The topic starter points to an interesting problem. I agree that this move to all different kind of server rules is a bad thing for online racing.
It may be fun to have a favorite server where you can gain more "points" and unlock cars. Being able to "progress" in online racing brings in a new dimension. On the other hand I can imagine that's it's very confusing for a beginner (of anyone who just wants to joint a server).
I think it would be better if you could just join a server without having to know what exactly the specific rules are. Now I'm forced to reading all the different kind of "rules" when I just want a race. A lot of the information is redundant. "No crashing. No swearing. No...", is that really going to stop those who regularly do that? Having different kinds of ranking systems, racing points of time requirements makes it even worse.
Servers shouldn't be getting this much autonomy I think. LFS would better include some basic options which the server can chose from (what cars, how many laps, auto restart or not, welcome message...). A ranking system would be nice, but only if it's integrated in LFS.
This would obviously limit server freedom, but I think it would enhance the user experience in general. Racers should be able to join any server, drive carefully and know that general rules apply everywhere.
Interesting stuff for a discussion
