Anyone Into Drag Racing ??
From the Many threads if read , nobody seems to like or name one of the most fun types of racing , dDrag Racing

yeah i know most people like f1 , karts n stuff but whats more fun then a 1/4 showdown ?? after all , unlike circut races its more about luck then anything else

thoughts anyone ?
If you are talking in real life, I kind of want to go to one, my dad and sister have been to some, but I never have, and a friend of mine is going to one this weekend while I'm up at Road Atlanta.
On LFS however I could not care any less about dragging, its not really all that fun because we do not have a fun car to drag in, such as a top fuel dragger or a funny car.

Get along to a top fuel event if only to hear the noise first hand... Recordings just don't do the physical nature of it any justice. Drag racing is largely about huge amounts of waiting for something to happen, but I was quite unprepared for how engaging that five or six seconds of racing can be.

For your first event I'd also recommend going to a venue where you can walk about the pits and paddock freely. Being able to stand just a few feet away as one those things starts up is an experience in itself.

Its nothing like it is on TV. When you go to watch a topfueler pass 4-5sec 1/4... its just unexplainable!!! ITs amazing.. i love drag racing as much as champcar and i go to all the main events in australia nsw =). Nitro champs is on next saturday and has top fuel, funny car, top doorslammer and top alcohol with alittle bit of street cars..
i was taling about people actually dragging , but you'd be surprised the most fun is when you get two cars ( your car and a friend who is a tough rival ) and beat em by like an inch

it also happens to be a good way to ake money ( betting money cars etc ) but you can also lose quiet a bit

as for lfs i dont think we need a tfd tffc or anything of there sort cause id be the only one who could tune em
yer i have to agree topfuelers would rattel ur bones christ even the 8/9sec runs form NA V8's u can feel the engine vibration through ur hole body
When its open, me and my dad take one of our cars down to santapod raceway and have some drags. I remember one time, my dad took his escort cosworth down there, and his mate ian came with us (he owns a skyline R33) and the specs were pretty similiar.

Escort cossy : 515-530hp, 0-60 in bout 3.5-4 seconds.
Skyline : 560-580hp, 0-60 in about 3.5-4 seconds.

We was expecting the skyline to win, so they both pulled up and then the lights go to green and they both shot off. The cossy luanched VERY hard and was leading for a couple of seconds. Then, the skyline got ahead. Then just a short distance away from the line, the skyline blew something (i believe it was one of the turbos but im not sure) and then the skyline just backed off majorly, so my dad won.

Tbh though, im pretty sure the skyline would of one due to more power and plus, we was running on semi slicks and he was running on slicks, lol.

lol my dads bmw m5 beat a bently continental gt by atleast 10 lenghts there last year
Drag racing can be fun =) I have done it a bit in my car beating out a Roush Stage 2 Mustang and a C5 Corvette (don't ask me how I shouldn't have had a chance =)

Because they use a substance called VHT which is basically like liquid rubber the first part of the track is very sticky and is nothing like trying to launch a car on the road. Priniples are the same but the actual grip available is phenominol. For me the first 60 feet on street tires were done in 2.1 seconds alone.

I think thats the most fun drag racing... trying to get the car to launch as hard and as fast as you can without bogging the engine down, with a factory vehicle that is. There is so much traction available with just street tires it's crazy =)
i like playing it on this game its fun dont relly like it in real life tho duno why ? lol
i think its more fun in places where theres nobody round , afdterall , when racing on a track you need to burn out your tires for traction ( which putds alot of wear on your engine ) for me ill jusat wait till im 17 then get a old diahatsu , stick a nice engine in it and beat everything
we've got a drag racing team, Hornet Racing. we're taking a year off right now because of funding, and we're thinking of stepping up a class to go faster.
A friend of mine has a 2001 chevy cavalier, with a 3.3 liter v6! And a garrett t3/t4 turbo @14psi! The thing is crazy! He dont know how much power it makes, but he estimates 350+. He loves to pull up to people with the non-GT mustangs, with the 3.8 liter V6, and destroy them. The car looks almost stock, except for the 3-inch pipe that sticks out under the drivers door. Conects directly to header, no muffler. You can hear it from a mile away when he floors it.

lol sounds like the lotus carlton my bro had a while ago ( basicly the same car just differant badge )

but i have to say im sick to death of american cars there just too slow like japan ese cars ( hence why that Have to go sideways )

bu tthen again it do's explain why european cars are the fastest in the world

What do you mean that American cars are slow? I would agree that alot of the plain jane ones are nothing to write home about but the sport versions of most of the cars compaire to the sporty ones here in the UK. The worlds fastest factory FWD comes from the states. The Viper won the 24hours Lemans GT1 class from 1996 to 2001 I think a saleen was in the mix, which is also made in the States then the Vette has won 5 times in the last 6 years of the race. In Gt1's you see the Ferrari's and Aston Martins.

Factory wise there is nothing really different between a ferrari or a vette in performance, with this years Viper the Viper is up there once again aswell.

I am not arguing persay, just giving you information that might hopefully kill the stigma that Americans make slow cars =)

If your talking about cars from the 80's then I would definatly agree with you, but the new cars coming out onto the market today in the states are engineered no differently than the ones in the European and Japaneese markets.

If your talking about standard daily driver cars that are built purely for economy and nothing around performance I wouldn't really know... there is nothing really worth compairing to or about.
put it like this , dont compare dodge tothem crappy european @ super cars @ , the viper may be good tho it would get beat but a bmw m5

the best production rwds are bmw , tho they might be slightly eavy i think compared to vette dodge ford saleen , plymouth buick etc , they just own em atfer all

the bmw m1 from the great 70's beat most everything ( only beaten by jaguar or austin martin )

also if you gonna compare cars , the dodge viper srt10 might be fair against an old diablo , maybe murcialago
I went to watch FIA drag racing at santa pod last year. Top fules FTW!
Quote from theirishnoob :the viper may be good tho it would get beat but a bmw m5

I hope you are kidding.. right?
M5 weighs 630 lbs. (285 kg.) more, and has 10 less (100 less than the '08 Viper) horsepower than the same year Viper, and the M5 is limited to 150 mph, while the Viper can achieve over 200 mph.
Not to mention there is no roadster version of the M5 as there is the Viper .
American cars > european cars
All those little euro tin can jokes, that can go around a turn like there is no tomorrow, but cant overtake a kid on a bicycle when it gets on a straight. In a european car, your too afraid to to run them hard, because the clutch will probably cost more to replace then the american car your getting passed by!
You buy a european car to be seen, you buy an american car to be heard!

My friends cavalier is faster then the lambo!
@ xcnuse: when you press the m button your top speed go's from 151 to 210 mph which has been already done in the German countryside by bmws m sport group

@stevewhite: if you gonna start all this crap saying euro cars are crap , don't bother , European cars kinda like a combination of jap and u.s performance with rock solid reliability

also id say that the cavy that beat that lambo had heavy mods cause as we all know , americans cant corner too good ( mainly when driving buicks :P )
Buicks? Buicks are for old people. The are big cars, loaded with options, and have a lower price tag. You can get supercharged regals, they are a blast! Im just saying taht american cars can go faster in a straight line, i know euro cars are fast in corners. In order to get a decent performing european car, you have to dish out the big bucks. That cavalier might have 10,000 dollars put into it. Making it a 30,000 dollar car that can go faster then a 300,000 dollar car! It wont be able to go around the turns as fast, but who cares! Imagine seeing a cavalier blowing past a lamborgini on the highway. European cars are too expensive, and dont offer the kind of performance you get out of an american car dollar per dollar.

ps heres a buick for ya
I knew from the beginning of you posting about buicks you'd find a video of a GNX.

Those were (are I should say) cool cars. Fast too.

Steve has the point, and you really and honestly can't fight that point.
steve , my brother had a Peugeot 205 gti 12v , it had 4wd a short wheel base and on a 5 g budget you can ( from moving at 50 mph ) overtake any "super car" now tell me thats not racing on a budget
Quote from theirishnoob :lol sounds like the lotus carlton my bro had a while ago ( basicly the same car just differant badge )

Im sorry, but this made me laugh. Steve talks about his freinds chevy cavalier (nice car may i add) and you say that the lotus cartlon is the same car? bwahahah. Im sorry but that just shows how much you know about cars (nothing.....)

http://www.channel4.com/4car/m ... auxhall-lotus-carlton.jpg < this is a lotus cartlon, a rare, expensive, fast super saloon. This car can reach close to 180mph, has over 400hp, is a VERY nice looking car and generally, is an exquisite, one of a kind car.

http://www.avonhill.com/thumbn ... 3_Chevrolet_Cavalier.jpeg <THIS is a 1993 chevy cavalier. this is the shape that was around while the lotus cartlon was in production. This is'nt a fast car, not at all. Its not exactly great looking and you see them EVERYWHERE (in the U.S anyway)
Generally, this is a cheap, run about car. Good for familys.

Now, explain to me why the hell you think a chevy cavalier and a lotus cartlon are the same cars? The only things i can see they have in common is that they have four wheels and an engine....

I just thought it was funny that you thought they were the same cars....

The SRT10 may be a rather blunt instrument with a brutal 8 litre pushrod engine but with independent suspension and an LSD it's a long way from the old leaf sprung solid rear axle setup and being considerably lighter than an M5 I suspect it could keep up round a track. Also note this is a drag racing discussion and the Viper is 0.2 secs faster in the 1/4 mile dash than the M5 (12.2 vs 12.4 secs).

Quote :

I'm afraid that statement has no truth behind it whatsoever the M1 is a very nice car but it's not light and considerably less powerful than modern sportscars, a Focus RS is only a tenth of a second slower in the dash to 60 (6.2/3) and I would expect it to be faster than the M1 round a track.

I kind of get the feeling that there's a tiny bit of bullshit coming out your mouth here:

1) There's never been a 4WD 205, please don't even start trying to tell me your brother successfully did a bespoke conversion within that budget. So take your pick out of FWD or RWD (I'll give you a hint you don't have the RWD rally special either).

2) 12 valves? - so you've got a 2 valve per cylinder 6 cylinder engine? or a 4 valve per cylinder 3 cylinder engine or a 3 valve per cylinder 4 cylinder engine? Or maybe it had a 12 volt battery?

If you're going to bullshit at least make it seem at least slightly believable.
