This was the first race I used the live timing data from Formula1.org and I have to say it is pretty good, knowing the timing information gives you a much better idea of how everyone is doing. Watching Hamilton peel off lap after lap that was a second or more a lap faster than anyone else until after the final saftey car was a great way to watch his progress. Frankly it was not a 'Senna' like performance, it was far more like Prost or Shumi. He did exaclty what was needed, banged in the fast laps when required and never put a wheel wrong. Accusing him of being anything other than great is like saying Ronnie O'Sullivan is not great for knocking in a 147 or similar. Yes he is 'just doing his job' but he is currently doing it better or more consistantly than everyone around him. Funnily enough that is how you win championships.
ATi tray tools does not always work for me or my friend. So far that is an X700 Pro, X800 GTO and an X1950Pro, so it's not an issue with the cards. However, if you do use ATT then you can always alt tab out and select the profile for AA/AF and then alt tab back in. I assumed it was down to the way ATT checks to see what executable is running but occasionaly it fails to apply AA and AF even when they are forced.
Nice objectivity you guys have. No it is not supported by either Doom 3 or Quake 4 (nor are they 'ram and vram hogs').
Now that DX10 is out we should see support for PPU (Physics Processing Units) increase as DX10 supports physics shaders that can be run on GPUs or PPUs. The 'big' game that supports the PhysX is Unreal 3. It will be interesting to see if it can generate enough
interest to gain a foothold in the market. There are previous threads about the possability of LFS supporting either a dedicated PPU or the DX10 shader physics but it was considered unlikley until the majority of users have them installed. Which means that LFS will not be supporting them anytime soon unless we all go out and buy one.
I'm with Tristan here, he is just doing his job, the fact theat everyone around him has failed to do thier job to the standard they should be means nothing. Fact is, if MS were still at ferrari he'd have an easy 40 points right now.
I have had a look through this section and can't find anyone else with this issue but it looks like you can still jump the start. I don;t know if this is intentional or not, or if it was just a glitch.
In the first screenshot you can see that I have engaged 1st before it is green and in the second you can see that I am doing 3mph before it goes green. No penatly was awarded as can be seen from the replay. If it is just a case that I had not passed outside my box on before the green light then I guess that is an accurate simulation of a start but I don;t know if that is the intention. Also this was done with patch W17.
1st gear before start
3mph before start
sorry if this has been dealt with but I didn't see anything relating to it.
An auto director mode had occured to me to but if you ever play anyother game with an auto director you soon find that it is useless as it will switch from the leading pack battle to the backmarkers being lapped. In general I'd prefer the option to control it myself over the computer having 'an idea' of what to look for.
Edit:
Cheers Tristan that certainly works in replay mode. I'd tried clicking on the names but never thought to click on the contol type. If it works in the qually I'll be very happy.
I'm not really sure that the title really conveys what I'd like added to the game but this is something that has bugged me of late.
Background
We host a monthly LAN party at the local University and around 20-30 folk attend regularly. At each LAN I have prepared a 'race weekend' format championship. About 10 folk race in the championship (they are only running the demo - trying to convince them that it's worth the money). We have a large screen and projector to display the race for folk to see.
Problem:
During quallifying the order of the cars is determined by thier order starting the session, so switching views from car to car to follow and commentate on the proceedings is difficult as after the initial lap some cars are out of order and there is no way of knowing where the next car is going to be that you are going to switch to using the tab key. For the race this is no problem with the exception of lapped cars.
Solution:
In spectator mode have an ability to select individual cars with timing information constantly available.
This is not something I expect in the next patch, but I'd like it to be considerd before release as it would make demonstrating the game to others much nicer.
Also I'd really like the ability to 'cut' my own version of the race using either the cameras that are provided but allowing user input for panning/zooming. Or for all cameras to be user decided. It would make the championship something worthy of recording as a movie then. I understand that both of these probably require quite a lot of work and I'd far rather have a complete game/simulator first.
Cheers
(yes I know some of these things are available through 3rd party mods)
If I remember correctly this is part of the Dave Perry iniative to get loads of mod developers to help out in the early stages. There is a website about that basically allows you to join the team of developers with the hope of one day getting taken on as staff. If he is tapping the collective pool there is a better chance that we'll get the game we want but from what I can see they are drawing exculsively from the pool of players that are interested in MMO not racing. The reason that I love LFS so much is that its racing first everything else second. Dave Perry has an interesting history with fun games and we know he loves fast cars. My guess is this will be more mainstream bollox to appeal to the console users and crossover for the PC. Expect shiney graphics , modable cars (yes, NOS) and other crap that fills out the game to disguise the fact that there is no racing.
I really hope I'm wrong but all you need to do is look at how many 'commercial' simulators are released nowadays compared to the peaks of the late 90s.
Bottom line folk just ain't interested enough in simulators (no, train simulators do not count.) anymore. All the more reason to pour your money and praise on the LFS developers for essentially keeping the genre alive.
STALKER and FEAR do not compare. FEAR is a one trick pony in the atmosphere front and a linear shooter behind it (a damn fine trick and good shooter but still). STALKER is more akin to System Shock/Oblivion/Deus Ex. From what I've seen so far it is very well detailed and realised environment that has an interesting 'mood'. The 'feel' of the game is similar to that of FEAR and quite different to that of the iD based shooters which helps slow the pace of the game and make it more tense. How the overall story shapes up I'll just have to wait, not played it through yet and from what I can see there is plenty to keep me amused.
Well, yeah this is driver error, but from what I saw not to the same extent some people seem to think. The car was sideways yes, but the problem was that when he landed the front wheels were not straight, the front left digs in and causes the car to roll, if the front wheels had landed straight (and level would have avoided further damage) he'd have been fine IMHO. Still, it is evident that he saw the roll coming a mile off otherwise it's unlikely he'd have recovered as fast as he did.
Only in cars with no significant aero component surely. An F1 car and GTR/DTM class cars all get heavier with load, which is why they need power steering. TOCA and other similar class cars should be the same but to a lesser degree. No?
First off let me justify me asking this question here by saying that it is one of the more active and friendly racing forums I frequent.
The reason I ask is that i'm having issues getting my Logitech Formula Force GP to work properly with it, the FF effects are all reversed (car gets lighter as it goes faster) and it does not seem to have an option or fix anywhere.
Just wondering if anyone had similar issues and found a workaround.
The reason that I'm even playing the game is that I found it in my collection and realised I never completed it. Now that my gamepad (what I've used for all arcade racers to date) has passed on I want to complete the game then ebay it with the rest of my old games. I will get back to LFS shortly but I really have an urge for arcade racing right now.
Thanks in advance.
EDIT
Sorry I should have been clearer, the game I'm having difficulty with is TOCA Race Driver, the first one. Not the original TOCA.
Just had a quick shot there, looks like it could be something we play at our monthly lans due to it not being quite as hardcore as some sims and being WTCC all the noobs can get away with and enjoy swapping paint. Not sure I follow where all the anti steam vibe is coming from. If what you say is true then I'm guessing all you steam haters are positively fuming about vista and all the HD content protection that will be coming into play in '08.
I find that I drive like blackrabbi on the road, so I decided that until i have another outlet I'm not goint to drive, now I cycle everywhere, i still have all the aggresion and skill but it's outlet that is at worst going to kill me but more probably just end up in a damaged ego.
DC will help the team secure the Constructors Championship with solid if uninspired driving while Webber will maybe not always have the pace to see off the Ferrari but will be far more consistant than Massa and get a big enough points lead over Kimi in the initial races that he can coast to victory with 2nds and 3rds in the latter part of the season.
Alonso will be gutted that his car loves to park up after 20 laps and have a smoke, Hamilton will cause much destruction at the start after a spectacular first qually and subsequently be replaced by Mika - Ron Dennis loves me - Hakkinen.
Button and Rubens will show marked improvements but will ultimately fail, time after time after time.
Do we even need to mention the Renaults? They will be nowhere, I wouldn't trust Giancarlo to finish a race if his life depended on it, he is nowhere under pressure and his new team mate is not going to inspire him to greatness. I feel sorry that Kovalainen is having to to take 2nd spot to Giancarlo.
Everyone else will be further back, I don't think the Toyotas will have much to do with the championships beyond the first few flyaway races.
They are cable pull so you want to eliminate any give in the cable run, make sure he is using non compressable cable guides and proper shoes for where the guide ends. You might find there is an adjuster on the lever that allows for a different angle of pull, giving a greater braking force. It should be possible to readily lock either the front or rear brake with disks so I'm unsure why he wants more force, generally people want more modulation.
I am not a fan of MS, and I do quite like FA, however, for MS to leave in anything other than on a win would be to tarnish an outstanding career of victories. Politics aside he will be remembered by those of us who care as a damn good racer. (Just a shame some of the time he resorted to underhand tactics)
Silentwar did nothing wrong, after he is spun by the guy directly after the initial slide he is left on the racing line, the next car leave a visable trail of his braking to avoid the stricken silentwar. Silentwar does the decent thing and move directly off the racing line. However he is tagged by someone who could have been overtaking or could simply have been looking to go down the other side of silentwars car (but I can only assume he'd do this to arrive at the apex quicker with the intention to pass). If it had been me I'd have moved aswell. Definately no need for a direct to pits.
$5 million for thier antics on the podium. Thoughts? Do you care? Did you notice? Are you still miffed that MS has not had a public flogging? Do you really wish they went back to slicks and no areo?
Well I have been racing for a LONG time now and as such i can't really say that any of the afore mentioned games have not affected me in some way.
So rather than saying which 3 individual games are my fav I will say this.
Geoff Crammond's:
GP series and stunt car racer. GP was awesome (until GP4) and stunt car is one of those games that needs a remake
Codemasters:
TOCA and CMR, insta fun games the like of which you will not see outside and arcade nowadays.
GPL/LFS:
There are no other race sims on my pute, if all the tracks for GPL were available in LFS or if the physics model of LFS was available in GPL then there would be only one.
Honerable mentions go out to GT and Pole Position. GT almost made me buy a console and Pole Position ate WAY to much of my pocket money.
EDIT:-
I forgot the classic that was Viper Racing from '98 DAMN that was a hard game, almost like GPL in terms of grip until you upgraded your car. Physics were 'interesting' at times but it was always fun.
Yellows are trickier than blues IMHO. I came round the last corner on Westhill Reversed to find that the guy in front had tangled with someone else. Yellows are displayed but clearly as it a straight I'm going to lose a ton of time if I lift much. The guy behind tucks in behind me and matches my speed. The guy in front looks like he's gathered it together and I pick the normal racing line down the straight to avoid hitting him, but he does not see this and instead of putting on the brakes he rolls into our path. Guy behind doesn't have a chance, he is millimeters from my bumper and is just matching my pace. We collide, now, clearly I didn't lift half as much as I would have done in real life, the real life crash probably would have killed us all But was the accident caused by me and the guy behind me or by the numpty spinner who didn't check the track?
Blue flags are mainly less of an issue as, to have caught the player, you must already be faster than them so you just have to pick your spot carefully and hope that they notice when you do.
Yaaar, to be sure, gettin your o'erdraft extended be a tricky and treacherous thin'. If ye were to insist on the penalty of walking the plank though, they might see your reasonin'.
