How to setup this rig?
My system:

Athlon XP 2000+ (1666 Mhz)
2x 512 ddr pc 3200(dual channel)
PoV 6600gt (latest drivers)
GA-7N400S-L
(waiting for my dfp)

When I'm in a populated field I get 15-20 fps. Whem I'm alone on the track it's only 30-35.

Turning on/off AA or changing resolution doesn't seem to affect fps.

Thanks in advance.
its the cpu, i have the same prob for a couple of days since they r moving servers or so, normal fps 75-80
when crowded, like 32 racers 25 fps
i'm buying myself a new sweet rig
for your problem, if its a rather old pc, renew the cooling pasta(could do alot of help)
check the temperature...
update drivers,
and when playing lfs, turn of msn and all the background stuff you dont need

pasta ay, ill have to try that some time

All would be fine. That graphic card can output in LFS over 200FPS when paired with some good CPU.

As said above your CPU is holding you back a lot:-(
Have you tried/ever overclocked a processor before? It isn't hard and is pretty safe as long as you watch your temperatures and your Vcore.

Here is a guide if you want to read up on it and consider your options. It is a great way to increase performance without paying anything.

This cpu should be fine for at least 40 fps…

I had an 3000+ athlon xp (2000mhz) and even in full grid I was always above 50fps and when I was alone, 100+ fps…

Are you sure that there is no other application using cpu on the background?
See on task manager > processes, if there is something that uses a noticeable amount of resources, cpu or ram…
If you do not see something wrong try setting the lfs.exe at hi priority when running.

I do not think that the o/c will save him… its clearly shown from the single player performance that the system is not working properly…

First of all, thank you for your replays.

After playing with nvidia settings, and using need for speed profile, fps raised up to 50-60 when I'm alone on the track. The problem is when there are more cars (AI): Starting grid 20 fps and then 30-40.

What about the best settings for the 6600gt card(AA,AF,...)?

When playing the gpu temperature is about 85ºC and cpu 70ºC.

I think I'll have to get a new cpu (athlon XP 3200).
Nice.
For the graphic card is optimal for LFS 4xAA and 8xAF maybe even 16AF.
Just check how the changes affect LFS performance.

!

Ok, your CPU is WAY to high and so is your graphics card is running so hot their slowign themselves down just to try to survive! A new CPU is unnecesary, just give the inside of your case a clean and see if it helps. Also, if that doesn't, try getting some Arctic Silver 5 thermal paste and putting that on.

Either way its running WAY to hot - Case issue?
Hi Jakg,

85 is pretty normal for 6600GT especialy with the AGP chip bridge near the GPU which can go hot a lot as well. They can work pretty well up to 95 degree without slowdown usually.

Still cleaning the cases, coolers and applying AS on the CPU would help to not stress the components so much.

Really? my 6600GT (PCI-e admitedly) loaded hot (like 75° hot), but i never realised they went that hot!
Yer they can go stupidly hot. I whacked a zalman cu-700 on my old one though and I got ambient temp at idle, below 50 load IIRC.
After some cleaning and putting some pasta on the gpu the miracle has been made!

The gpu temperature doesn't get more than 70º and now I can get 80-90 fps.

I'm just waiting for a dfp to knock my door and if it works fine I'll buy S2.

Thankyou guys for your wonderful help.
congratz!!!
