Moderators [Question]
Only want to know, what do you need, or need to do, to be a Moderator of the forum?

Thanks

Thanks

You have to sell your soul to the devs, it is a very diffucult process that very few people get through alive.
I heard that the last person who tried ended up being liquidated and used as paint to mark soft tyre compounds in F1

I'd like to see another mod or two, but community nominated / voted

lol Thats cool

Yeah good idea man I'd like to see that too.

in order to be a mod, you must eliminate another mod you nominate in a wet T-shirt contest.

What are the chances of the community voting for an appropriate character
Usually the main thing a moderator has done is to not ask to be a moderator

Browse the forums regularly, always act mature and then you get a tap on the shoulder

I think we'd do ok. Open noms, have the existing mods cull anyone they deem inappropriate or who is disinterested, and put it to a vote.
It would be nice to have a say in such things, is all. There's one bloke in particular who imho would make a great mod; I guess that was why I suggested it.
Why would you (people in general) even want to be a mod of this forum? Sounds like an awful lot of extra work just for a small title from what I've seen so far.
Indeed. Forum Moderators are basically glorified Janitors (no offense to the LFS Mods; BTDT), cleaning up the vomit and trash strewn about by noobs, trolls, and members...

Me to good idea.

its occurs to me that a large portion of the net (and hey, perhaps the world) operates on 'kudos' and recognition; status, I s'pose.

Are the mods here not "celebrities" of sorts?

I suspect that, deep down, most of us are just dying to feel important and be remembered That, coupled with a genuine desire to be useful, is reason enough for a good few members, I reckon.

Existing mods doing a top job, may I add

hehe.. this all made me chuckle!

I think that's exactly it, in essence

We're (all the mods) enthusiastic about LFS, and to a great extent I think we think about things in the same, or a similar, way to the devs specifically about what should and shouldn't be in this forum.

100% correct! I think us mods see ourselves as forum members who've been given a mop and bucket, because we like things neat and tidy. It's not a chore at all, to us, because we're here a lot any way.. and I guess it gives us something to do
Quote from Goop :Existing mods doing a top job, may I add

Thank you! (from all of us, I'm quite sure!)

Edit: Faster than Bob!

I'll sign your t-shirts at a fiver a go.

Quote from Goop :Existing mods doing a top job, may I add

Thanks, we all like to know our work here is appreciated.

To the question, the initial moderators were picked from existing LFS section mods over at RSC, since then I think only myself and SamH have been give this, erm, honour. We were picked by discussions between the devs and the initial mods.

As to the role, there's not exactly much in the way of fun involved. Those of us that do it, do so because we're just community people and don't mind. There's little glamour in the role.

Edit: Slow
I think it goes something like this: if you ask for it, you're not the right guy.
To be honest I think the moderators here, and I include Scawen and Victor when they are in a moderating role in that, are just great. They have their limits, but at the same time aren't over-zealous or power hungry (generally).

uh, to clarify: "celebrities" within a niche online community..... sooo, I guess I'd have to be content with you signing my "e-shirt"
Fine, you owe me a fiver.

haha..... It's in the mail, honest.

Believe it or not i find it to be extremely forfilling. and feel better when i have sorted something out. Always looking to get into the action.

i just like to do all that back stage stuff ect. so there are alot of people i think that feel the same way.

Mop and Bucket is deffinatly a required tool for moderating .

can i be in the wet t-shirt contest please

Eh, unless you like to be a glorified babysitter and janitor and not get paid for it, I would pass. I am a "super" moderator on a vehicle specific forum, which means I control every section of the board plus I can ban / unban people.

Being a moderator means you are the object of hatred, gripes and usually you are never thanked for what you do. Oh, and the occasional threat via email or PM's. People who moderate have personalities which entail loyalty and a sense of duty.

you must work on a really bad bored.

if you treat the way you deal with bad threads / users ect. generally its not something that you get. Every now and then theres a large disagreement about something with the users of the forum(s) but the hatred bit i think is a bit too far from the truth. You just have to give things the right approach. thats all. rather than just "DONT DO THAT>. DO THIS OR ELSE" because thats bound to make hate .

of course there are some people still that just wont respect what you do as being the best for the community. But on the whole. i personally think that most people understand the reason for certain moderator actions without ever being told.

Also the fact of helping out other members (be it with a problem in their profile, ect) normally helps to keep them on your point of view .

One of the things you need to do is not to ask if you can be one I would assume
