Layout Racing League - Round 7, Rony Sprint 8, Race Summary

The fast-paced roval crafted by layoutter Rony holds Round 7 for Layout Racing League! With the [TC] Gumball 2019 as well as holiday activities kicking off, it was opportunities galore for the drivers who turned up for the race before the mid-season Summer break! [6S] SIMOX claims another fantastic win to leap into the top of the standings!

Qualifying

With traction and braking being key to the fast lap, drivers set out to find the best line possible. It was [MRc] Michal who set the early pace before Teho Ngottini pipped him. Shortly after followed [6S] SIMOX, fresh from his victory the round before, who slowly chipped away the pole time right down into the sub-1 minute times - the only driver to do so!

AA|Kadir made a comeback to the lead, qualifying a respectable 3rd ahead of Michal who was unable to find time. Behind came AS|Swiftz, [LCS-R] Texas and a surprisingly quick GT4tube. AA|Rane made a return to the series, putting his XRT in a lowly 12th with little practice, just ahead of {PROJECT}, who failed to qualify under the 107% minimum time.

Green flag for Round 7!

Side by side into Turn 1!

The flag dropped to the sound of tire squeal as the drivers put the power down off the grid, with Kadir getting an excellent launch to pass Ngottini into the braking zone, with several drivers coming close to contact as the field navigated the first turn. The leaders exited the turn 3 wide, with AA|Kadir getting the best traction to take the lead away from SIMOX as they headed into the Chicane.

Late braking goes wrong for newcomer JereLoco

As the front of the field departed, further to the back, an incident saw front-runner Ngottini get spun around by an out-of-control JereLoco after a misjudgement, with the latter receiving a Drive-Through Penalty for his actions.

JereLoco would later put himself out of the race after attempting to illegally, and impossibly, complete his compulsory pit during his penalty - getting stuck on his pit box due to an LFS glitch, suffering the same fate as SIMOX earlier in the season, forced to retire on Lap 5.

Meanwhile in all of this, GT4tube saw himself lose a spot to the fast-starting [LCS-R] Texas, as he got tangled up in the crash, with Texas now right up with the leading duo, with Kadir and SIMOX tussling it out before a small gap formed.

Kadir leads the field on Lap 3

With SIMOX seemingly unable to match the early pace of Kadir, he kept watch of his tires, weary of the high-demands of the circuit, with [MRc] Michal briefly getting past Texas down into the hairpin before the LCS-R driver retook third position.

Further down the field, GT4Tube held down 5th ahead of AA|Rane in 6th, who found himself elevated from 12th during the first lap calamity. At the back, victim of Lap 1 incident Ngottini took the chance to pit to clear his compulsory stop and to emerge in clear track, with his sights set for an ambitious podium. He followed this up with blistering early pace, threatening the mid-pack!

Weak defense sees a lead change

As the first stint of the race extended, it was obvious that the early pace of Kadir was shortlived, spending his tires too fast, falling back into the clutches of SIMOX who took the pass for the lead on Lap 7, around the outside of Turn 1 in swashbuckling fashion.

Mid-field battles during the pit stops

The race entered a lull period, with most drivers evidently choosing to pit later in the race, choosing to make time on track. Kadir was unable to keep his tires in check, falling back from SIMOX, as Texas slowly caught up. Behind, Michal, GT4Tube and Rane were all on their own piece of track as the field spread out.

Mid way through the race however, the mid-field suddenly spiced up, with Texas making a blunder into Turn 1, gifting 3rd to Michal, barely defending 4th from GT4tube into the final hairpin.

Comedy of errors see [LCS-R] Texas drop behind GT4tube in the mid field battle

A few laps passed before we saw more action, with Michal faintly defending his position from Texas, with the latter braking too late, creaming into the side of the MRc driver, sending both sideways and slowing down massively, with GT4Tube simply taking a wider line to sweep past Texas to elevate himself up to 4th, where he would hold to the end of the race for his best finishing position to date.

With only 3 laps to go, Michal was now clear of GT4tube by a margin, with Texas behind the Cruise racer, unable to close in. Behind them lay the charging Ngottini, who by now was within earshot of a podium once the drivers in front pitted.

Towards the rear, Rane and [WCL] T.Soini were in 7th and 8th, positions which they would hold to the end to finish what was a uneventful event for them. Behind, [F1] Speed'D! ran in 9th, running 2 laps down after a slow pit stop.

The pit stops saw battles near the end of the race

Lap 33 saw GT4Tube blink first, choosing to pit and emerge in a gap to attempt to fend off Ngottini. With this, it all but denied Texas an undercut, of which he should have taken much earlier if he stood a chance of leapfrogging GT4tube and possibly Michal; however, it was not to be, with Texas pitting the lap after along with Michal.

Texas pitted on the penultimate lap, and emerged behind Ngottini, which summed up a bad outing for the LCS-R racer. Ngottini on the other hand, put pressure on GT4Tube to the end, however, he had to settle for 5th, which in itself was a great comeback, considering he was facing the wrong way on Lap 1 in last place - proving once more the importance of a good strategy here in LRL!

In what was a display of prowess and great management, [6S] SIMOX takes yet another victory to vault himself up into the lead of the standings! Kadir finished in 2nd citing bad tires as the cause of his failure to mount a challenge, finishing over 12 seconds behind the winner and only a couple of seconds ahead of 3rd place man, [MRc] Michal.

Driver's Championship as of Round 7

With Pete now behind SIMOX by a hair and Trespasser now on the back foot heading into the the summer break, the racers will surely be reflecting on their season and plotting a strategy to win the next race! Who will be victorious on our return for the final 2 races of LRL Season 1?

Sorry Tres, that was stupid and unnecessary. My intention was to pit, but my calculations failed. I expected you to turn much earlier into the last corner so I could overtake you from left. Didn't go as planned and as uNite said, looked like a divebomb from me.

You dont need to be sorry, i knew the moment you maked contact that you tried to dive into pits, i was a bit mad before that at t1 where i think you missed you braking and i needed to change my turning just to avoid you driving into me Big grin well its racing, everything happens, next time if you feel that youre going 2 wheel, turn to other side, turn was to left so at that point even if you turned into me to save your car i would be ok.

Layout Racing League - Round 8, Hong Kong, Race Summary

The pack returns from the summer break with Round 8 of the season at Hong Kong. A tight, fun street circuit that previously hosted several successful races, it was make or break for several drivers, and with only 1 race remaining after this, it was all to play for! [TC-R] Pete drove a fantastic, battle-ridden race to receive another win.

Qualifying

The streets of Hong Kong played host to another interesting qualifying session, with drivers struggling to find their own piece of real estate as the times tumbled. A flurry of drivers exited the pit-lane as the green flag dropped, desperately getting heat into their tires.

Championship leader [6S] SIMOX set the early pace before B2r Spiky dipped into the 1:02s, dragging Pete along with him. Not far behind was L.Rydh and Trespasser. [WCL] J.A.Katila had great consistent pace whilst [LCS-R] Texas fought his car to try and gain time. However, by the halfway point, Pete put in a perfect lap of 1:02.42, which would not be eclipsed, staying on provisional pole to the session end.

Spiky responded but was unable to match the pole time, with Trespasser recovering lost pace to somehow place his XFG in 3rd just ahead of Katila, the World-Class-Lions driver putting his best qualifying result to date. SIMOX and Teho Ngottini rounded up the top 6, with Texas back in 10th and [TC-R] Elmo off-pace in 13th.

It's go go for Round 8!

Drivers fight for position into Turn 1

The race began with equal starts from most of the field, with Trespasser braking later than Pete and SIMOX, taking an opportunistic move to take over in the lead. Further back, Katila and L.Rydh drag-raced down the back straight, with Katila holding position into the following sector.

Up front, the top 4 were nose to tail, with Trespasser determined to hold his lead and advantage. In the mid-field, B2r Rayman had made a poor start, dropping back several positions as the field swarmed past the first lap.

Quick starting Elmo in 9th

There were movers in the race, with [TC-R] Elmo and AA|Rane making up a handful of positions in the opening laps. With limited overtaking opportunities, the drivers stayed in station for the long-run, with only a few passes taking place, namely Kage around the outside of [MRc] KIG on the penultimate corner for 15th.

The leading duo pulling a gap early on

The pace of the top 2 was quick, with Spiky and the rest of the field unable to catch up. However, with the tussling between Pete and Trespasser becoming ever more rough, what was a 3-second gap was slowly eroding and by lap 8, Spiky was now back in the battle with undeniably better tire conditions. Behind Spiky, [6S] SIMOX struggled for early pace, hanging back in 4th with the mid-field now behind him in a Trulli-train.

A bold pass attempt for 6th

With the field stuck behind SIMOX, Texas took a bold move up the inside of L.Rydh, who left the door open and dropped behind Texas, only to get the drive out of the Turn 1 exit to re-pass into turn 2. Further back, Kage and B2r Rayman fought for the minor placings, swapping positions constantly as they battled.

The overtake for the lead

Lap 10 saw Trespasser's strong defense break down after a small mistake into Turn 1 allowed Pete to draw alongside into Turn 2, passing into the lead. A few laps followed with Trespasser attempting to hold on to Pete, however, failed as the [TC] Racing driver pulled out an amazing 11-second lead in a handful of laps.

Lap 12 saw our first retirement in the form of Kage, who retired with tire trouble.

With his lead gone, Trespasser refocused onto Spiky and SIMOX who were trying to find a way past. By this point, the pit window was wide open, with a nice gap in the mid-field if anyone was to drop into after pitting.

Elmo defending his position from Pedro

A careless blunder on Lap 15

With drivers waiting for each other to pit first, it was a tense situation up front. In a flash, a rolling XFG in the form of B2r Spiky brought out the FZ5 Safety Car. In post-race, Spiky remarked that he had thought Trespasser was pitting, and was going to follow him in - commenting that "you (Trespasser" took a wide line, I thought you were pitting", and clobbered right into the side of Trespasser, rolling over in a comical fashion.

In the mess, SIMOX had taken advantage and pitted just as the incident unfolded, with no one else except [MRc] KIG towards the back of the field taking this cheat pit stop.

SIMOX leapfrogs his competitors

With his undercut, SIMOX had emerged in 2nd, much to the dismay of Trespasser. Most of the field came in on the first lap of the SC period, with Biroot choosing to stay out for track position, hoping for another Safety Car situation later in the race.

The perfect restart by the top 2

The field bunched up as they got ready to get under way for the green flag. In a surprising move, AA|Rane had jumped the restart by a mile, overtaking several drivers under Yellow, which gave him a 25 second post-race penalty.

The race restarted with the top 2 of Pete and SIMOX instantly pulling a gap on Trespasser and Katila, who were asleep on the throttle for the green flag. In the few laps to come, SIMOX tried but failed to stay with Pete, with the leader racing into the distance. Trespasser had his mirrors full of L.Rydh, the latter getting past Katila for 4th.

A botched overtake into Turn 1

The third retirement of the race came in the form of LUXANNN, who retired with a disconnect near the back of the pack.
With the race settling into place, drivers found their own piece of track and spread out well as the second part of the race neared the end. Texas was coming under immense pressure in 6th place, after failing to find a rhythm at the restart, and having to defend hard from Ngottini and the rest of the pack behind him. Biroot had pitted out of his 6th place, falling near the back end of the points positions.

With the laps tumbling, drivers were unable to find ways past each other, except on the final lap, where the battle for 8th with Elmo, Rane and Pedro heated up, with Pedro missing his braking point into Turn 1, diving past Rane and up the inside of Elmo, knocking the [TC-R] driver aside and letting Rane past as well. For his troubles, Pedro received a time penalty, promoting Elmo back into his position.

A stunning victory after races absent

However, up front it was yet again [TC-R] Pete who put in another rewarding performance to claim victory and fastest lap at Hong Kong, vaulting him past SIMOX in the championship by one singular point. SIMOX himself finished a distant 2nd, ahead of Trespasser who retained his podium ahead of L.Rydh.

Katila finished a respectable 5th, ahead of the struggling [LCS-R] Texas. Further back, Elmo earned a nice 8th place, with Biroot in 11th following his poor strategy choice. Pedro rounded off the points positions following his penalty.

Driver's Championship as of Round 8

Pete has now retaken the championship lead after his brief absence, with SIMOX on the back foot and Trespasser now out of the championship chase. Who will be LRL's first champion?
