im not going to go away and spend all my time on making textures but i was wondering how so i can have a refrence when/if i make texture

P.S. i don't have photoshop but i have gimp

Google for "dds plugin gimp".
Pick one and install.
Open lfs\data\dds folder (preferably backup the folder too),open one of the files. Understand what texture it is and edit by your liking. Save.
Relaunch LFS.

its actually fairly easy,the hardest/time consuming part for me was matching the dds to certain parts of a track
