Title says it, how do I self-host a server for free? I won’t be playing on it due to it running on a vm on my big proper server!

There is no such thing anymore - all hosts are run on LFS own machines (you can select location),that has been changed to reduce piracy. All the information in hosts section: https://www.lfs.net/hosting
