Hey, you don't hear me saying a bad word about the realism of the game. It's great. But I do not think the game itself as a whole should be deprived from all silly stuff... surely if you organize a serious event people would be more serious (I would) and they'll believe they're actually racers.
But why would anyone enforce such a realistic environment everywhere? That does not make sense to me. It's not a sacred "thing" that may never be messed around with, it's a game as far as I know.
More realism is always a good thing, but doing crazy unrealistic stuff in such an environment can be very fun as well I think, it's not something to be ashamed of.
Some of you guys have a real scary obsession with realism if you ask me.
Anyway, as I've read, servers that are meant for real serious hardcore realism do have measures against it. I don't see why you would expect every user of LFS to be as serious... That's just simply denying the reality that it is a game and it will always be a game. If it's not a game, you shouldn't be able to _play_ online for free (or for a little bit of money) if you ask me.
If you can't wreck in the race and you can't reck after the race how can you play bumper-cars online??
Then, why has that time been spent on it? Really to have a good racing simulator, right? That does not exclude the fact the horizons could be broadend in the future, does it?
Yet, if the devs claim the engine can't cut it, then I do not see a point of discussing the fact that it is not possible.
But when I'm driving around, it all seems so damn realistic and I personally would love to see a game that allows you to drive that way in a pretty real environment, with highways and whatnot. Even with some basic AI traffic to avoid. The point of that is that it would be a whole lot of fun, obviously. Being one man and having no experience with that field of programming, I will never achieve anything that comes close to the realism of LFS. But just dreaming I'm whishing I could take the simulator stuff from LFS, redesign the way tracks are rendered so that in theory you could have roads that could go on forever, intersect roads, draw stuff on the roads (marks), put some traffic signs up and have a solid "track" designer as well... man, I really have in fact dreamed about something like this (no kidding, really... dreamed).
Anyway, my question is, what would be the main challenges to overcome if you were to start from LFS to create something like that? The physics would be pretty awesome already, tracks look good now but should somehow render differently or something?
I'm just wondering, what the challenges would be, technically. If we were to have access to the LFS source code (all 6 million characters of it) (which is not the case, and shouldn't be the case). Just wondering, but really, it would be so much fun, for me.
I'm playing the demo and will probably stick to it. I'm not a bad-ass gamer, but I do like a good race-sim now and then. And this one is pretty slick, reminds me a lot of GTR-2 but without a lot of useless stuff around it.
Anyway, I don't have a driving wheel or pedals, so I guess I won't ever run the big leagues, but hey. It's a very cool game and I've never played a racing sim online before, it's really cool. Especially the unpredictable suicidal maniac that comes on to the tracks now and then. It adds some extra excitement.
I got to know the game via a friend who knows I'm always looking for (if possible free) excelent driving simulators. I started with the idea LFS was open source and there was an open to create a public road driving sim. But that wasn't the case. It's still cool to race everyone online though.
Anyway, I tend to rant... if you see me on a track one day, please remember to let me pass and then kindly offer me your super fast setup, obviously
