skin download doesnt work

Yugo - there is no need to shout and be cross.

It's is not OUR fault we cannot sort out your deranged and poorly set-up computer. Very few, if any, people have this 'bug', so I expect it's something at your end.

Phoning Microsoft just shows how little you know about computing (as if they'd know), so getting cross when people TRY to help isn't gone win you many favours.

Victor was suggesting that you tried something that YOU HADN'T MADE OBVIOUS YOU HAD TRIED. When I read Victors post I read a few posts above (to see what you had said) and thought 'yeah, it'd help if he (you) tried everything rather than skipping advice.

You have no one to blame but yourself.
So you tried unziping fresh LFS(not from a CD) to a fresh NTFS partition?
It really is frustrating..
And this was the post I made after testing it with that other guy: http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?p=30982#post30982

Sounds similar to me, just please get a hold of the guy.... he fixed it somehow, might want to see what worked....

Any options given to try to fix this will help.
Quote from TagForce :Let me get this straight...

So... LFS says it's downloading the skins... And says its downloading some of those more than once in a loop...
While it is downloading those skins you don't see any of the downloaded skins, but when you disco and reconnect to the server, you see the previously downloaded ones, but not the ones it hasn't finished downloading yet?

If so... I've had that problem once... There's a list of skins it's downloading in the player options (I think)... See which skins are on there, and try to stop them downloading (you can cancel the downloads by clicking them or something, can't really remember... When you've done that, turn automatic skin downloading to off, and connect to the same server again... Then disconnect, turn automatic skin downloading back on, reconnect, and for some strange reason, from that moment forth, it would simply download all the available skins for me. There may be a small bug in the automatic download functions, causing the skins to become corrupted, or the wrong message received when downloads finish. Most common for me were helmet skins not downloading correctly.

Thank you! I am getting somewhere now!

The moment i turn off auto downloading, and then reconect to the same server it shows all the skins, ALL OF THEM! but, the moment i disconect, go to options and turn the automatic skin download back on, it does it again, doesnt show skins, except few. Its like he is choosing which one!

Tried something,....... turned on automatic download option when the skins we on the vechicles. After i done that, what i saw was how skins disapear from the cars, they just became WHITE again (not all). There were three cars on the track that had the same skin (this is wierd) and one of three of them had the skin on (when i turned the Automatic option on), the two didnt, just disapeared. I wish i had fraps on so i could film it, to let you know that i aint imagining things illepall

.

Please READ, I did not phone microsoft because of LFS!

Mierly because the folder didnt want to turn off its "write protection", which some of the guys thought was the problem!
Quote from yoyo45orsomething :I asume its not the problem, because i already tried it! Damn it! I even phoned f**king microsoft to see if there is a solution! So dont go and tell me i havent done anything people said in here! IF you dont want to help its ok, just dont say i havent done anything, since this sh*t has been bothiring me the whole day!

I did READ. You didn't say that in your post. I can't read minds.

As you have a new partition and a clean system, you no longer have this read-only folder problem then?

Sounds to me like one of the following:

Trying to play LFS off a CD
Folder is read-only (with LFS, data, skins, skins_x, a combination or all of them)
Some weird user privaledges are in force
The computer is messed up beyond recognition
Software is blocking you from downloading the data somehow

Edit: in responce to your PM and your subsequent post, no it won't happen to me. I can assure you of that. And no, I won't need a magic ball, and yes I was born smart (ish).
This can happen to anyone, maybe your next tristan!?!?!?

What you gonna do? Turn on your magic ball for help?

I dont want to argue and I aint no "super brain" with PCs, thats why i need some help here to solve this.

The nearest that i have come to solving this was from TagForces sugestion, like i said in my previos post.
"Originaly posted by yoyo45orsomething"?

You really need to grow up.
Tristan, how are u so sure it won't happen to you??
I don't know how LFS world works like, but maybe it remembers what skins you had by username, and now that you no longer have them it got confused and this BUG happens.
Maybe if LFS world works like this, the solution is to erase all info on Yugo45 previously downloaded skins, so he starts downloading them like he is a new user, you know, like he never had those skins??
you can all forget about lfsworld being the problem, because lfs world has exactly null to do with the _actual downloading_ of skins. The only relation is that LFS will download skins from the website called LFS World, but there no interactivity whatsoever.

I don't see why you guys think so far off topic - yugo had no problems, then he changed something about his computer and all of a sudden he had problems that noone else has. Gee where would the problem be... LFS WORLD?

Now, you can call this post sarcastic, rude, whatever you want yugo, but if you, again, decline advise other people give you, then I really don't feel like helping you.
I still didn't see you reply that you tried boris's advice, to start from scratch, with a clean hd and then download S2 again from our website and install that version.
It's quite likely that version won't have any problems and then we could take things from there, copying stuff over from your backed up cd, piece by piece, to see if this new problem of yours comes up again and if it would, it would be easier to pint point the problem this way. But now, I can't help you because you don't follow the advice given to you.

Good luck.

Ok let me start from scratch.

First of all, I did some changes, but only to my hard drive. The reason was that it didnt work properly (mechanical error) and I knew that "Medion" was sending me a new one, so I experimented a little bit.

Yesterday about noon, a technition brought me the new hard drive. Xp, drivers, were already installed, so basicly it was like the day i bought the PC (this i mentioned in the thread). Now, the only thing i have changed since then was the graphic driver (omega), nothing else. I mean, its brand new, so do I need to format a new installed HDD?

I will say this again. REally, I have tried every single sugestion in here that was posted by other members. I am also thankfull for comments, hints, etc.

Where did I say that I decline help? That i think its not a good idea to try anything out (only the sugestion to format a newly installed HDD by profesionals thats not even 24h in use)?

Just watch the clip, you will see what I am on about.
Just a simple list of questions, not trying to be witty or have a go at you. Some questions sound stupid but could you answer these so people know exactly what have you done with these? Thank you.

You have enough empty space on HD?
You have installed your windows from legit and non-edited CD (haven't made your own install cd)?
You are not running LFS inside the *.zip - you have unzipped the folder to some place on your HD?
You haven't edited your windows' settings without being sure what they do?
You have re-downloaded LFS from liveforspeed.net (the whole package, not just update file...) and it doesn't change anything?
Your firewall has allowed LFS to edit folders/files/use net connection/use DLLs it needs, etc.?
How much memory does LFs use for graphics? To check this go to the graphics settings, look at the text right from the menus. Compare this to your graphics card memory.
Have you updated your graphics drivers and they are set up ok, without conflicts?

And people, take it easy, shouting or arguing won't solve this

Answers:

1. 200GB S-ATA Seagate "Baracuda" ---> free space 165GB atm
2. Windows installed by Medion company, with all the drivers. Its their brand PC with legit Windows
3. LFS inst running from .zip folder
4. Windows setting were not touched
5. downladed full version from ocrana racing site with new Q patch, still same simptoms
6. Dont have a firewall
7. Also no problem their
8. Uptaded grahic driver (omega 2.6.83) Tested it with Call of Duty 2 and BF2. No sings of problems (also with LFS).

Thats your problem - you have to extract the zip file to a folder.
inst -> isnt -> is not
whilst your English is better than my Serbian, it's quite hard to understand exactly what you mean. Sorry about that.
Just a quickie. Does the LFS (windows more probably) hide the .jpg files in the skins_x folder? I mean are they "hidden"?

Did you remove the default skins too? Not sure but LFS may dislike that

Are you sure that you aren't running any windows-integrated firewalls or other security progs?

I'm running out of options...

Hide the .jpg files, or just the extensions?
This is getting weirder and weirder, but it COULD be that "hide extensions for known file types" is acting up. Uncheck that in "Folder options".

The weird part is that for some reason, the amount of skins LFS seems able to display changes when you use automatic skin downloading. I don't know how LFS handles changing that option, but it would seem to me that skins turning white has nothing to do with files on the harddrive at all UNLESS they are all reloaded when that option changes.

I remember a time when there were a lot of people complaining about skins not downloading... Maybe search RSC forums for "skins won't download" or "skin download loop" or something... It may turn up something useful...

@ Tweak: Actually it sounds as though the problem you are describing is the mirror image of this one... With you, this guy's skin wouldn't load on your PC, while here your skin won't load on his PC.
No, the hidden option is not turned on. The default skins are in the skins folder and i did not delete them. Positivly 100% i dont have a firewall of any kind, no router, no norton, nothing..... yet.

What about changing the .cfg files? Forcing downloads in another folder, say "skins_y" for example. Its like it doesnt let the skins appear.

Just a reminder, the only way i can see them is by going in a server, waiting for the download to end(about 30secs.), turning "download" option off, disconecting, then going back in the same server with the "download" option on OFF. Just like Tagforce described (in which i followed his instructions to the end, but didnt work for me, only works until this point).
I just found part of the original conversation about a looping problem like this on here...

Yugo, bud, can you do me a favor and try something for me?

You said you'd removed all the skins from the skin_x folder, right?
I'm assuming you tried connecting to the servers after that and start all fresh with no skins, so it would download ALL of them... (if not, hold on a bit, want you to try the next first)...

Try deleting ALL the HEL skins (helmets) from the skins_x folder. Turns out for someone that was the problem (I've tried millions of things, and found it worked again all of a sudden, so that may actually turn out to be what did it for me eventually). After you've done this, connect as usual and auto download the skins... See what happens, and report back.

If that doesn't work... Do me another favor (at least we're working on your problem now)... Delete everything from the skins_x folder (including hidden files, and stuff like that), and delete all skins except the default ones from your skins folder as well... I want everything to be clean so we can see what happens... Next, make a screenshot of when you join a server.
All white skins... And make one where you have the MISC options menu open (it shows the list of skins it downloads...)... When it's done downloading and starts looping (if ever), make another screenshot, just so we get to see the list of remaining skins. Then disconnect from the server, turn off auto downloading, and reconnect (you should see the skins, right?)

Screenshot of the skins, then turn autodownload on again, and make another screenshot of the disappearing skin...

I want to see what it is exactly that's happening... I also would like to know if the skins that disappear reappear in the MISC options window, so we can see if it redownloads them or leaves them alone.
Ok, on it right now.

Most welcome, m8

Victor, Scawen...
Seriously, it's not a BIG problem, but there seems to be a bug with the auto helmet skins download... Would you mind looking into this when you have a chance? My guess is it only happens when one or more of the helmet skins is corrupted on the local drive... I have NO clue how it could still happen when the entire skin_x folder is empty, but still that seems to be the case... It happened to me back in October, and it happened to other people as well... And Yugo wasn't entirely going crazy... I only remembered the helmet part because I looked for my own original post on this subject and someone mentioned helmets.

What conditions need to be met for a skin NOT to download? Must be on local drive, must have a timestamp newer or equal to the one on the server, and must have matching CRC?
