The loudness wars drive me mad too... I mostly listen to pre 1995 CDs these days.

But with all this talk of Death Metallic, I thought I should mention how well Chinese Democracy was mastered. Apparently the mastering engineer produced 3 versions with different levels of compression, gave them to Axl Rose and he chose the quietest one!

Quote from AndRand :anybody tried these?

Yeah, I had them for my old CRT monitor. The effect is amazing... it really is great - playing GTA3 was like watching a real toy car in my monitor. I never tried it on LFS (it was ages ago).

My set were for CRTs, I think the main difference with the LCD ones is due to polarisation (if I can put it that vaguely!). I'm not convinced LCDs are fast enough to produce an effect as good as CRTs though.

This makes me laugh... why would anyone waste all that time faking such a (relatively) niche product?!

It looks great to me (having not bought a G25!). Love the lights and extra buttons.

My mum has a BOSE system, and when she got it I remember thinking how utterly awful it sounded. I did a little googling later and found this:

http://www.intellexual.net/bose.html

and a lot of negative comments backing this up. I wouldn't touch BOSE with a 10m cattle prod!

Quote from shaun463 :Hang on a sec, does the computer recognise the wheel?

Yes it does, so you could use the pedals of this wheel (leaving the wheel on the floor) and use any wheel of your choice for steering.

Price reduced to £15.
For sale: Broken Logitech MOMO Force (red)

Hi All,

I'm selling my broken logitech red momo force for spares.

Here's where it's broken:
http://i171.photobucket.com/albums/u292/ted209/121_2817.jpg

It's the main plastic shaft, so I think it would be pretty difficult to repair. Also, the main long screws from the wheel are missing and the force feedback seemed a little erratic in the weeks before it broke, so there may or may not be something else wrong internally.

The pedals work fine, and the wheel comes with the official power supply:

For sale at £15 (including P&P).

It's not finished, but I don't think I'll get the time to complete it any time soon.

Here's a snapshot:

P.S. For those unfamiliar with the classic 80s music video from Aha "Take On Me" : http://www.vimeo.com/1150271

P.P.S. All footage is taken from the GFC races at Kyoto and Blackwood.

It may be that your motor has worked itself loose. It's a fairly common problem on the Red momo - if you search around there's a guide on how to take your wheel apart and tighten it up. It's not particularly hard, but will probably take you an hour. When you tighten the screws back up, you can put on a dab of superglue to make sure they don't come loose again.

The GFC is the first event I have entered.

I'm not particularly experienced and was worried I'd end up getting in people's way and even ruining someone else's race. However, everyone in the GFC is really friendly and helpful and everyone is made to feel welcome. While things are competitive at the very top, just completing a race is quite a challenge and there is always a positive and encouraging atmosphere.

The dual-class thing keeps things exciting through the whole race - you rarely have a lap when you're out on your own.

Being the resident Captain Slow, I'd love to have some more people to battle with at the back of the field! All you need to be is consistent and considerate.

Ok, I followed the tutorial word-for-word, but my car comes out all black and white, with no textures at all! The textures do show up in the preview window in blender. Any idea what I've missed? Perhaps it could be something to do with the layers?

Can anyone help me? Thanks, ted209.

PS Fixed it!! Yafray doesn't like .png texture files.

Force feedback settings myths?
ted209
S2 licensed
I have read many people's opinions on what the "best" force feedback settings for live for speed. I think the following settings are generally accepted as being best:

(in the windows control panel)
Overall Effect Strength: 100% (or less if you want)
Spring Effect Strength: 0%
Damper Effect Strength: 0%

There seems to be differences in what people use for "enable centre spring", some people use off, some use on, but set the strength to zero. Is it a myth that you should switch it on and set the strength to zero?

In game, people generally have force set somewhere between 30-100, but I've seen people go for 101% or 98% and similar. Is it a myth that it's best to set lfs ff strength to some similar odd number?

I've played around with centre spring and 101% settings, with my red MOMO, and can't really tell any differences. Maybe that gives me my answer, but does anyone have an opinion on these possible myths? If you can feel a difference, then in what car and doing what?

I'm interested in building one of these. I had a look on ebay and found several 7 segment displays requiring different voltages. Am I right in saying that I need a 5V one for the lpt port?

I'd like a nice bright big display - can anyone recommend one to me?

Thanks,

Ed.

I went to South Africa last year and took these with my Kodak DX7590.
They're compressed to reduce filesize. Got some other good photos too if you like these.

+1 I was only thinking of this yesterday. The current look left/right function is quite disorientating (even when set to smooth look). I would like a user-definable look angle, so instead of looking 90 degrees left, I can set it to look 45 degrees left (and still see something of what's going on in front).

Better still - I'd like the function to be "look left by xx degrees and increase the FOV by yy degrees". This makes some sense because when you're racing, you're often focussing on various points in the middle/far distance to judge turning/braking points, when you "look left/right" you're regaining awareness of your short distance environment and so are focussing your attention on a wider field of view.

Here's my second skin. Since there are no plans to port LFS to the C64 (and even if they did, it wouldn't be as good as Pitstop II or Revs), I decided to port the C64 to LFS!

Thanks Gobby - I have credited you properly in my above post.

This is my first post and first skin. It's Jenson Button's F1 car adapted for the Formula XR!

It's 90% adapted from Gobby's Honda BF1 skin.

I used the Lucky Strike logos everywhere, except the rear wing where I prefer the "DON'T WALK" sign.

Enjoy,

Ed
