licensing cars, or not?
Many people use the arguement that LFS-devs need license-agreements with the manufacturer(s), when talking about adding new cars (real cars) to LFS.

I don't know if it's as easy as it seems, but couldn't this be settled like Genki did with Tokyo Extreme Racer (aka "Tokyo Highway Battle Xtreme Racer Zero" and "Shutokou Battle Zero")?

The game contained MANY cars, but no official brands.. I just thought this was a way of avoiding the expensive licenses.

Was this a correct assumption? And can this be done in LFS as well?

(sorry for any major errors in this post, it got kind of messy! )
yea thought bout that too....
best example - gran turimso.
they have porsche in game but the name isnt porsche its RUF.
well, i dont know if thats a tuning manufactor (but doubt it as i never heard of it).
arent just the names copyrighted?
in GT all the cars are licensed, atleast i think so..

and btw, RUF IS a tuning/car manufacturer!
darn, i was sure it isnt

Ruf is a Porsche tuning specialist IRL.

As I've said before, if we used very close if not exact copies of RL cars, we shouldn't have any issues if the names are left out. Not as if our developers can actually sell those cars for real.

We already have 2 cars that are almost carbon copies of RL Mitsubishi Starions, the XR and the XR GTT.
yes, i know.. why not continue down that road?
You can answer all the whining the forum would get then;
"why isnt it call a porsche?"

Theres no real need to have real vehicles imho. I'm perfectly happy with similar cars
just add more kinds of cars, and im happy
no need for real cars
I love the porsche/ferrari combination so real life cars aren't needed IMO.
GT5 has officially stated there will be Ferrari's though so.. never know

LFS and licensing? HA!

for all those german speakers.. or anyone interested in what an RUF is http://www.ruf-automobile.de/

Or you can just clicky the "English" version:
Linkage.
I prefer not real cars.

- This way, the devs can make cars like they want, for example if some class needs balancing, they can easily change one's specs.

- If we had more licensed cars, people would whine "Hey, that car doesn't behave irl"! (Even if it did)

- Licensing can be complicated, I'd rather see Scawen programming realtime weather and daytime changes than negotiating with ferrari about using red cars in the game

- Licensing would propably affect realization of the damage model, as we know, car manufacturers don't want to see their cars totally wrecked in games.

- May sound harsh, but real cars would attract the 'wrong' audience, resulting the whole community suffering.
^^agree

Just keep them unlicensed and it will stay ok
i don't care if the cars are licensed or it they have the real names.. all i want is some lookalikes that i can admire ingame!

and if the cars are lookalikes only, people can't complain about what acts correct or not compared to RL!

like a old e30 m3 racer, how fancy wouldn't that be? or as it could be named in LFS: XR M (s38b36 anyone?)
solution for RL cars:
make download page
make cars
let the cars be downloadable, so u don't sell them and then we can drive em
LFS is a download itself...

you only sell the allowing of driving with the downloaded cars
I would say just leave it as it is now, the developers can make near-real cars and do not have to worry about licenses. Like the RB4 is a Supra/FTO mix and nothing needed there. Saloons (4 and 2 dr) can easily be made without licensing, just use the lines of one car bonnet of another tail lights of another wings of something else and voila. You have a Lexades Masord (lexus+mercedes maserati+ford)
offtopic, but the rb4 is far more similar to a celica gt-four.. anyways..

i'm bored of the game, and i haven't really played it that much.. and to make it more interesting for me again, some new cars will have to be added.. and i'm sure i'm not alone on the matter!
Trust me, there will be more cars than you have time to drive them. You just have to be patient :yummy:
hehe! can't f'in wait!
for my opinion, licencing cars would double live for speed onlie racing simulator's reputation.wouldnt it ?
doubt it.. it would ruin them instead.. it costs!
it costs, definetly, but it sounds huge .

Reputation and user amounts of the game would grow, yeah, but the level of online races would drop dramatically.
I'd bet youre faster's alter ego...
Well he's right. It might not ruin them, they might make far more money with a big license behind them in fact. Chances are LFS itself would suffer as a result though (imho anyway).

I don't really care about real cars, I just wish they'd try to copy some more accurately, with more attention to details. I hope, for instance, that we get faithfully imitated single-model series', with realistic setup options/limits derived from the actual car, perhaps 1 control tyre instead of the seemingly obligatory multi-compound options. Little things. I don't worry too much about what the cars look like.
