It probably wouldn't do any harm to watch this over and over again until you feel like you already work there. :-)

Quote from MadCat360 :The C.A.R.S. thread on iR forums is absolutely hilarious. All the fanboys and haters are going at it.

Like most of the things people do in their spare time, sim racing isn't a hobby, it's just an excuse for a darned good fight. :-)</lurk>

Quote from tinvek :hmmm i might just be able to get into it before i run out of the door to go to work

:-) That's what I was thinking too. The daft things we do for this hobby, eh?

I can't see how they'll magic up the kind of resources required in such a short time though. The expected loads must have been planned for but exceeded considerably.

Quote from tinvek :bet they won't give anything to those that couldn't even register for the race

Can't be sure about that, but you're probably right.

On the flip side, if you managed to enter (I got in at just after half past when there were about 400 onboard) and the race "goes ahead" when the constipation clears, anyone who isn't around will lose iR.

Hopefully they'll just vape the session though.... assuming they can find the session among the melted down control rods and sea water sprayed in panic.

Quote from DeKo :Splits are being made by qualifying time Andrew, so you won't be thrown in with high irating drivers.

Thanks, but I can still see a start from the pits coming on. I fall into the slow but consistent category, which ought to put me nicely into a split with all sorts of random talent. :-)

Quote from anttt69 :QA event tomorrow they are paying $3/$5 just for taking part.

Ah, thanks. I was going to darken iRacing's door on Sunday to maximise my overlap with the (theoretical) NTM, but I'm easily bribed to come back a day early. 21:00PM (BST) ought to be pretty well attended, especially as nobody has to buy anything.

I think I'd better start from the pits though. Driving a new track with a high-ish, but highly rusty iR isn't a recipe for success.

Ah, thanks! I wondered where that had gone. It was an entertaining way of keeping an eye on things while unsubscribed from the iCircus, but obviously he changed the url when the format changed to include more details.

The fascinating bits, for me, are the pie charts showing that 60%+ of races are still Rookie class. Or maybe I'm misreading the data. Wouldn't be the first time. :-)

Quote from StableX :hahaha!

Hi Andy. :-)

In reality the new tyre model probably won't affect me at all. I don't drive quickly enough to damage them.

I'm probably more intrigued by the changes to hosting. It sounds like you might be able to hire a slot of time and do whatever you want within that slot, including multiple races.

I'm probably reading too much into things though. That *and* a price cut seems a bit too generous. This is, after all, iRacing we're talking about, and while I still admire their core code hugely, I don't think my skepticism about the service wrapped round it and the number of folk employed in non-programming roles is going away any time soon. :-)

Quote from UncleBenny :According to the iRacing staff, for now its just the new Nationwide car

Thanks for that. As a Skip enthusiast I was tempted to take a look again. Now I can save my 'free' 3 months' access until the last possible moment (15th May), which will just take me into the next season when the new tyre model may apply to more vehicles.

I'm not sure why I'm so intrigued by a feature which will make me even slower than I was already though. :-)

That's either super-impressive or really depressing. I'm not sure which yet. :-)

At least now I know what my first purchase will be the day I win the lottery. I did have a trip to Berlusconi's escort service pencilled in for that occasion, but not any more.

Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! Since I got badly bitten by the GT5 Nordschleife bug I've been saying the only thing I miss from my PC simming is three screens.

Argghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... I can feel the urge to find a couple of cheap reconditioned PS3s beginning to itch at the back of my brain.

Mmm... of course you'd probably need 3 copies of GT5 too.

Must ignore this news. I really, really must. :->

Quote from NSX_FReeDoM :Can someone explain to me how does the whole buying cars and track thing works?

Your monthly fee (subscription) is the same no matter what content you own.

If you buy a car or track it simply adds options to what you can test or race (once you have the right licence). The content you buy never goes away, even if you stop subscribing. But you can't use it in any way if you stop subscribing.

The $12 a month option is actually the most expensive option. If you "buy in bulk" and can commit to a year or more in one go, the monthly cost is much less.

Hope this helps.

Do it, you know you want to.

:-) Yes, I'd spotted that. But this close to Xmas delivery times are entirely random, so I'm going to try and wait until the end of January now. My iCrack subscription runs out then and I want an extra incentive not to resubscribe. Hopefully dropping about £270 on a PS3 will help stop me getting Skip Barber withdrawal symptoms. :-)

Of course if rF2 is out by then my plans may change again, but I'm not convinced it'll be out so quickly.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FRBlQLBUg5Y

As a grumpy old man I've resisted buying a console for many years... I could never see the attraction when the PC does things so much better in so many ways.

However as I have a G25 I am very, very close to hitting the "buy" button on a PS3 now. And it's videos like this which are leading me further into temptation. I have a nasty Nordschleife habit which needs feeding. :-)

Actually the only reason I haven't cracked already is that Amazon UK are out of stock on the GT5 bundle pack, which is good value for money (and ought to give me more financial wriggle room if I decide to sell it later).

Thanks for that clip... I think. I thought my PS3 itch had settled down, allowing me to be patient. But you just made it flare up again. :-)

Quote from Becky Rose :It's stupidity like that which makes your country an ideal grow house prime for gang rule.

I think it's important to remember that Mexico is uniquely placed with a *huge* border, right next to the biggest illegal drug market on the planet.

It has been estimated that the Mexican drug cartels have a turnover roughly equivalent to a third of the total Mexican GDP... and the cartels don't have to pay pensions, supply a health service, or run an entire nation. They just have to buy weapons (usually from the USA), bribe officials, and kill anyone who gets in the way.

It's not really a fair fight, which is why Mexico is becoming a very difficult place to live for a lot of normal citizens. It isn't a surprise many of those citizens are angry. They have every justification IMO because some problems really are too big for individual nations to sort out.

This is a good read if anyone's interested in more than just a knee-jerk reaction to the OP...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/pro ... correspondent/8909741.stm

Quote from Foilpact :Is it not ur place that all the drugs come from?

No, Mexico is just the unfortunate victim of geography. The drugs are produced further south and smuggled up through Mexico to the vast marketplace for drugs which is the USA.

Quote from RocksGt :Was anyone able to sync the G25 with the in-game wheel?

In 'Adjust Control' my settings, which seemed to get rid of this problem, are...

0
0
0
0
50
50
50
50
0 <-- speed sensitive steering
10
30% <-- Turning Lock
Off
Normal

I then alter the steering ratio in Tuning until I'm happy with the over/understeer (this will also depend what your Logitech windows settings are I suspect).

At first I had real trouble with that visual wheel lag, but now it's no longer a concern. Some people seem to have more trouble than others getting it dialled out though. Fingers crossed you won't be one of them. :-)

Quote from 510N3D :As much as I do agree with you on this point, I was actually referring to the simple fact that the devs had a forum at race sim central in the very beginning

Ah, right. I can hardly remember what happened yesterday, let alone in 2002/3/whatever. So you may well be right. :-)

Either way, I've been a lurker rather than an LFSer in recent years, and it was the iRacing thread which got me back here regularly in recent times. With that sim's information closed off to non-subscribers there are relatively few places you can keep up to date with what's going on behind the iRon Curtain. :->

Quote from george_tsiros : LFS takes less than 10 seconds for aston GP, with track load-on-start off, maximum settings.

LFS is a great project, and runs very well on old hardware, which is one of its strengths. I have it on my old laptop for that reason. However it is not a good benchmark for current load times in modern games & sims.

I find Shift load times (even the Ring, where I've spent nearly all my time so far) are perfectly acceptable when compared to sims like GTR EVO*.

Anyway, I wasn't trying to persuade you to buy Shift, but I recognised the problems you talked about and thought I could help. Obviously not. :-)

Quote from george_tsiros :
WHO THE BLOODY HELL WOULD ENJOY THIS GAME? before even given the option to return to the menu you have to complete at least two races!

I felt exactly the same way while I was learning how to get through the console-based start to this game. The races don't end until you've completed them. I alt-tabbed and shut Shift down from Windows.

Start a new profile, make sure you setup your controller properly at the start, and then you won't be stuck in the compulsory races with the keyboard and a frown. (I believe you can rename your movie folder to get rid of the annoying movies as well).

Once you get past that stage you can use the money you earn to upgrade a car and race wherever you like in the non-career sections. This game/sim isn't perfect (none of them are), but I promise you there's a lot of fun -- and simulation satisfaction -- waiting for you as you improve to a more grippy, 'sim-like' vehicle. I can't tear myself from races at The Ring. It's very immersive. Or maybe I'm too stupid to recognise a silly game when I drive one. :-)

My only significant problem so far is a feeling that the steering isn't quite right, especially at low speed. However it's not so bad that I can't overcome it and enjoy the actual racing.

Andrew McP

PS Didn't realise this was my first post here. I thought I posted quite a few times in the early days of S1/S2. Obviously not. But I've been watching the forums on and off for quite a long time. I promise I'm not paid by EA to sell copies of Shift. :-)
