, back on topic - How's the Physics going Scawen This was the post on the first page that led to the debate over OS's. My question - How did a thread about Physics lead to this? Also, am I correct in thinking that it is ONLY Scawen that has to use XP? We can use Win7/8, Linux, Mac, Win 98 (can we still?) and XP if we want. Is this correct or have I missed something? Isn't that the message Scawen is trying to get across to people?

BACK ON TOPIC - I agree with Fordman's original post, a lot of time has passed since ANY announcement/update/news. Maybe it's time for a small news update given that the community are requesting it. Now I know that Scawen has already given his reasons for not doing so, and I know the community tends to 'jump' on anything that the devs say, but I myself (who couldn't give 2 hoots when the next update is as I accept the devs work ethic of "it's done when it's done") am beginning to wonder "what's going on?".
I visit this forum every day and have done for the past 10-11 years and I am saddened by the recent absence from the devs. I imagine I am not the only one either. So please Devs (anyone who wants to reply), say something, anything that gives hope to the community who just want reassurance that LFS is NOT dead and IS being worked on. I don't think this is an unreasonable request given that it is by people who 'love' this sim and not by someone who is going to flame you for whatever you say. The Devs are intelligent enough to know when a post is from a genuine 'fan' and not someone who demands things or critisizes you work.
Just my 2 cents from a long time member of this community

Haven't raced in quite a while now though, mainly due to lack of the physics update, but also due to low racer count* (cruise servers not including).

But I have noticed that since Scawen has posted more regularly lately, my interest in LFS has increased again. I know he has explained why he hasn't posted more often in the past, but surely he can see that just by posting 'something', we, the community are assured that he is still working hard in the background. As LFS has been around for 10 years now, it seems reasonable to me that if the developers wish to keep LFS alive and keep the community interested, then they have to remain active (forum wise) themselves. I know what happens when they do though; people start asking difficult questions like 'rally pack' (The Very End
) and when's the physics update due etc.. but the developers can 'filter' those out and just concentrate on the 'relevant' topics. It shouldn't be the reason not to post anything at all though. Then there's the argument that 'we are busy on the physics update, so posting 'no new news' is irrelevant. But it isn't!! Some of us still want some assurance that the waiting is worth it, regardless of what the post contains e.g. 'spent an hour today thinking about traction' etc. (poor example but you get the idea).
So please developers, don't disappear from the forums again, I believe that your presence alone is enough to keep the interest going.

But as with all the other 'old' crew, I don't race anywhere near as much as I used to back in the good old days. I just can't believe I've been racing LFS for 8 years now
and regardless of what has been said elsewhere in this forum about lack of progress, I still love the racing 
.I have long breaks then come back and fall in love all over again, only problem atm is that there are less and less busy servers
. A few times lately I have booted up LFS only to find nothing happening (relatively to how it used to be ), so I ended up closing it back down again . And before anyone suggests I try iRacing or any other sim, forget it, I've tried. NOTHING, other than LFS has EVER felt 'right' from the moment I booted it up for the first time 8 years ago. iRacing just felt wrong from the moment I stepped in for the first time, so that's out! I can't put my finger on it, or find words to describe what I mean, but LFS is 'right'; the physics are only a part of the 'magic', there's something else.....the menu works well, the online racing is 'genius', the web stuff, the community, the one to one communication with the devs (well 2 at least 
), the community (oh did I say that twice 
), Ario and all the other extra bits that the community provide, this is why I only play LFS. Even all those things still don't add up to what I mean about the 'right ' factor though. There's still something else........PASSION !!!I think this is probably the main reason why LFS's progress has slowed down, the devs have committed themselves to getting the physics right and will not settle until they have achieved their goal. This is passion over business, which is why I believe they left their last jobs over

I have no doubt.But one last point about the current trend on the forums about lack of progress; If you look at the 'good' posts, you will find that most complaints are either about current bugs that haven't been fixed, or lack of any new content or news about such content. And yet the devs have not really commented much on these points (point 1 in particular) in their responses, they're mostly about the reasons why dev has been slow and physics issues and stuff. I undersatnd totally why dev has been slow, but what about current bugs? Is there no point in fixing them as the new release will sort all these bugs out but not be compatible with current version, meaning scawen will have to debug an obsolete version

great idea , but after hosting the last 2 UK LFS Kart Meetings with my brother Jason, there are lots of things to consider and organise if you want people to commit and make it happen. they are:-
1. Cost - must make it affordable for those travelling far distances (especially abroad)
2. Value for money - If all you can provide is the Karting itself i.e. no accomodation, food, beer etc. then it can be very expensive when you add up all the other costs e.g. Hotel, train/plane, food, beer etc.
3. Pre and post racing - to make it a truly great event, it is nice to meet and chat (and get very drunk) with fellow LFS'ers. For this you need a place to go before and after the event e.g Pub, House.
We managed to secure the whole day at our local Kart centre for approx £45 per head, giving us a good 1.5 hours of track time each. Plus we were lucky to have Jason's house to accomodate everyone the day before and after, giving us plenty of opportunity to meet, chat (and get very drunk:nod. So the total cost for the event, food, beer and accomodation was approx £60 each. The only additional cost was the travel.
Now I know that is probably asking a bit much of anyone, and we can only thank Jason for the last 2 years for his generosity, but it does highlight a few reasons why it is difficult to organise an event like this at other venues across the UK.
I hope I have given you (Fordman) an insight into what you may need to look at if you want people to take a real interest in the event. I am certainly up for any event providing it is cost effective and good value for money. I have been to most of the Kart meets over the years (missed only 2 I think?), and I know from experience that travelling 200 miles to a kart meet, racing for an hour, then turning round and driving back home is not what I consider value for money or something I would consider doing again.

the centre can provide wetsuits if we need them, so don't panic if you don't have one

- If you can bring a tent with no hassle, then it would be wise, though may not be needed. Air beds and sleeping bags though are a different matter, bring your own!
Toll charge may be £5.20 according to my team-mates, but hey you get to get out for FREE!!!!

30 is the max because there are 10 karts on track at the same time, 3 drivers per 'team'/Kart. Otherwise there will be less time on track for each driver

No-one needs necessarily to get to Abergavenny by train as Cardiff or Newport is just as easy for one of us to come and collect you. the only problem with running more than one server of the same category e.g. 2 FOX Racing servers is that one will always be more popular than the other; resulting in low, if not nil racers in the second server! This happened in the CTRA where the most popular server (where even the fastest drivers raced) was the Bronze (or CTRA1 if I remember) server. The other servers were always quiet in comparison. So it is not a problem of 'SR money' as we have enough servers to run 2 if we wanted; but more the fact that LFS racers tend to gravitate towards the busiest servers for the best (and sometimes worst) races/action. But as with all public servers, you just don't know who is racing and their level of ability, so you just take care, not get too stressed when you get 'accidentally' taken out, and carry on. It's the nature of public servers I'm afraid. But we try and admin it as much as possible and we do respond to all reports via the forum on our website.
Myself, Tongey and kayJay all have cars and live in cardiff, so Cardiff Airport is the best option, but Bristol is just as easy
