I went to MPH07 with Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May...I didn't actually "go with them" I meant it was presented by them. It was good and all that, but amongst their many adverts, there was one for a car insurence company called "Perfomance Direct" They boasted great price (like them all, I have never heard a company boast of high prices :shrug but they specialise in Performance Car and all other car catagories.

When I past my test, as I'm sure you know, I will be driving a BMW 316i SE. My cheapest quote is £1400, but these guys seemed convincing. I tryed out their online quote system and it gave me a quote of...

So, it got me thinking..Whats the craziest insurence quote you've had?

How often do you have to pay? Every 6 months?

Some/most companies will give you a stupid quote simply because they don't want the risk, a new male driver in a beemer is a recipe for disaster according to insurance companies.

Personally, anyone paying anywhere near £1K for insurance needs their head read, get a smaller car for a few years untill your NCB is up, then get something better.

Stupidest quote I got was for about £4K on a ZX9R when I first past my test, needless to say, I didnt get a ZX9R

Any 17yr old male that has just passed and drives the smallest engined car possible is still looking at £1k insurance for the first year. There's no way around it, doesn't matter what car you drive.

Personally I chose to drive a bigger engined car as a named driver which meant I didn't get any NCB, but I could drive a semi-legit car whilst everyone else was bumbling around in (and crashing) 1 litre saxos etc. Do I regret it? Not one bit. I'm now not driving a car (apart from holidays) for 4 years or so at uni, so I continue to pay about £300 a year for insurance, and when I need my own insurance I'll be over 23 or so, so the premiums will be lower anyway.

Jeremy Clarkson had a quote of £25,000 a year to insure a Ford Escort Cosworth in the Mid 90s! That was more than the car was worth!!!

My mate pays £1600 and he drives a 1.1 Mk3 Fiesta.

Another friend of mine, female if it makes any difference is paying £1750 on 1.0 1989 Metro.

Insurence is crazy! I guess because they have had looooooooooooads of claims from people on Fiesta's and Metros than is big BMW's.

Its all to do with stats.

That much? I'm insured fully comp in a 1.2 corsa for £700 a year but this is as a named driver, on my own it was about £900.

As for the crazy quotes, I remember a quote over 2 grand for 3rd party only just after I passed my test, damn crazy prices.

Mmm I got quoted around £2k this year for my 1.6 fiesta on my own, strangely enough a 2L engine swap only raised the insurance by £200 or so.

Belive it or not small cars are not always a good choice.

My Peugeot 206 2.0 HDI LX (90BHP) was a tad over £900. My current car, a VW Bora 1.9 TDI (130BHP) is in the region of £600 (both fully comp. I will point out).

Small cars tend to have a reputation for younger drivers ranting the shit out of them, so almost everyone under the age of 25 gets clobbered.

£2k Third Party on a Fiesta 1.25 last year when I was 17, this year it's the same price Comprehensive. So yeah, it's a rip off.

I'm 19 and I drive a 2003 Ford Focus 1.6, my insurance is £1200 per year, by myself, with no other drivers. I was lucky with that quote, the next cheapest was £1800.

I've had 2 previous years experience in a 2005 Toyota Yaris 1.25 (my mums car), which was insured under my dads name (6+ years NCB) at £900 for first year when car was brand new, and £700 last year. I'm now off that insurance and it's now £150


the UK is a pure rip-off for anything related to driving.

How on earth have you got that on a 316? (and with who?) the cheapest I could find on the Focus (1.6, 4 door, 51 reg I think) was just under two grand and the highest was around £3500. I'm staying on my Dad's policy atm because with Tescos you actually can earn a discount for being a named driver (like a non-transferable no claims bonus). Out of interest does anyone know of any companies that will offer classic insurance to a new driver? I couldn't find any that would give me a quote online maybe I should try ringing one because my Dad's got a '59 Morris Minor lying around

I pay less than £500 a year for my 90bhp 307 HDi and my 120bhp Aprilia 1000cc bike, both fully comp............

nah it goes quick with some mods ive done to it ..... but it just depends on how old your car is ,how young you are, and what safety rating you car has on how much it cost ya

I get motor-trade insurance, and as it's a family business (that operates worldwide), it extends to 'social, domestic and pleasure use'. Which means I am insured, fully-comprehensively, in any car or bike in the world, from Peel P50s to Bugatti Veyrons (not that many of either turn up at work, and I'm not likely to get test drives in either, either). Hence, perk of the job.
