Quote from mrfell :Yes it was the Cosworth!!
I thought this was the muts nuts, heck the driver actually changed gear!!
You're probably right about TD1, I can't seem to find any in game shots. I can't remember how many times I wanted to punch the screen because I over-revved the damm thing.
As for chequered flag, if it never happened, would we all be here today

wee i thought im the only one that payed for this game lol because i never met a single person that even know that game at all.

About TD i recently gave TD2 another try with dosbox, works pretty good but the graphics omg i cant believe this was the nonplusultra these days
Quote from thisnameistaken :Ah, you're confusing Mario Kart 64 with "Super" Mario Kart - the original and best! I actually didn't like '64, I thought the circuits were a bit boring and the weird "it's faster if you're always skidding" business was very off-putting.

The versus mode was still good fun though. Those ninja overarm banana skin shots were the coolest kills in any game ever.

Yea I had super mario kart on the snez then I got the 64 version later, I thought i'd add the 4 player part in though! The origional was the best, I can't remember everything about it but i'm sure my chosen career path was mario karting at one stage.

Yea I should've added the Grand Prix games, on my dads old PC's I had them all, they were all great and the next version of it was even better, What made me really liked GP3 was I would roll Shumi at the starts and he would fly everywhere with parts flying everywhere.
1. ToCa 2 (not RD2!)
2. Stunts
3. GP2
Stunt Car Racer (Amiga)
Sports Car GT (PC)
GT Legends (PC)

Actually i need a Top 4: Hot Wheels on C64
(LFS goes without saying)

1. SODA

2. N2003

3. Stuntcar Racer

also oldies like, poleposition, revs, continental circus, lotus challenge, offroadracing, GPL and others ...
Slicks 'n' slide
Still have that on my pc, and it even runs on DosBox!

And I second that NFS:PU was the best NFS ever
Attached images
slicks.jpg
The most memorable/addictive ones.

1. Stunt car racer

2. F1gp 2

3. Need for speed
#33 - Jakg
1. GPL - has been on more hard drives than I've had hot dinners. It's still there...

2. Indianapolis 500 - probably the first time I ever contemplated car set ups - iirc you had the option to switch clouds off to gain fps

3. Tie between F1GP & GP2... The world according to Geoff Crammond. Probably did more between them for my interest in F1 than anything else, ever.
1. N2002/N2003 - My introduction to online racing, haven't played anything better yet.

2. Indy 500 - On a 286 IBM, with a relatively huge monitor (19" I think) and the ugly pink CGA colors. First racing game I ever played. Only later I realized it was by the same company as N2002 etc. Dunno how I actually managed to make a fast setup at that age, all I remember is that I was able to fight for the win, and when I actually managed to win, it was great.

3. V-Rally - On Playstation 1. This was lots of fun on splitscreen.
electrik i love you new ava

pretty hard to pick only 3

1. mario andrettis racing challenge
a rather unknown racing game which tried to simulate quite a few car classes (all the ones mario raced in) it was in fact the first x86 game i played and owned (excpet for nibbles and gorillas obviously)
i still get around to play it from time to time

2. stunts
timeless classic which is still the best of its kind ... i just love it

3. fatal racing/whiplash
i got it for free with my voodoo graphics back in the days and instantly liked it ... it had a lot of the things stunts had mixed with my favourite way to multiplay ... splitscreen
1. F1 GP (Amiga - MicroProse ~1991)
2. Test Drive I and II(Duel) (Amiga - ~'87-'89)
3. Slick'n Slide (PC - early '90s)

I remember playing 100% length races and full seasons in F1 GP (mother wasn't happy when I spent hours next to computer)

I've tryed Test Drives with emulator in PC, but I have to say that the control of the car doesn't feel quite so realistic as in LFS
Quote from TheDeppchef :Slicks 'n' slide
Still have that on my pc, and it even runs on DosBox!

And I second that NFS:PU was the best NFS ever

YES! Can you please send it (should be fitting in a E-Mail)?

My three favourite racing games (besides LfS, of course):

N.I.C.E.
Colin McRae Rallye 2.0 (driving whole rallyes with my brother and my father - those were the days )
Need for Speed: Road Challenge (afaik the last NfS where you had to look out not to damage your car)

Before you ask: Yes, I came to racing sims just recently...
1, Pitstop2 on C64 (1984).It was years ahead of it,s time. Tyre wear, fuel usage and pitstops.

2, stunt car racer on Amiga.I think almost everyone loved it.

3, GP series on Amiga and PC. I still believe It was game(s) that started race sims as we know them.
1. Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit

First racing game I ever got my hands on. I remember many a race in the Schigera...damn that car rocked! Was on a keyboard at the time though, being 9 I couldn't really afford a wheel or gamepad ;-)

2. Gran Turismo 2

First PS1 driving game I had played. I remember loading up Virtual GameStation JUST to play this thing...ran like a bag of sh*te too...but it was all good...really enjoyed driving the GT40 on GT2...was a blast!

3. Screamer Rally

This was fun too...a lot of stages to play on, it was a mighty shame that I couldn't get my Voodoo Banshee working with it but It still ran ok. Plenty of stages made it a keeper with me too
1) Live for Speed

Obviously

2) GeneRally

I occasionally still have a piss around in the track editor once in a while. This is a great game. I reccomend that you download it, delete all the tracks and replace them with a couple of

3) Le Mans 24 Hours (the one with the Dandy Warhols music)

Nice little racer with no decent physics but nice day/night and way of handling endurance races. Possibly could be used as an example on how to do day/night for S3.
3. NFS1, everything after has been crap
2. FlatOut 2, fun as hell in an unrealistic way
1. LFS, just can't beat it.
This one is really hard and I think my brain is overheating due to all the remembering.. I won't put these in any order, just naming 3 is difficult enough.

Indy 500 screenshot
This was my first car game, and propably one of the most played. I didn't get emotional orgasms or adrenaline rushes playing it, but the game was enjoyable and the old-schoolness means free bonus points on my rank.

Network Q RAC Rally screenshot
I didn't play this very much, because I didn't own it, but this was the first ever game that I played with a steering wheel. I remember all those nights @ my friend, when we just played and played into the night and my friends mum almost had to beat me off the wheel and carry outside every night before I realised what time it was.

Gran Turismo, GT2 screenshot
I hadn't played any sims before this, but I was old enough to realise that the driving model was way off that "Real Driving Simulator" it claimed on the box. The graphics and amount of cars were the features that kept me playing more and more.

The games that were close to top3, and a reason why I'm happy remembering them:

Colin McRae Rally 1 & 2 screenshot
The cockpit view and (totally unrealistic) slides. Sense of speed, and the "being there" -feeling.
4D Sports Driver, aka "Stunts" screenshot
The tracks. Different surfaces with different grip level and elevation changes were something awesome back then.
NASCAR 2003 screenshot
Didn't own the game but I borrowed my friend's copy to test single player and loved the physics and sounds.
GPL screenshot
I think this one is familiar enough here
Richard Burns Rally screenshot
I was really hooked into this, really awesome game. But when I started to learn the stages, I lost my interest and never got it back since. The point of rallying is to drive into the 'blind' spots trusting only your co-driver, and that's what the game can't offer anymore. Competing online against each other with less than 1 sec margins is like modern WRC rallies (like 5 short stages driven 3 times each) compared to 80's Group B rallies (thousands of km's to run, consistency owned fast lines).
Rally Trophy screenshot
Really loved the rwd rally cars, but the physics got oldish quite fast and now I randomly play just one stage (Sweden's 6th) with one car (the Lancia factory model).
Rally Sport download here
A Finnish DOS game, played from top view, there were sliding rwd cars and their behaviour was most realistic I ever saw on MS-DOS.. There was night mode etc, and the graphics (like dirt flying from tyres) formed from triangles
edit: just tested it and its still enjoyable today! try it, takes 5 mins of your time..
After I read through the posts, I started to think about the good ol' racing games I have encountered.

As a little kid I wasn't looking at the name, I was just saying : that game with those cars in it :P .We first had an Amiga (but then we didn't know what it was called but as it had two joystics wit big red buttons on it we just called it simply joystic =P [I was 5-6 years old ! ] ). I think I have encountered my fist racing game on that platform . ( can't remember :o )

After that we bought a 386 . It was a lovely piece of hardware (I can still remember playing Commander Keen on it ^^) and I played a F1 game on it (as said above, can't remember the name, but everybody who had a PC at that time had the game on his HDD ) . All I remember is the accolade logo appearing when starting the game :P . I was playing it occasionally,as it used to freeze all the time.

After that came a long brake from racing games, until one day I discovered a newer F1 like game (some kind of Grand Prix...can't remember the name and it is a shame cause I would really love to try it on my new PC. I know it is in the first part of the "Taxi" (Emilien plays it on his computer :P ) and also that i was using a setup with such a high nose setting, that the front of the car was bouncing on the long straights ^^ ) Loved the game. Really.

The third game to mention here is GeneRally. An old saying says that the best things are for free. This game is for free I used to play it with friends (3 in front of a 15' monitor ) and it was so damn fun. The game taught me to drive on the ideal lines on the track

So theese racing games ( oldies ) were the best to me. After theese came the NFS series, CMR series, and a bunch of other racing games ( Ignition , RoadRash () , carmageddon (1+2) and so on ... [damn my memory is so bad ] )

After discovering LFS i started to see the racing genre in a different way. I started to search for other sims to try out as many of them as i could, hoping there is something better than LFS. But after S2 , "Nothing else matters"

Thank You for reading this far and sorry for the spelling mistakes and typos !
1. LFS
2. NFS Porsche (everything after was crap)
3. There was no REALLY Good game to place here... :tilt
Quote :1, Pitstop2 on C64 (1984).It was years ahead of it,s time. Tyre wear, fuel usage and pitstops.

Yeah. I wanted to put this too. Much better than Pole Position and even miles ahead of the original Pitstop. I remember smashing into my friend to wear his tyres down. Going into the pits was very nice - taking each tyre off and filling up with gas. Great 2 player game.

Quote : GPL: Anyone not mentioning this should be taken out and shot, frankly.

Never played it, sorry.

(I've also come to sim-racing quite late...)

Heheh, I posted this one too, but I thought that screenshot looked strange. I didn't know there was a Network Q rally game in the early 90's, I was playing this game "Network Q RAC Rally Championship" in the late 90's, and it was 3D, heheh big difference I guess. Both were great fun though.

That Megane was great!

@Kid, Funny you liked SODA, I thought I was the only one that played that game, seriously
Here is what I consider my top 3.

Ayrton Senna Super Monaco 2 - Mega Drive
Grand Prix 2 - PC
Live for Speed - PC

That screenshot frokki posted looked weird to me also... frokki are you sure it's from the same game? Though the cockpit looks similar... maybe it's just taken with low gfx settings or something. .

I'm not 100% sure and it looks weird to me too. But incar view is the view I've been observing the digital tracks for last 15 years, and that's why I wanted to find a cockpit shot. Please let me know if you find a better one

From topic to another, deggis do you remember that Rally-Sport game?
