Realism Comparison---RenualtF1 Onboard Lap on Top Gear Test Track
The following vid is the full onboard camera coverage of Alonso's R24 lapping Top Gear's test track, driven by the Stig.

Below is a clip from the show.

I had planned to make an onboard camera vid of the BF1 for a comparison, but later it proved my laptop couldn't live up to this goal. However I at least find that the in-game camera can be adjusted to an angle and position extremely similar to the one used in the R24. Look here---

Well, to start with, I think the sound in LFS is not as bad as people are saying, but still, it lacks that bit of raw element in RL. I don't know how the sound files are made, but it may be a good idea to sample as many RL engine sounds as possible and use them in corresponding situations. There can be a big improvement, though I can live with it for now.

The general feeling in the cockpit is about right, but I am still hugely annoyed by the tyre sound when you take a fast corner, actually IMO that's one of the worst things with the BF1. Another one is downshifting, both the ways it sounds and operates have some flaws, in the game people are making really unreastic fast downshifts. Typically it takes about 0.5 secs from top gear to the fourth or third gear, while in RL if you do that, there must be a lasting extremely high pitch sound resulting from overrevving the engine, plus several clearly recognizable change of the degree of the pitch upon each downshift. What we get is this toneless grave sound, it's almost as if the game doesn't know what sound to make when players downshift that fast.

Thanks for reading and welcome to comment.

The easy answer would be: Real time. There are no sound "files" for the engine sounds... They are all calculated as the engine runs.
hum... did the renault beat the minute or not? ^^
59 secs on the dot, so yep
I think the timer at the end of the cockpit cam video shows 59.0. And it looked wet out there, so probably could drop a good amount of time.

Well, the red light was flashing and this usually indicates the rain traction program is enabled. But it looked like he had the normal dry weather racing tires on to me. They may have put the rain program on so he could keep the car on the track?
If the Stig can get 59 seconds, I want to see what Alonso could do.

It wasn't The Stig, Heikki Kovalainen drove it with the Stig suit.

damn
next you're going to tell us the real Santa Clause doesn't have a big white beard ?

He might not have known it was Heikki. In 2004 it could have been Alonso, Trulli, Villeneuve...
I'll never know who the Stig is, but this has some cool info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stig

Damon Hill perhaps?

But as for the Renault, this is what it says there:

Quote :Heikki Kovalainen (the Renault F1 test driver) admitted to driving the Renault R24 F1 car around the track in the 2004 series, clothed as the Stig

A link to the top lap times for Top Gear's test track:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/powerlaps.shtml

The F1 was 59 seconds, the jet flew over the track, did not drive on it.

Newest addition is the Corvette Z06 (from last Sunday), which did a 1:22.4, a very fast time. Although Jeremy claimed the Z06 wasn't good for the street, I find it just fine. I also think this is the first time Jeremy ever used the USA pronunciation of "aluminum".

i loved the stig watchin his lap.. was funny as hell..
Is there any place where you can actually download the onboard video? I've found a few sites with the top gear footage, most of which is a track side view.
A bit of OT, sorry.

I was looking though the power lap times and something stroke me as weird:

BMW M3 1.31.8
BMW 535d 1.31.8
BMW 130 1.31.9

Anyone else find this a bit odd? I mean I can understand the 535d and 130 having similiar times, but the M3?!

M3 was driven by the old old stig. He was a noob. The others were driven by the newer stig.
Cool vid!!

Rofl, great video. I really do like that car. Best quote from that video is "7 liters of American Friendly Fire!!!!" Hahah.

Well I must say, I wouldn't care how loud it is or how bad it may be on the road, I'd still own one. I am sure you like it Jeff, maybe some vids of you driving it like you did with your Caterham?
You can't compare the engine sounds to that Renault, due to the switch from v10 to v8.

Eh...it was meant to be a realism discussion guys.

Don't you find downshifting quite odd?
A lot of things are missing for the F1 car in LFS.

Backfire, a "thump" sound when shifting, difference between exterior and cockpit engine noise, and lots of other things.

Only a matter of time before we get the sounds improved in LFS, THEN I think the car and all the other cars for that matter will sound better.
and Gforce. Driving a car on tarmac is like driving on perfectly flat terrain. no bumps at all. Take a look of that Renault videos. Look what kind of gforces and what size of that camera shaking is. In LFS there is a lack in feeling of speed. Because of that lack of gforce.

Great example is in MOTOGP 2 . There are great cameras there
Try increasing the G-force effects in the 'View' menu in LFS, and use a lower FOV for more camera shaking, if you have not done that already
In watching the video, I can't help but come to this conclusion:

The Renault is a Real F1 car.

The BF1 is a cartoon.

The Renault driver is deeply focused, because he could die with a tiny mistake, or at least destroy a very expensive machine.

I on the other hand, am sipping mountain dew and answering the telephone as I cruse down a long straight at 200 mph. The reset botton is an inch from my thumb. I'm noticing my shoe is untied, and it's really bugging me.

The Renault driver isn't saying much

I am saying " Hang on, hairpin....ok...yea...bring home more scotch and oreos....ok....yea....ok....gotta go....ok.....hang on.....shit....ok...gotta go "

The Renault driver is very lucky, indeed.

I should probably consider having my self frozen, because the two vastly different worlds won't be confused with each other for a rather long time.

I should mention, I don't have a problem with any of this
