Better mouse control
Hi, would it be possible to have control of the mouse? The throttle can hit too hard with mouse too quickly in turns and you gotta on/off click and that heats up the fronts, hard to keep the boost going, etc.

I love the XRR but it's very very difficult to compete w/mouse if I can't slow down max throttle control, so far it seems to take a sec or so to reach full throttle but it's just not enough delay....

XRT I can't drive AT ALL because it'll just slide out of control like it's wheels are ice blocks, any set.

XRG, etc are okay though the heavy throttle beats on the front tires after a lap or two I can't race w/out pit.

We need to think of a nifty method, maybe a button we can define to max throttle when pushed? IE: 50% when pushed, then throttle returns to normal after you corner or whichever. I use A for clutch and the mouse wheel for shifting (If you dont use that, ouch....) so pushing a button on the keyboard isnt a issue
You might want to try the steering out what i used. I made a tutorial on this too. Steering with mouse left/right, accelerate/brake on up and down.

I used left click on clutch, wheel as shifting and right click as handbrake. Was so good, drove few months with it and i had alot better results than on keyboard (except drifting). Its very hard tho.

There is one solution.

Buy a wheel
My solution to this problem, in case you don't have money, space, time or interest to make the wheel worth it: practice a lot with the mouse.

I do practice a lot with the mouse, I have over 2+ LFS accounts, been playing since over 4 years with touchpads/mouses.

and Yes I can use touchpad fine, same issue arrises is the hit of the throttle making control/tire.... bad

No wheel for me.... I want clutch/brake/gas pedals and a gooood wheel that wont break.... considering I need a new computer over a steering wheel. Hell I need a new mouse, keyboard, etc first everythings over 6yrs old.

hazaky, I did that with a gamepad I had, left knob was up/down for throttle/brake got kinda difficult.

To be honest, driving with mouse and keyboard has its issues but it's not quite that problematic. If you have difficulties with the XRG on most tracks, there's more to it than a half-throttle button. There are tracks that demand more from tyres than other tracks, but there are also tracks that one can drive forever on and not overheat anything.
1) Shifting with the mouse wheel feels very clumsy and slow to me. I was constantly missing shifts and double shifting. I'd find it far harder to steer accurately if I was doing that. I use LMB and RMB to shift, it's quicker and more accurate to tap the button.
2) Disable Enhance pointer precision in the control panel, it's terrible.
3) Use less than the maximum steering lock, especially on RWD cars. It helps you to stop turning the fronts too much and burning them, and generally helps with being smoother.
4) A really slow button control rate is bad for the clutch. I can use 7 with TBOs without a problem (in that lowering it would not improve laptimes or handling). For this reason, I can't help but think that your approach to mouse driving is a bit off the mark. It may be good to aim to have pedal-like throttle and brake response, but until we get the possibility of adjusting their response maps (the curves), I would recommend not trying to drive as if you did have pedals (i.e. so progressively). Setups will need adjusting to be suited for a more on/off driving style, but I think it's more beneficial - at least currently - than trying to replicate perfect throttle feather and trail braking.

Control with mouse is already to easy. Going fast/win is just very very difficult. Many mouse drivers do not have your tyre-heat problems. Well not more then anyone else.
Would be nice to have button which limit throtle/brake to adjustable %.

I too agree.. just a nice little handy feature that "could" be there if needed. It does not necessarily need to be used but it's there...
Well, you have a "Button Rate" or something like that, wich determines the rate that the button will go from 0 to 1. I suggest you lower that number so the acceleration and braking rate become smaller, but on the other side the response can decrease alittle. Its a trade of.
I've been playing with mouse since the beginning of S1 and I don't have
problems with it at all. I always use x axis for steering and y axis for throttle / brake and it works perfectly.

As I don't have much space for a wheel and I'm quite comfortable with mouse I don't care about buying a wheel.

The most important thing is to adjust the mouse correctly to suit your needs. I use the Logitech standard optical corded mouse
with the following settings:

Windows:
- 50% mouse speed @ 1280x1024 resolution (to be able to move from corner to corner)
- no mouse acceleration

In LFS:
- Wheel turn 90°
- Wheel turn compensation 1.00

In case somebody is interested, just watch my replay.

Driving with mouse is quite easy but requires some practice,
but this applies to wheels as well. The y axis throttle / braking
is a very important option as you can constantly drive 10, 20% throttle
and so on.

Braking requires some practice, as at the beginning you'll steer and brake at once.

When playing online I can keep up with other racers.

A useful option in hot-lapping would be to see which player uses
mouse (x, y axis) in the lfsworld.net to be able to compare with other
drivers driving this way.

i've built something specifically for this, and i've been using it for around a year very successfully.

i made a thread at the time and gathered some interest, and i am currently building a refined version, though its fundamentally similar.

they fit partially over the keyboard and when you want to troll the chat you just slip them clear of the keys.

i am considering selling them, but i dont have high production capacity at the moment.

i use a game pad, but your pedals are a cool idea.
my main gripe is the lack of clutch control i have... its either on or off, which makes it hard to launch the fxr and xrr without bogging. if the turbo isnt spooled, it stalls. if the turbo is fully spooled, it spins out.
so i end up with a ridiculously short first gear, and a huge drop to get to second.
i may be looking into making something like that.

how did you calibrate it in LFS?
what issues did you have?
could it be made to plug into a USB port?
You know what, how about adding 50 more horse power to the people with mouse!
check your attitude, it is most likely "outdated"

Heck, I run lfs on a pentium-m (my laptop) with just 32bit/1,4GHz, single-core and mouse (or wheel) with integrated 64Meg ATI 9700m (M10/11) and you keep saying you cannot control your car?

Try setting the reasonable graphics options first, then make sure you do not have accedentially switched on any mouse-pointer acceleration in X11 / X.org and then come back complaining after a long session of some serious mouse-training!

Nice try, put some more effort into it, already!

PS.: buying a wheel would make your racing benefit more than the most over-priced and decent-of-recent ****-enlargement!
Think about it twice, men.
It's not so much about the gear in detail, more about the kind of gear you need. Use the right tool for the job. Or learn how to compensate for the specific shortcomings, for crying out loud!
