V8 Racing League 2024 - information

September is here and it's time to start Race Green Event's fastest annual returning series - V8 Racing League! The season 2024 celebrates 10 years of VERL existance and will search for a champion for it's decade season with 4 races long championship, running the turbocharged FoRGE VERL 2022 over variety of LFS environments. Even if last season reached all time lowest average attendance through season, the racing for championships was still exciting,so it is deffinitelly worth it to continue this series, offering chance for previous champions put their name into history once again and all others - challenge the previous champions for chance of own glory.

League race format is quite simple and hasn't been changed - every round features 20 minutes free track qualifying and race, where lapcount is set to minimum to exceed 200 kilometers. As always no "hardcore simulation" will be enforced to keep things simple - everyone can telepit in qualifying (also in race, but that of course erases the driver's race progress),also Safety/Pace car will not be used. The race time stays in sunday evening (european time) to increase it's availability for the racers from west side of Atlantic. Season starts on 15th september with rounds set 2 weeks apart from each other.

Schedule has been shortened to 4 rounds for the decade season, visiting 4 different environments - season will kick off in Japan, which has not been visited by VERL since 2019. Kyoto 200 will be run in the roval configuration named National in reversed direction. Round 2 is a return to bumpy container storage field of Blackwood - the container sprint custom configuration has become a classic challenge in the series as it will be run for the 4th year in row,5th in total. Westhill will become the only environment to be used in every single season (other was South City, not run this year) - this year the league will follow Kyoto's example and also run in configuration named National reversed. Season finale will be held in Aston - last season the round in Grand Prix configuration was the most attended,so it was put as deciding round for this season.

Series schedule:
15.09. Round 1 - Kyoto 200 (KY National Reversed, 39 laps)
29.09. Round 2 - Containa Grand Prix of Blackwood (BL Container Sprint*, 80 laps)
13.10. Round 3 - Westhill 200 (WE National Reversed, 46 laps)
27.10. Round 4 - Aston Classic Challenge (AS Grand Prix, 23 laps)
* Custom configuration layout attached

Timetable:
17:00 UTC / 19:00 CET / 20:00 EET
- 20 minutes of qualifying
17:30 UTC / 19:30 CET / 20:30 EET - race start
* due daylight saving time change in Europe, the UTC time of round 4 will be accordingly 18:00 (Qual) and 18:30 (Start)!
* times of posted CET and EET timezones are the current times at the date - summer time in rounds 1-3,winter time in round 4.
* IMPORTANT NOTE: if you are not familiar with either CET or EET timezones, always refer to UTC to convert the correct event time to your timezone! Calendar of lfs.net website's leagues section always shows right time for your timezone!

Special notes on qualifying:
- If there is no full 40 car grid, drivers championship's top 10 drivers will be allowed to start from end of the grid if joined late and missed qualification. For 1st round last year's top 10 driver's can use this option.
- To qualify for the race drivers have to set a laptime during qualifying session within 112% of best laptime of the qualifying session. This does not affect championship's top 10 drivers as they may start the race without qualifying or with laptime outside 112% of best laptime.

Championships:
VERL Drivers Champion - awarded to a driver with the most points scored through all 4 rounds, including attendance bonus points
VERL Teams Champion - awarded to a team with the most points scored through all 4 rounds (team will score all points from it's 2 highest finished drivers and all round bonus points)
VERL Nations Cup Winner - awarded to a nation with the most points scored through all 4 rounds (nation will score all points from it's 2 highest finished drivers and all round bonus points)
VERL Rookie of the Year - awarded to a driver, who hasn't started a single VERL race before this season, with the most points scored through all 4 rounds, including attendance bonus points. (award will not be given out if less than 2 rookies have finished at least one race through season)
In all championships - in case of a tie, higher rated will be driver/team/nation with highest finishing position,if equal - it's amount,if equal - second highest position etc. If all finishing positions happen to be equal, higher rated will be selected using same system from qualifying results. If they also happen to be equal then as a tie-breaker will be used last round finishing position. In case a tied driver had a disqualification in one or more rounds,it counts as a primary rating lowering factor, when deciding tiebreak.

Rules:
We will not make a mile long rule book that noone will read completely anyway,so we will rely on common sence of competitors to behave and follow the basic Rules of Clean Racing. There will not be an admin in server who will specifically observe drivers' behaviour during the race,so any action will be made only after protest while all retirements will be investigated automatically. If any incidents reported/protested,we will take individual approach to each of them to decide best fair resolution or punishment if needed.

Basic guidelines as a reminder:
> Blue flag - you may not deny/block a passing manouvre of laping car and try a repass right after it. In qualification it means - stay off racing line and don't disturb drivers on hotlap.
> Shortcuts - 2 wheels on track at all times. Track is mostly marked by white lines, while also curbs count towards track. Overtaking outside track limits counts as illegal and will be penalized in case of a protest.
> Contacts - have to be avoided at all costs as always when racing open wheel cars, that includes also bumpdrafting.
> Pit exit - allthough there will be no mandatory pitstop in this league, due smaller fuel tank pitting will be needed,so pit exit lines will have to be respected - drivers may not cross the pit exit line with more than 2 wheels and have to make way for cars racing at full speed. Failing to comply with this rule will award them with 10s penalty, while causing incidents will result in bigger penalty. Pit entry lines will not be monitored, they serve just as guidelines.
> Pitlane speed - round 2 is run on track where is no LFS-side enforced pitlane speed limit. Here the speed will not be monitored, however if an incident happens due high speeds, driver will be penalized for avoidable incident.
> Chatting - it's not completely outruled, but still drivers are expected to concentrate on racing. In case of too much chatting while ignoring messages asking to cease chatting,a penalty may be given. In case of any abusive/offensive language a penalty will be given! Any in server present observers/spectators are not allowed to chat at all during race session!
> Lags - if there are any connection issues, driver will be asked to improve (close internet using programs). If driver will be considered as dangerous due to unstable connection and high ping,he will not be allowed to participate at the current round.
> Hacks/cheats - if used, you will not race with us. Ever. As simple as that.

Possible penalties:
> WARNING - any minor infraction that needs to be noted without penalty. Warned driver might receive bigger penalty for other infractions.
> 10s added to finish time - minor infractions, like illegal passing, pit exit line violation, too much chatting.
> 30s added to finish time - medium infractions, like causing avoidable incident[s] without serious consequences, illegal passing.
> 60s added to finish time (1 lap penalty in round 2) - medium infractions, like causing avoidable incident[s] with consequences to other drivers (like damage, multiple position loss) or unsportsmanlike behaviour.
> Disqualification for 1 or more rounds - heavy infractions, multiple incidents, unsportsmanlike behaviour. After serving disqualification, driver will automatically carry a "warning" for the rest of season.
> Series exclusion (including ban for any other events run under Race Green Events control) - serious infractions like intentional/revenge wrecking, event sabotage and any other malicious act.

VERL 2024 final standings

The 2024 season celebrated the 10 years of league's existance, however there was no celebration mood for the organizing body - the best word to describe the season is flop. Season started with 13 drivers attending round one, setting up an interesting race with highs and lows, also round 2 gathered up decent number of drivers to provide some excitement, but in 2nd half of the season just handful drivers arrived to drive the 2 half distance races, where 2 late joiners rescued season finale to be entered in league's history as lowest attended race ever. 19 signups alone describes the situation - that's 8 less than previous lowest number of 27 (which coincidentally is also all time highest attendance in a single round),set 2 years ago,15 of them actually participated, which is 4 less than 2 years ago. This resulted in 8.5 drivers per round, which is 2 less than last year and almost 6 less than all time average attendance. Still the few racers were ready to tackle the competition and have some fun with challenging car over challenging courses to find out the best between attending drivers, pushing the intrigue of drivers championship winner until last laps.

VERL 2024 Drivers Champion: ZFRL•Thehemuli
When looking back at Thehemuli's results, you can see constant progress - he made his debut in VERL in 2021,where he finished 7th in standings, year later he was 3rd and last season - 2nd. So it was quite logical to end up 1st this season allthough he would probably admit himself - due lack of competition. The finn finished 3rd in season opener, had to settle for 5th place in the longest and most difficult round of the season, but won the remaining 2 rounds to outscore early leader of season. Thehemuli added to his achievements his first 2 wins (had 2nd place finish as previous best),his 1st pole position, his 2nd and 3rd fastest laps of the race and raised his top5 total to 13.
Zesty started the season with 2 wins, which actually made a streak of 3 wins as he won final round of last season, however he never arrived in 2nd half of the season, effectivelly giving up his drivers title and finish 2nd in standings with 3 points gap to leader. The 2 wins makes him a 4-time race winner in VERL,while he also added a pole position to make a total of 3 and 2 fastest laps to have 4 of those. Rony finished 3rd in standings losing to 2nd place only on tiebreaker - he started the season with 5th place finish and finished as runner up in remaining 3 rounds, taking pole position in season finale which is his first in VERL. The top5 finish count was increased to 25 - 3rd place in standings is a repeat of previous season,a position lower than result of VERL's inagural season and 4th overall podium.

VERL 2024 Rookie of the Year: - (not awarded)
According to rules, the award is presented if at least 2 drivers with rookie status finishes at least one race - that was not the case this season as just a sole rookie finished a race (2 actually),so he can be still called as best rookie, but does not receive an actual title. The Czech driver Pedro Dandy finished 8th and 6th in season's first half, but just like most did not attend the 2nd half, ending up 8th in overall standings - 1 position ahead of defending drivers champion.

VERL 2024 Teams Champions: Team S1DUS
With 2 wins and a 2nd place finish, the champions of 2020 and 2021 started the season very strong, taking a commanding lead in the championship standings - that was actually enough to hold the lead until end of season despite not scoring a single point later with huge help of half distance for half points rule. That's a big improvement compared to 8th position the team took last season.
The defending 2-time teams champions RGA came 2 point short (tying would not be enough as they would lose on tiebreaker) to title defence and had to settle for 2nd place in standings despite 6 top5 finishes through the season. The drivers champion's team Zafiralis finished 3rd in standings almost with sole effort of the champion - rest of the team helped only with 10% of their points score. The finnish based team lost a position compared to last season.

VERL 2024 Nations Cup winners: Finland
No surprises in nations cup - Finland still keeps the ground as being the best nation in VERL as their drivers scored already 5th VERL drivers champions title. This year the finns scored 2 race wins (both by the champion) and a total of 9 top5 finishes and led standings from 1st round unchallenged. This is Finland's nations cup for the 5th year in row and 9th time in total.
The other 2 positions on nations podium were taken by nations with a single driver, both also represented on drivers championship podium in same order - Malaysia is 2nd thanks to Zesty's 2 wins and Latvia is 3rd with Rony's 3 2nd place finishes. Malaysia climbed up 2 positions in standings compared to last season,Latvia repeated same result.

Lack of interest in this competition of course raises plenty of questions marks over future of the 10 years old league. It was started 2015 as sort of replacement of LFSCART by NDR,which was previously the longest running LFS league with the fastest aids free LFS car Formula V8. It was always meant as high level league demanding plenty of skills from drivers, that's why we upgraded to the 650 horsepower car when the cars mods were available, throttling down the power on 2nd season with new car to 600 horsepower, but with this also the attendance went down - 15.3 drivers per round in FO8 era versus 10.2 in the new turbo era. This means Race Green Events will take some consideration how or if the new season will take place in 2025 - feel free to post your input of thoughts here!
