Quote from hosep :Why is this game not on Steam?
millions of people download free to play games on steam every day, they can start with the demo and perhaps we will get some licensed drivers added to this game once they decide to get some licenses.
But yea if the developers are not interested in money, i dont blame them.
The amount of people playing is a bit on the low side.

It's a bloody good game too.
And runs on a toaster.
I think it would do very well on steam.
Maybe even to the point of reviving online races.

Yea
I usually just race one track until I'm very familiar.

Brands hatch I often race if it's available in games.

Blackwood is the track I usually race on in this game.

And I think you're right.. I hit a bit of a brick wall driving with my style.
I get good.. but after a point I just can't seem to improve much more.. while other players can lap significantly faster.
I guess I need to change certain factors in my style to really shave off the seconds.

Quote from EeekiE :That much lap time difference isn't just in setup.

You should always try to make changes to your driving style before messing around too much with the settings. It will ultimately make you much faster, even if you're handed a lemon.

Yea, I was sent a set up file from a p[layer online who was lapping very well.
Didn't make much difference to my sorry lap times though!
I guess it's all about getting them racing lines and braking just right

Quote from Ball Bearing Turbo :I have a pretty old I7 920 with a mild overclock, and was running 2 670s in SLI before... Now I use one 670 due to lack of SLI support in VR, and suprisingly, most things run quite well. LFS obviously, AC runs fine since you have to turn off most things anyway at this point, the Climb, Chronos ... the only stuff that I can't really play at all because it's just to low of a frame rate are ETS2/ATS. No problems other than that. 1070 is on it's way though Tongue

That sounds promising.

By the way, are you going to put the 1070 in your current computer with the i7 970?
Check that the slightly slow processor wont cause bottlenecking.

If your processor can manage a 1070 without any serious bottleneck, my i7 4810mq should also.

If my laptop and mother board etc can accept a higher spec GPU also of course.

Quote from Ball Bearing Turbo :Indeed, exactly this.

I have a powerful 970m SLI laptop, but unfortunately VR is not suppoerted well with SLI set ups.

This means I can only have one 970m running on VR.. that's not usually enough.

IF I did buy a DK2 Rift, I could probably get LFS running on it though, as its such an undemanding game.

BUT the immersion factor would probably put me off playing all my other driving games which I can't yet run on VR; Project Cars, Assetto etc..

SO I might keep away from VR until I upgrade my Laptop again in a few years Frown

But this point highlights again how nice LFS is for VR... even less meaty computers have a chance to run it.

Quote from Eclipsed :Here's version history, start from bottom to follow evolving timeline: http://en.lfsmanual.net/wiki/Version_History

Thanks.
I have to agree the updates are a bit thin on the ground, with long gaps in between.

Oh well.. Still a very nice driving sim experience.

The servers seem to be very easy to join and work well.

I guess there is fun to be had with whats here already.

The price I paid for the S3 though, I do think there should be some more material added soon.
Hopefully I got this game 'just at the right time' and the devs are going to fulfill the promise of adding more content to S3 very soon!

Quote from GAVD999 :S3 was released in April this year and I'm afraid only the devs can answer your second question.

Doesn't sound bad.
Apparently it took 8 years for S2 to materialize? But when it did it had quite a lot of extra content?

So, S3, only just been released, with the promise that there is more content to follow.
Lets hope the rest of the content doesn't take another 8 years, then maybe we will all be happier.

I also really think the devs should consider selling this game on Steam.
Games like Automobilista (great game also) probably sell exclusively on Steam?, and as you know, if you look at a particular racing game in the steam market, it gives you a list of other games you may also like - So LFS could get much exposure.

Priced competitively and with good reviews, I think LFS could do well on Steam and somewhat revitalize itself.

My question is, How long ago was S3 released?

Recently?
Then we should be getting more material anytime soon then ?

Quote from AnnieC :I did not buy LFS because of Oculus support but I do have an Oculus DK2 if that counts Smile So that's one and judging from the LFS topic on the Oculus forum there are a number of people there who bought LFS because of the Oculus support.

What computer are you using the DK" with?

I want to get one but am still unsure if my computer has enough power.

And yes.. Live for Speed seems Very nice for the early VR set available at the moment.
Just look at youtube videos of people playing LFS on VR, they think its great.

Quote from TheNoobisonFire :Please sir, can you call out 10 people on this Forum that owns a Oculus Rift. No, actually 5. Get five people to say they own a Oculus rift. If you can, then Ill take back all the stuff I said in my first post.

I'm thinking about getting one, lol

There seems to be pretty much unanimous input that LFS IS a great piece of programming.
But there are also a lot of comments here saying it just hasn't been developed - or added too enough over the years.

So I guess it seems, the devs have done everything right... apart from develop and add to the game in a timely fashion?

''Now, I dunno about you guys, but i wouldn't spend 300€ on an oculus rift when i have a crapy PC...i would just take that money and upgrade it.''

I don't have a crappy pc, but its a 970m sli (dual graphics card) set up.
The minimum recommended Graphics card for Oculus is a 970, so my specs are a bit under the requirement because Oculus does not use the dual graphics card set up very well. I think I'd have to use one graphics card only if using an Oculus.
Also, VR is in early stages of development, and even with a very powerful computer, we are not getting 1080p visuals yet.

So, I think I'd rather keep the computer I have, and get a used Oculus DK2, because it runs so well on LFS and isn't that far behind the Oculus CV1 in quality.

Thanks to LFS's excellent Oculus Rift optimization, I and many others are able to enjoy VR, when on most other games you'd have to have a better rig.

I may agree with you about the amount of content available for this game considering its age though.
But I guess it depends how long ago S2 was released?

S3 is quite a recent addition I think, so hopefully there will be more to come.

''Enjoy LFS while you're hyped, m8, but dont come here here lecturing about how its better then this and that, we know about it, we lived it through the good times! Now you just can't compare an old simple game with the new complex and detailed rivals, because they are not even in the same league.''

But the interface is probably the best I've seen.

I was saying that these new games could benefit from similar implementation also - in my opinion.
I have no intention of bashing other games.
Project cars of course looks better - but it doesn't run as well and the interface is not as user friendly and instant.

Quote from Ingolf :Yes, I agree with you MysticReverie. LFS is a solid piece of code/art. That's why it's been going strong for so many years. Welcome to the forum!

ThanksSmile

I think you summed up my sentiments in one line - a solid piece of code/art.
That's what I like

I don't know how many people play it, or if it's loosing popularity.
All I know is it is a pretty polished game if you ask me.
Smooth, with a massive amount of easily accessible options.

I'd love to see some of the options available in this game in the other racing games I play, that's for sure.

I discovered another gem earlier.
When I download the car set up files, I can just double click them and they go straight into the game just like that.

It's touched like that that help make this game what it is.

And as my original title says.

It's a lesson to developers on how to do it right.

Graphical tweaks on the fly, extensive option interface, buttery smooth game play - the graphics may not be next gen, but maxed out im getting over 300fps, that's massive since the graphics look pretty good anyway, not so ancient. And if the graphics engine is prety old, they've manage to do a great job with it, the design, bright colours etc.

My project cars game for example stutters , I don't think it has anything to do with the quality settings... it just doesnt sync right with my monitor.
I've tried allsorts of workarounds.
Assetto corsa also sometimes has those issues.

So, LFS seems well optimised to me also.

I've also only just joined this forum and only just bought the game.
So I can't tell you if the devs are lazy and have not produced enough over the years.
Maybe I will feel the same if the game is hardly updated in the next year or two.

As I say, all I know is it has a great interface and is buttery smooth.

Another fine example of just how user friendly this game is.

Quote from lfsrm :Cmon lets dont become a bunch of apologists, yea the game is smooth and all ( from a 13 year old engin running on modern pc what more do you expect ? ), but don't tell me RB4/FZ5/UF1 etc interiors are the finest details in gaming industry or Aston is a realistic track, LFS deserve a way better representation because of the solid base!

Fanboyism will not fill up the server lists or make the game more attractive. Shrug

I'm just giving my opinion.
I have a pretty powerful 970m sli laptop.

I can play Assetto Corsa and Project cars on high settings pretty easy.
I still think LFS is great.
I've no idea about 'the finest details in gaming', that's probably project cars graphically right now.
Project Cars is fun too.

I'm saying Live for Speed is also fun and everything just works well.

And for people who can't afford a massive rig for a next gen VR experience, LFS's solid VR support is great too.

Probably a stupid question, but how do I add car set ups to my car?

I can see files to download, but where do I put them and how do I choose them in game?

Thanks

Hi Smile

I'm new here and really liking this game.
It's so smooth and user friendly. I love it.

I'll be putting some time in and hopefully will be competent enough for a few races soon.

Cheers Smile

well, why not sell on Steam.
The sales would possible double.

Games like Automobilista sell on steam, so this one would too.
Live for Speed - A lesson for all on how to do it Right

I want to say that I think this game should be used a a template for any other games in development.
For a few reasons:

The graphics are so smooth. Yes, they are not the same detail as say Project Cars, but they look absolutely fine, they really do. This is due to the way they have been implemented I guess. Great looking, bright sky, with everything else just Very clear and functional. The anti aliasing works well too. The Frame rates I'm able to achieve with maxed out settings is incredible. I've also heard great praise for this game for its Oculus Rift support - also a famously smooth experience, so people with limited power computer may even be able to enjoy the experience too.
So, that's lesson one - Brilliantly optimized graphics.

Lesson two would be the incredibly good interface. So many options available and all pretty easy to navigate.
The graphics settings can be changed ON THE FLY, which is just GREAT. So many other games require you to restart the game even if you change just one setting - this makes the whole tweaking process very cumbersome.

I've also had no problems at all getting online and into a race pretty fast.
The skin modding process is so easy, even I can do it !
The game feels quite relaxing and enjoyable when driving around too - a nice atmosphere.

So, there are a few other lessons.

Anyway, sorry if this sounds too much like a review - I just wanted to add my comments on this excellent game.

I had the demo game for a while, and very recently upgraded to S3.

Great game.

I couldn't set my resolution that high, but I managed to do a test this way:

I set Dynamic Super Resolution in Nvidia control panel to 3840x2160.
The Gpu upscales to this resolution, then somehow downscales it back to 1080, for better quality.

LFS looks much better with this DSR setting.
I also Disabled my SLI so I was only runing on one GPU, since the Oculus sli situation doesnt sound very good.

So, Running one 970m, with DSR enabled set to 4x upscaling, I managed an average of 140fps playing Live for speed, with 10 other cars on the track.

I probably wont get very good results on project cars etc, but it looks like Live for Speed will run for me if a get a rift.

I was considering getting a now cheaper Rift DK2 instead of the new CV1.

I don't have the processing power for anything too fancy, and from what I've heard, Live for speed is great with a Dk2.

Can my Laptop manage LFS with Occulus rift?
MysticReverie
S3 licensed
I have a Laptop with 970m Sli Graphics card set up.

That should be powerful enough in real terms, but I don't think many games, or the Occulus unit itself supports Sli set ups very well.

However, I get such massive framerates playing LFS on my 1080p monitors, I thought maybe I would be ok with an Occulus.

Can anyone advise?
Or does anyone know of the LFS programmers offer Sli support for Lfs with Occulus?

Hi !

I really like this game.

I have many driving games, but this one works very well in many areas.

Nice physics.
Smooth graphics even maxed out, with amazing frame-rates.
Nice in car views.
Pleasant to drive.
