Quote from Flotch :lol, not playing online does not mean I do not play at all. I am even planning to buy a VR headset for my 40s coming in few days : and the goal is mainly only to use LFS with it Cool ... no time to play frenzy, that's life, but I remain a fan of what LFS is bringing to me when I do few laps even against some AI Na-na

You won't regret the VR purchase but note that there is a stuttering thing (something to do with the physics engine/graphics engine update rates if I recall? Someone correct me) going on for now, but once you're immersed it's not too noticeable. I'm in the same position as you and a few laps of VR especially with some of the better mods is very good. In VR, even more so, you really get the "LFS" feeling of the car's mass compared to any other sim w/ VR that I've tried.

RE: Music player... I didn't know there was one lol. Not even sure I am aware of an intro Shrug

Hey Scawen. Super interesting read, please don't get discouraged from posting by the conduct of dullards; some of us have been here ages and sit silently reading your comments just because LFS is a cool thing, and we're interested.

Also, I had no idea before this thread why the actual hell there was wild stuttering in VR even though my frames were capped and PC not taxed. I spent ages fiddling with settings and getting frustrated about it, now I get that's just an innate symptom of how things are calculated & drawn. Not brutal if you get really focused on only what's in front of you, but looking into the periphery hurts my visual cortex lol.

Thanks for sharing. Still anticipating your new physics / graphics!

Hah, thought I'd pop through here and caught this thread.

Makes me want to get back into it again, was good times.

Echoing Bob's sentiment about being twice the age as when I got into it!

Quote from Bob Smith :I learned a great deal from chatting with many people (like your good self, Tristan, Todd, Anton, Colcob, etc), either here, on RSC, or all the contacts I once built up on MSN. I miss having these sorts of discussions in my life. The people I meet in real life have a far too diverse set of interests. Big grin

Cheers man, yeah I still think about the days the community was really active, good times and I actually bought an S4 from one of the people I met on LFS who lives in my city, and we still chat sometimes. Funny how my dream car came across my path because I played LFS.

Haha, oh and: Jaffa Cakes lol

I remember playing the demo a lot and didn't really hop online for the longest time, and I remember the anticipation waiting for S1 to drop; couldn't wait to get home from work to try it. The fact that you could really feel the weight transfer in the LX6 when you floored it was really cool, the front end would felt lights because of the direct force feedback. There really wasn't much like it at the time.

Also remembering being in a race one Saturday (CTRA?) and Purolator came to deliver my shiny new G25 and I hesitated because I didn't want to lose place or wreck anyone, but by the time I pulled safely over and ran to the door he'd already left with my wheel >.>

Arguing with Tristan and others about horsepower vs torque was fun too lol

There's no way AC is doing any proper simulation/estimation of dog damage based on how much force is being applied to the structure.

Probably right, but I don't know what it's trying to do for sure.

Quote :A sim gated shift only provides a few digital controller buttons, one for each gear. There's no analog input for the game code to calculate how far the engaged gear selector rod should move or how much axial force is present. It's either fully in or not.

Yes I understand this, that was the foundation of my previous unlikely hypothesis about what could've been happening.

Quote :Even if we ignore the lack of input AC's gearbox model just doesn't make sense. When you fail to engage a gear there's appears to be no synchro and the box always grind. When you do get a successful shift gearbox input is rev matched almost instantly as if it carries no rotational inertia. When damage happens it even applies to the whole box. There's no damage counter per gear/dog.

No there is no damage per cog obviously, but older cars cannot be shifted as quickly which lends itself to the fact that there could be more attempted complexity than there appears to be... Or, it could be as simple as "car x and only change gears at Y speed". Maybe a mod maker would have more insight, I've not researched this at all. Just "thinking out loud" so feel free to ignore it Tongue

Quote from Keling :AC's gearbox damage develops at a ridiculously high rate. Is there any real life test on how quickly one can kill a gear by grinding it, even if you could make the synchro fail? I'm fairly sure the amount of time I've spent grinding the box on an old car I used to drive is not on the same order of magnitude compared to the time it takes to kill the whole box in AC, and it works just fine.

Definitely agree with this. Of course I've never missed 3 shifts on a hot lap in a real version of any of these cars. One thing is that maybe since in a real transmission you're going to be limited by how much force you can put into a "bad shift" but you're allowed to move the shifter all the way on something like a G25, and maybe that creates a lot more simulated damage.... I don't know, just probably making up crap at this point but I do agree it's terrible unforgiving, and some cars more than others.

Quote :@Ball_Bearing_Turbo
Thanks. Tested on a different computer and got much less lag. Looks like some issue on my part rather than AC's code.

Thumbs up

Quote from Keling :Was away from AC for a long time. Got whatever latest update there was today and fired it up. There appears to be a very long gear engage delay or shift time limit on H-shifter cars and I have to release the clutch at a surprisingly late time for each shift. Otherwise the gear fails to engage and gearbox damage kicks in. On some cars a successful shift has to be done so slowly, when I finally get into gear the engine rev has dropped way below the rev match point (doing normal throttle cutting) and the drive line has to drag the engine back to speed, which is kinda funny on a typical sports car with a syncro box.

Was AC always like this or did they make it this way during a recent update? I don't remember having so much trouble shifting the last time I played it (which was at least more than half a year ago if not longer, so I guess a lot has happened).

Not sure what's happened but I don't have this issue. Maybe in some of the really really old cars, but definitely nothing modern, so I'm not sure what's happening for you but hopefully you can sort it out.

Quote from och :Tried the Rift with Quake, and felt sick after literally 10 seconds. I guess VR is just not for me. Frown

Not necessarily.

I can play AC all day long - no problems after a small initial acclimatization. No problems with any of the content designed for VR - except maybe Eve: Valkyrie if I do the barrel roll thing. But I tried Skyrim using VorpX and even though it works well and looks cool, I found the same as you - under a minute and I felt terrible. Tried a few times, and doesn't seem that I'll be able to do it.

May have to do with VorpX / framerates / FOV. I used to think if I could just get games to render in VR it'd be no problem, I guess there is a lot more to making it comfortable than I gave it credit for.

I chose the Rift, and I did notice some slight motion sickness when I first started... but now I can play endlessly without any problems in any driving sim. Still feels weird to come to a stop and not feel the "lurch" when the car comes to a complete standstill, but my brain seems to have gotten over it. Anything with Z axis rotation (barrel rolling like in space sims) still gets me within minutes though. Thankfully I don't do much of that in driving sims. Usually.

It's perfectly usable on a machine that is far below spec... I recently upgraded to a 1070 but I had 2 670s before (SLi is useless in VR for now though) and I could run most things fine. The Climb had some serious loading time issues due to lack of vram but it eventually worked ok.

Honestly don't know if I'd have the balls to do that on a bike. Then again, I've never driven one and don't have my license so who knows.

Quote from Racer X NZ :In other words, it's still pointless for most of us. Yes, Racing Sims and Flight Sim's are probably where it will find a home while it matures and grows but while that happens it will continue to be an expensive Beta, full of promise but short on delivery.

For people with a large amount of disposable income then it will be a cool toy. For the rest of us, it's an interesting stage that will lead to the future.

But we may well choose to wait for the upcoming working tech. Smile

I don't find it short on delivery, and I definitely don't have a lot of disposable income... but at the end of a long day of work, and the kids are gone to bed, gaming is often how I like to relax. I've always really enjoyed new tech, and have been looking forward to the Rift for quite a long time. It's not like it suddenly appeared and I didn't have time to pile away some cash for it Wink Interestingly though, nobody I've shown it to thinks it's silly or a waste of time - just a lot of "wow"s and "I didn't know this was possible yet". I am thankful I don't have the black screen issue Scawen has below though, that sounds pretty frustrating.

Quote from Scawen :
I've attached the shortcuts to this post, in case that may help.

How to use:

1) Run the shortcut "OVRServiceLauncher uninstall. Now your computer no longer starts the OVRServer when your computer starts

2) When you want to use the Rift, run the shortcut "OVRServer"

Thanks for that explanation and taking the time to put that all together Scawen, I'm interested to see what it transmits when visible in the foreground.

Quote from Kid222 :Nice stretch of road you got there! Would be nice to test it out. Also love the Ford GT sound. Smile

There is plenty of road like that here... a shameful overabundance given our silly highway speed laws. It's way too easy to get a license here IMO. Our roads are wider, straighter, and better lit than the remaining sections of the Autobahn yet mostly it's restricted to 100km/h, maybe 110 in some places. It's pretty silly.

The Ford GT sounds great; it sounds better from inside since you can hear the super charger and it's pretty loud - the Porsche is so damn quiet that video doesn't do it justice, and the Ford kind of overtakes the audio in my footage.

Quote from Kid222 :I did 240 km/h in a rental Boxster few years ago. During that drive some woman decided to cut me off and overtake another car right in front of me. Thank gawd these things got so good brakes! https://youtu.be/_TmAWnYQW3I?t=5m27s

Nice video. I agree on the brakes.

Quote from Eclipsed :I'm living in Deutschland, but still don't have a proper car for high speeds - so my PB is 222km/h with my 25 years old N/A MR2. Shrug On a public road (autobahn) and that fully legal. Cool PS. I also had once the need to go full on brakes from over 200 to about 120 because of someone who decided to pull into left lane to overtake someone about 5km/h slower then he was...

Yeah, seems to be a common thing even over there. We get around the "legal" requirement with some devices that allow a few seconds to react first Wink

Quote from UnknownMaster21 :my PB is 200km/h on straight, 160km/h on powerslide...

Wish I could drive once something powerful on car on fast racetrack

160 sliding still sounds pretty hair raising.

Quote from NitroNitrous :265km/h on my GT-Four ST205.... yes, Autobahn, although I've hit 250 in the Italian autostrada too. I've driven few Lambos at 130km/h... but on twisty roads with 50km/h speed limit, I think that's more exciting.

Indeed it is. When I first got into this car, the driver made a right hand turn and opened it up (sadly not on video) in the middle of our downtown core, and was over 200 before we got over top of the over pass and down the other side.... My feet were off the floor and my eyes wide open thinking "wow - these guys are not afraid to use these cars!!!" At that moment, I knew I was in for a great evening Big grin
