1024 or 2048 for skin files?
Okay, I've done a few skins so far (no you haven't seen 'em yet) but I was wondering what size to upload them and why.

I know that they look much better at 2048 but does the game use them that size?

Hmm, I might even make it a poll...why not.
2048... Quality...
Both,

Post a link to the 2048jpg for high-quality fans and host the 1024 @ lfssdb.com and link it also. This way you can't do anything wrong.
Erm...512 for me
2048 to download, 1024 to upload to LFSW (if you upload there. I don't upload most of my skins. More out of laziness than anything :P)
I personally don't know if I prefer to see a 1x1 pixel dot on someone elses' skin while I'm racing, because last time I noticed .. well I take that back I didn't notice.

512x512 is plenty for me, it's clear enough to make out what it all is, just not excellent for screenshots, otherwise it doesn't make the slightest difference to me.

I use 2048 x 2048 for all of my own skins and for the skins of my buddies. LFS World will only take 1024 x 1024 which is still much better than 512 x 512.

I'm not sure why 512 x 512 is still used, it does little for LFS' reputation when it comes to appearance. Well that's my opinion. Having said that, the smaller res is useful for older PCs that might struggle with the larger textures.
Who doesn't want their skin looking the best it can be?

I myself like 4096x4096. Our team skins are that and looks stunning in movies and screenies.

But as said before, it can be hard with a slow computer. Also it's always like 4mb+ for the skin file :P
I've nevery tried 4096x4096 myself, so 2048 it is. I also offer a 1024 for those people with slow computers.
MAMMOTH 2048!

Never took on 4096, my computer is a bit clogged with sprite files, so I go for quality 12 in Photoshop and use the Pro-Kit. While the GIMP, I'm forced to rip the black mask and wireframe off, take the default skin, remove color, and assemble.

I upload at 2048, this way if someone downloads the skin and wants a 1024 version they can resize it, where as they cant take a 1024 skin and make it 2048(well, they can but it would be kinda pointless)!

I've started a 4096 x 4096 skin just to see the difference for myself!

Using 4096 x 4096 is just silly for online racing. It's a car texture. 2048 offers plenty of detail. 4096 is overkill.

quite right, a grid full of 2048 skins can really beat the crap out of my pc. But for a quality screen shot with only one car............ then resize the skin to 2048 or 1024 for racing!
8192*8192 for displaying a fly in pink underwear sh*tting on your windscreen visor.

LFS uses a maximum of 127 MB of graphics RAM for me (although with the SO improvements that might be a little bit more).

I have 768 MB of vRAM.

BRING ON THE 16384*16384!

Just gimme a skin and i'll post a screenshot of it :P

EDIT - Not sure if many GFX cards will cope though - doesn't DX9 (...and therefore DX9 cards) have a max texture size of 8xxx*8xxx?

How big would that be in real life inch's or cm's? surley that would be bigger than the actual car itself...........?????
227 inches (18.9 feet)
or
~578 cm (obviously, 5.78 meters)

lol.. that's HUGE!
I recall Scawen saying that you won't see any notable difference in skins bigger that 4096 x 4096.
maybe not in LFS. But a huge render in 3dsmax could show us some more...
We need somebody with the full version of the Bigrender Plugin... makes it possible to render more than 6000*6000 pixels output size...

Im not going to make that skin in 16384*16384 with my actual PC config. ..

What he said ^^, no chance with this pc!!!

"LFS quite literally LARGER than life!"

Well if you get me a skin big enough, i'll try pics in LFS (my avatar is from a 4096 skin).

I tried huuuuuuuuuuuuuge renders to stretch my Quad, but 3DSMax just crashed when i tried going over 5,000 pixels.

Biggest render i've done is a 3000*1500 one which was wasn't large enough to see any skin artefacts.

Yeah...I tried that with my Pecks and Abs but ended up tearing a ball.
