i dont know if a visit in a site made this (no not such sites u may think bout) or whatever, but im constantly getting attacked by "something".
watch the screenie, it doesnt stop...
i have no clue how to get rid of it.
hmm thats weird most hacks just shut your pc after wiping it :S , if you got a log of that " attack " have a close look at it and you might be able to find which process on your pc is running it , if not , then id be keeping a keen eye on my important folders
Nothing to worry about imo. Infected computers on the net do this all the time (trying to find other vulnerable computers) and DCOM exploits are popular. The message you get is nothing but a confirmation that your anti vir / firewall is doing its job and blocked the attack (I assume at least, since if it can detect it, it should be able to block it too ).
If this message is spamming you though, it'd be nice if avast would have an option to suppress messages that you've seen and would be seeing again soon.
well, it seems its more serious than just the notice message popups (which yes, can be hidden).
i can connect to the internet, however after 2-3 minutes my connection will drop and im unable to reconnect (only way to reconnect is to reboot the system).
so, im pretty fked right now. nice.
ive already did a virus scan without any results.
atm im under linux where everything seems to work fine (which shows that its not a isp problem. winblows...).
im open for any ideas... i prefer linux...but 75% of the games i play are direct x and with my system they do emulate rather bad under linux (LFS is fine tho).
Download Kaspersky
Turn off System Restore
Uninstall Avast
Install Kaspersky
Scan and clean
If problem still persists, scan with Ad-aware, Spybot and the like
When clean, enable System Restore and run Windows Update
Uninstall Kaspersky and install Avast
wont uninstall avast...best antivir/firewall i ever had.
had kaspersky, caused a lot problems with games, did freeze mutiple times when trying to do a system scan so i was never able to complete a scan.
thats a no-go.
I recomend uninstalling Avast for NOW, because the instalation may have became faulty, happened to my copy of Ad-Aware when I got a nice virus a few years back, you can install a FRESH copy after the mess is sorted out.

No idea, but ... have you tried a "Timer Boot-Zeit Prüfung" yet (found in Avast > Menu > Zeitsteuerung für Boot-Zeit Prüfung)...? It'll check your system before the OS is loaded.
Well, Kaspersky has one of the best detection rates, and I merely suggested you temporarily installed it. I don't use it permanently myself cause I feel it's a little bloated, but that doesn't take away the fact that it's very good at detecting threats. So I sometimes use it purely to clean computers, then uninstall it and usually install AVG free.
Sorry to hear you had problems with Kaspersky, but if you want an antivirus you should really get one who does a better job than Avast. According to suspectfile.com (an italian site dedicated to security and rootkit eradication) Avast comes in the last places, being surpassed even by Avira Antivir. If you want an additional online scan try housecall.trendmicro.com, it's not perfect but does a better job than Avast.
Otherwise you have some different options, one being a manual identification and removal (the one I prefer), with the same old apps every technician interested in malware removal uses: HiJackThis, Autoruns, Process Explorer, GMER, RKUnhooker, The Avenger by Swandog.
The downside is that you must have at least a hint of the inner working of NT based operating system to use those programs because they tell you everything (including all lawful entries) about running processes, hidden processes, hidden files and processes run at boot time. You have complete control, but you're on your own.
What arco suggested is correct: having another antivirus and some antispywares/antimalwares doing additional jobs is not a bad idea, it's almost mandatory in automated removals.
but even if i go and install kaspersky for a try, i need a source where i can download an up to date install as i will be unable to update it cuz of the 2 min connection loss.
I think it's maybe possible to run the update in safe mode, if you don't loose connection there. If that doesn't work, I think the version on the website was released just a few days ago, so it should be pretty much up-to-date.
You might also try WinSockXPFix, to see if that can cure the connection problems.
If you have a router and it has an option for 'ping blocking' (most do), then enable it.
A lot of attacks are preceded by the attackers sending out a ping to a range of addresses and they then target the ones they get a response from. When I enabled ping blocking on my router a few years back, the number of hits on the firewall dropped from 1 every 10-15 mins, to 1 a month at most.
nah dont have a router...
maybe i get one from a friend some day but i wouldnt bet on it...
and i really dont want to install an additional firewall as my system is already heavily underpowered for todays games.
IMO Антивирус Касперского (Kaspersky) is much better than avast, i had both and I can say that avast can miss a lot of trojans and worms, whoch it did some time ago when i had my comp infected, then I tried to scan with Kaspersky and voila! There were 125 infected files missed by avast.
BTW new versions of Kaspersky (v6 and v7) are a LOT faster and more bug-free than the older (v5)
uninstalled avast, installed and updated kaspersky, did a 3 hour scan, which found 2 things.
however, the problem remains.
have been on for a few mins, then suddenly my desktop style changed to win 98 style for 1-2 secs, then back to xp and im unable to reconnect unless i reboot.
You should go with a combo of NOD32, MRU-Blaster, AVG, and CCleaner. Had a problem with a lot of trojans today, ran the 4 programs and I'm now virus and spy/adware free
Yeah, let as many antivirus/antispyware programs as possible do a scan. There's unfortunately not a single program yet that can catch everything, so spread the chanches by running as many as possible. Also feel free to attach an output log from Hijackthis here.
I'm linking to some of the better free antispyware programs.
