all, new'ish here.. I've always really enjoyed racing with slower cars, and I'm starting to get the XFG down. Now I'd like to get a good handle on the XRGT - low HP RWD fun. No matter the setup, it seems to always be pretty wild/unpredictable in corners though, not to mention slower than the XFG. Are these just characteristics of this car, or do any of you have specific setups you'd like to share/point me to? I just snagged the Team Inferno sets and it still seems a bit slow, and crazy in the corners.. (unless really babied) Since I'm kinda new to the car, I could just not be pushing its limits really well, and that'd explain a little why I keep getting such slow laptimes, (at Blackwood), but it still seems too crazy in a corner for a 2500lb 140hp RWD car..
