Hey guys, I'm thinking of buying a new gaming notebook, and I'm not sure which would fit me and the things I do. I'm looking for one that can handle LFS with no problem, and can store all my music/photos with room to spare. I read through a lot of websites but I don't know which would run LFS the best, so why not ask the place that actually know. I was looking at Alienware products, but they seem expensive, and I'm not sure If it would suit me.

So if someone could please help, it would be greatly appreciate it!

If you're looking for a laptop that will run LFS the "best" but Alienwares are too expensive, you have to either, deal with lower FPS or fork out the extra cash.

Buy a PC.

You can get high end "gaming" laptops from many brands, HP, Dell, Toshiba, Sony, to name a few all do them. Shop around and see what you can find. Personally I play LFS on my laptop fine and it is far from gaming quality, it is aimed at the business man, but the integrated graphics it has plays LFS nicely at 1024x768.

customised a Hp for my father and it runs games beautifully and it was cheap!!!! muhahahhahaha

EDIT: Cheap in my case = 1/5 the price of the outdated desktop pc which is s**t

voted for alienware though

These (Dell XPSTM M1710) sound pretty good for the current price- in AUS dollars.

Compare with the Alienware stuff and you'll probably find that the Dell's are much cheaper.

The next model up (Dell XPSTM M2010) on the other hand seems quite overpriced, considering it looks very similar to the M1710 in specs, only with a bigger monitor (but lower res) and slightly better video card. Not very portable either.

Dell own Alienware, so Alienware is now a (naff) brand name.

Seriously, why get a "gaming laptop"? they're slow and REDICULOUSLY expensive for what they are! I'd get a cheap ultra-portable and a desktop, why can't you?

Because it's the most sensible thing, as the price/performance ratio is really that bad... And if the other one has too much money to spend, I am always open for donations...

For the price of a "gaming laptop" you can get a nice portable laptop and a kickass PC, i'm just asking if it HAS to be a laptop to game on.

One wants a laptop for a reason, if they have the money to spend let them, it is their money. If all you do is say "buy a PC" you're not helping.

I have a gaming PC, but I still have a laptop which I can play games on because I can only use my PC if it is plugged into a wall.

I'm actually asking myself that same question. Part of the reason is next year when I go back to school my GF and I will be most likely be sharing a very small 1 bd apartment. We'll both need computers, and having laptops will cut down on much needed space. Also, I'll be doing Multimedia, so a portable laptop will come in handy for school reasons as well- it's gotta be a decent one because of the nature of the stuff we'll be doing there. Another factor is we'll likely be travelling from Aus to Turkey a bit over the next few years, and since I've already dragged my huge PC over here once, I'm not looking forward to doing that again any time soon...

So, sure.. for the same money I could get a fantastic desktop PC, but there are actually attractive reasons for looking into laptops as well, although I'm not totally convinced yet.

I wouldn't buy a branded laptop, and I certainly wouldn't get an Alienware machine unless I wanted to just throw my money away.

They might have nice cases and a shiny website, but I spend more time actually using my computer than looking at it. I'd rather have the same spec for half the price with a boring grey case. Maybe that's just me

Can't recommend any Stateside retailers though, I use Scan for all of my computer needs (except RAM).

Alienware used to be just that, cheap computers tweaked to hell with a standard case, the only changes being an AW sticker thrown on the side. Then they turned into a brand name and now it is all about the looks. The OS that comes with AW computers is filled with GUI eye candy.

Sorry I can't tell you what it is, because I don't remember.... A friend of mine at work who races LFS got a new work laptop. He was allowed to pick it himself rather than the IT department because it was for CAD and a coordinate measuring arm, so he wanted something more than the email box that IT gives you.

I get a phone call VERY shortly after he recieved his laptop. I hear him giggle, "You've gotta come over here and see this..." In the mean time, I have to say, both of us were use to onboard gfx running at 1024x768 and lowish framerates (35-45ish) racing LFS at home. I get over in his office and he has LFS running with full AI grid, an astronomical resolution on the 24 inch widescreen, and full AA/AF and it's running at 180-200 FPS!

IIRC, he (work) only paid around $3000 for it. This is a Dell as that is all we get at work (we supply packaging material for them, they give us special rates on computers which aren't all that special to be honest.) So, you can get a great laptop for "not a lot of money" if you think spending $3000 on a computer is "not a lot of money". Personally, my PC at home was only $500 and I wouldn't pay much more for a PC myself.

Crucial. They guarantee compatibility if you use their online checking tool. I used to have a lot of incompatibility issues with RAM so I decided I'd rather pay slightly more for the guarantee of it working And free delivery in the UK is just a bonus.

I know the whole deal with PC vs notebook...

Best gaming laptop It is not also that expensive, but haven't found one from europe and there is no point ordering from US because of all taxes etc.

Rather good option if you are in europe, not too expensive and still has good performance, in many cases SLI does not offer much of all improvement either so in practise it is not so far behind of Sager as you could think of.

And those who thinks there is no point getting gaming laptop, tell me how I should carry desktop 200 days in a year with me? I spend around that much time on hotels, week on one place and then to next place, visiting home at weekends.

This will be my next laptop I think.

Those new macbooks run windows too if I'm not mistaken? Do you mean prices in there or in europe? Here we have some extra in price and if I try to buy one gaming laptop in Finland, it does cost around 4000 euros, but there is not single one as powerful.

Some macbook with core 2 duo 2.4Ghz 4GB ram and 160GB HDD is 3429 euros, but no idea what is GFX card in that, over 1000 euros more than laptop from germany and I have seen Sager at sale for 2400 US$ :P

8700M Go seem to be fastest laptop gfx card at the moment, SLI does not help much of anything, only some certain games so it is mostly waste of money, so there is not much use of getting even fastest CPU as games don't use it because they are waiting gfx card, (maybe rigs of rods does and perhaps LFS).

Rig Of rods is great for CPU testing, because it's multi-threaded/multi-core.

In Canadian $, the Macbook Pro is much cheaper than the Sager laptop, which is why I suggested it. I guess Apple has messed up prices in Europe (over-priced). Also, I don't really like the form-factor of that Sager laptop, it has that whole bloated bottom that I think looks gross.

Honestly, I've had less problems running Windows on my Mac, then running Windows on any other computer. I guess laptops are different, because most of it is pre-installed, but most desktops I have (because I lose disks easily), is more trouble to find drivers, where installing Windows on Mac is simply inserting the CD into the drive, and autorun starts the Setup, and a restart later, everything works.
