before i go into things i just want to say yes i do know theres more threads but i will start a new one on this matter. well i always seem to get a stupid email from my isp saying i use too much bandwidth and they say there are going to put my on dial up speed for a month as payback. so i am forced to phone them up and say if they do i will switch to virgin (the other main isp in my country) i am on bt btw. well they send this email when my bandwidth reaces 200gb in a month. all i want to know is one thing. i am sure i am not the only one that uses this much bandwidth on a home network. because for a fact i know that if my compnay J&J Hosting only used 200GB bandwidth then something would be wrong and it would mean there is hardly any traffic on the sites. usually 100 gigs a day traffic there. but at home all i do is play lfs and download updates on a linux kernal me and my freind are making (around 4 gigs the iso is) i will put another post asap with my bandwith usage since i last rebooted my modem(it crashes when i use it too much)

Yes I am on the unlimited package but there's a "fair usage" which is only 100 gigs which in my view is nothing nowadays with all these on demand services like BBC iplayer and such. Remember when I first ever used a compute r my family only had dial up and I remember how I could only use it when we where not expecting calls. Now I have "unlimited" broadband which is slow to today's standards: 5 meg download and 256kbps upload

200GB a month is still quite a bit (around 7GB a day) and a lot more than BT used to offer.

I was quite lucky when I was on NTL/Virgin as I'd always turn down speed upgrades (every upgrade came with bandwidth limits), eventually I'd get the upgrade anyway but got to keep unlimited. By the time I moved last June I had 10MB with unlimited bandwidth and no FUP. If I'd taken the upgrades (which many of my friends did), I'd have had FUP and/or bandwidth limits.

Right now I am using Post Office, which has no limits or FUP of any kind, but the free router/modem then give you is Czech crap which quits it's job every 30 seconds so it'd be impossible to rack up any sort of usage anyway.

Your hosting company isn't running on a single consumer broadband line though.

I think the BE FUP is around 300GB/month, I never go above that. Probably only transfer about 50GB/month tbh.

I usually have around 500/500GB download/upload a month. Sometimes its 2-3x more, sometimes its the half of it. Thank god my ISP doesnt have a limit

Lol FUP I just remembered what it means as soon as I posted. And ye my company is on a ISP that does broadband for people/company's that need super quick and alot of bandwidth. But haha I bet if I really trie to use bandwidth at home I could get that email within days. I won't try cause I don't want dial up speeds

TBH 200GiB isn't so bad as a fair usage cap. I've known worse. For example with Virgin, their fair usage is only 2 or 3GiB during working hours, and unlimited outside those hours. Basically it means big downloads need to be done overnight, which is a bit of a pain, but I can happily get 50GiB night after night and have never heard from them. Bandwidth does seem throttled at peak hours though, between early evening and midnight I can only get about 250kb/s, then at precisely midnight the rate jumps back to 1600kb/s. At least when you know you can worth with it though, and I know Virgin are too huge and faceless to do anything about it if I complained anyway.

On there 20mb package you can use 3.5 gigs between 10.00 and 15.00 and 7 gigs between 16.00 and 21.00 Not bad at all really. Completely unlimited outside of those hours, though the have started throttling torrents and newsgroup traffic until midnight as you say which is a pain.

Still, you can max your line out from midnight to 10.00am all week and they wont say a word.

Thats what i was thinking lol. I have no idea what i have dowbloaded/uploaded so cant help Dont spose there are any bits of software that could tell me this?

oh, get off your soapbox... i don't seed either for a few reasons...

1) my ISP (cogeco) packet-filters P2P uploads. (you'll find this a lot in north america)
2) there are enough seeds for downloads that additional seeding is not necessary...

unless you're downloading something that's...

1) really obscure
2) using a private tracker (do people still use these?)

but then that's your own fault.

Bt slows down all p2p like if I am torrenting they slow it down
