You won't regret the VR purchase but note that there is a stuttering thing (something to do with the physics engine/graphics engine update rates if I recall? Someone correct me) going on for now, but once you're immersed it's not too noticeable. I'm in the same position as you and a few laps of VR especially with some of the better mods is very good. In VR, even more so, you really get the "LFS" feeling of the car's mass compared to any other sim w/ VR that I've tried.
RE: Music player... I didn't know there was one lol. Not even sure I am aware of an intro
Hey Scawen. Super interesting read, please don't get discouraged from posting by the conduct of dullards; some of us have been here ages and sit silently reading your comments just because LFS is a cool thing, and we're interested.
Also, I had no idea before this thread why the actual hell there was wild stuttering in VR even though my frames were capped and PC not taxed. I spent ages fiddling with settings and getting frustrated about it, now I get that's just an innate symptom of how things are calculated & drawn. Not brutal if you get really focused on only what's in front of you, but looking into the periphery hurts my visual cortex lol.
Thanks for sharing. Still anticipating your new physics / graphics!
Cheers man, yeah I still think about the days the community was really active, good times and I actually bought an S4 from one of the people I met on LFS who lives in my city, and we still chat sometimes. Funny how my dream car came across my path because I played LFS.
I remember playing the demo a lot and didn't really hop online for the longest time, and I remember the anticipation waiting for S1 to drop; couldn't wait to get home from work to try it. The fact that you could really feel the weight transfer in the LX6 when you floored it was really cool, the front end would felt lights because of the direct force feedback. There really wasn't much like it at the time.
Also remembering being in a race one Saturday (CTRA?) and Purolator came to deliver my shiny new G25 and I hesitated because I didn't want to lose place or wreck anyone, but by the time I pulled safely over and ran to the door he'd already left with my wheel >.>
Arguing with Tristan and others about horsepower vs torque was fun too lol
Probably right, but I don't know what it's trying to do for sure.
Yes I understand this, that was the foundation of my previous unlikely hypothesis about what could've been happening.
No there is no damage per cog obviously, but older cars cannot be shifted as quickly which lends itself to the fact that there could be more attempted complexity than there appears to be... Or, it could be as simple as "car x and only change gears at Y speed". Maybe a mod maker would have more insight, I've not researched this at all. Just "thinking out loud" so feel free to ignore it
Definitely agree with this. Of course I've never missed 3 shifts on a hot lap in a real version of any of these cars. One thing is that maybe since in a real transmission you're going to be limited by how much force you can put into a "bad shift" but you're allowed to move the shifter all the way on something like a G25, and maybe that creates a lot more simulated damage.... I don't know, just probably making up crap at this point but I do agree it's terrible unforgiving, and some cars more than others.
Not sure what's happened but I don't have this issue. Maybe in some of the really really old cars, but definitely nothing modern, so I'm not sure what's happening for you but hopefully you can sort it out.
I can play AC all day long - no problems after a small initial acclimatization. No problems with any of the content designed for VR - except maybe Eve: Valkyrie if I do the barrel roll thing. But I tried Skyrim using VorpX and even though it works well and looks cool, I found the same as you - under a minute and I felt terrible. Tried a few times, and doesn't seem that I'll be able to do it.
May have to do with VorpX / framerates / FOV. I used to think if I could just get games to render in VR it'd be no problem, I guess there is a lot more to making it comfortable than I gave it credit for.
I chose the Rift, and I did notice some slight motion sickness when I first started... but now I can play endlessly without any problems in any driving sim. Still feels weird to come to a stop and not feel the "lurch" when the car comes to a complete standstill, but my brain seems to have gotten over it. Anything with Z axis rotation (barrel rolling like in space sims) still gets me within minutes though. Thankfully I don't do much of that in driving sims. Usually.
It's perfectly usable on a machine that is far below spec... I recently upgraded to a 1070 but I had 2 670s before (SLi is useless in VR for now though) and I could run most things fine. The Climb had some serious loading time issues due to lack of vram but it eventually worked ok.
I don't find it short on delivery, and I definitely don't have a lot of disposable income... but at the end of a long day of work, and the kids are gone to bed, gaming is often how I like to relax. I've always really enjoyed new tech, and have been looking forward to the Rift for quite a long time. It's not like it suddenly appeared and I didn't have time to pile away some cash for it Interestingly though, nobody I've shown it to thinks it's silly or a waste of time - just a lot of "wow"s and "I didn't know this was possible yet". I am thankful I don't have the black screen issue Scawen has below though, that sounds pretty frustrating.
Thanks for that explanation and taking the time to put that all together Scawen, I'm interested to see what it transmits when visible in the foreground.
There is plenty of road like that here... a shameful overabundance given our silly highway speed laws. It's way too easy to get a license here IMO. Our roads are wider, straighter, and better lit than the remaining sections of the Autobahn yet mostly it's restricted to 100km/h, maybe 110 in some places. It's pretty silly.
The Ford GT sounds great; it sounds better from inside since you can hear the super charger and it's pretty loud - the Porsche is so damn quiet that video doesn't do it justice, and the Ford kind of overtakes the audio in my footage.
Nice video. I agree on the brakes.
Yeah, seems to be a common thing even over there. We get around the "legal" requirement with some devices that allow a few seconds to react first
160 sliding still sounds pretty hair raising.
Indeed it is. When I first got into this car, the driver made a right hand turn and opened it up (sadly not on video) in the middle of our downtown core, and was over 200 before we got over top of the over pass and down the other side.... My feet were off the floor and my eyes wide open thinking "wow - these guys are not afraid to use these cars!!!" At that moment, I knew I was in for a great evening
