ive never needed to set up joypad before and with earlier versions of game the auto shift worked fine!

I need help please!?
ok so im using latest version of game
im using a Saitek P2500 Gamepad
now my problem is this - i have selected the auto shift but in game it wont auto shift through the gears, i have to set up shift down and shift up keys but even then it still does'nt drive right!
im a real novice at all this and need help, how can i get the auto shift to work so i dont have to worry about changing gear????
ps - the auto shift works fine if i select keyboard
