AWS 2023 - Round 6
All-wheel-drive Winter Series 2023
Round 6

Monday,13th February
18:30 UTC / 19:30 CET / 20:30 EET

After the little tour around the globe AWS returns to home of LFS - England. 2 of last 3 rounds are held in Westhill, both in custom configurations. And custom configurations is a key word in Westhill Street Cup - a round that has been held since 2017 in various support road courses around Westhill, this year - Tunnels configuration. The front stretch is surrounded by tricky chicanes, while turn 3 will turn many minds crazy as the downhill left curve vanishes in 1st tunnel and will await many drivers scraping their cars against wall. The track features quite few signature turns - the roundabout,semi-fast righthander after back straight, the dipping lefthander that leads back towards main straight, which cut with 2 chicanes... Even if RB4 is known being heavy on it's tyres, track's average speed is quite low, which will help most drivers, but still the trait of this car has to be respected if driver wants to perform well.

With 3 rounds to go it feels like just few turns left before finish straight - the championship table has 2 distinctive leaders,so this round probably will increase or decrease a lot the intrigue for title battle. Same situation is in teams championship - if one of leading trio performs significantly better than others, the situation will be either decided or heated up,while nations leader can even wrap up the title with 2 rounds to go.

ANTTI VALTA wins Round 6 of the AWD Winter Series by Race Green!! 🔥

Valta dominated the whole field in the Westhill RGE Tunnels combo with RB4: pole, victory, fastest lap!

Championship runner-up ZFRL Thehemuli tried to overtake Valta in the first few corners, before getting involved in a multi-car pileup at the infamous hairpin!

P2 finished LB's Sobis, more than 20s behind the leader, while P3 was a contest between Vincent Adultman & MRC's Michal.
At the end, it was Adultman to finish ahead in P3, P4 for Michal, while Top 5 was completed by Lorenzo of Race Green!

Full report & stats coming later in the week

One of the 2 LFS standard cars was run this week in AWS - the RB4 GT. And it was selected to run the Westhill Street Cup round just like for past 6 seasons, this year the course was chicane rich Tunnels configuration, torturing drivers with a lot of quick direction switching. The very first visit of the field to the roundabout led to some minor contacts, where effect was expanded by some network latency, effectivelly deciding drivers championship, but the race action heated through mid field with plenty of position changes.

For the 2nd race in row the top of the podium was taken by A.Valta, but this time he did not pass a single car - he was a whole second faster in qualifying and more than a second per lap faster in race, leading all 22 laps, taking all 22 points from the round. The 2016 AWS champion was followed in finish by 2019 AWS champion - Sobis finished 2nd,which is his best finishing position since his championship season. Last step on the podium was taken by first timer - V.Adultman never finished in top5 before this season in his 19 races, this year brought him more success and 1st podium finish.

By scoring 17 points more than his closest rival in this round,A.Valta raised his gap over competition to 28 points. Even if 5 drivers still are eligible for drivers championship,A.Valta just needs to avoid being outscored by more than 6 points by Thehemuli in next race to clich the title before final round. Thehemuli still keeps his 2nd position in table, but now has near impossible task to challenge current leader. The race for 3rd place in standings is almost as tight as before this round - Michal now took over the 3rd position, but his advantage over 5th position is just 3 points with 4th position just a point behind.

Happyd still leads rookie of the year standings, but his lead has been decreased to 7 points - the driver with backwards spelled name got 4 points closer to him and can overtake him with same points rate.

The turn 4 incident made an impact also on teams championship - RGA almost doubled their lead in the table as they are now 35 points ahead of Zafiralis,MRc closed up to 1 point to 2nd position. Theoretically only Czechia can still overtake Finland in nations standings, but it is very unlikelly that Finland won't score at least 11 points during next 2 rounds, which would secure 2nd nations cup for them in row without counting points of rivals.

In 2 weeks AWS will return to Rockingham Oval after 2 years of absense - the previous 2 Rockingham 150 editions were run with RB4,this year the car has been changed to Fraud Wheeler E2,which is equipped with R4 slick tyres, making this round more racing focussed rather than tyre survival focussed. But also this brings a bit of unknown effect to the race - noone really knows how draft works with this car in this track, but surely again some teamwork might be advantageous if practiced and executed well.
