@hrtburnout.. that's illuminating, thanks. So does that mean that a quad core 2.33Ghz is less useful to run LFS than a 3Ghz P4, for example?

What seems to have increased markedly since P4 days is mobo FSB speed, from 800ish up to 1333 now (I think). does the increase in the general data flow around the memory/ mobo that you'd now be getting with a quad core system make up for the fact that the single core running LFS is actually slower than the ancient P4? (actually, in my case, AMD2800+XP/333).

on separate postings, http://www.lfsforum.net/showthread.php?t=31380 a system around £400 is proposed. Dual core. I've poked around on overclockers.com (the source for the prices in that thread) and found that quad core is only £20 dearer (ish). So it would seem churlish not to have it...

Brilliant - thanks for the ideas. Pasting a second copy has worked this time - and since he has no access to my files all should be sorted !

I like the batch file copy settings idea too.. but (at least until a retail version of LFS is released which doesn't allow multiple installs!) I think that the second copy is the easiest option. Cheers... (now I just need to make sure he can't press "multiplayer" - where's that steel rule?!)

thanks, everyone.

I've previously used a second copy of LFS (@Keiran), but I found that I did have to unlock it. Not a problem until I ran out of unlocks !

@Garth yes, I was suggesting that different users of LFS would be able to effectively have their own copy of setups, rather as MS Windows does with new users. I accept that that may be over the top, and the steel rule/ cupboard combination may be more satisfactory !

Hey ho. Thanks.

Hi. Don't panic, he doesnt visit public servers - but my 9 year old loves to use LFS when I'm not looking. Unfortunately he also likes to change car colours etc and has mucked up setups a few times.

I thought that i would solve this by giving him a user account on my PC, and adding a second copy of LFS for him to play with without getting shouted at ! HOwever, this means using a second unlock (I don't know if that's "legal" but I figure it is, since only one person can be using the game at a time and both copies are on one PC?)

He does of course have his own driver name - and did always remember to change to "him" when using my LFS. Is there anyway of associating settings etc with a particular driver name within LFS, so I can go back to just using the one copy?

Thanks, in anticipation...

Tweaker, we are using SP2 but behind a router: windows firewall is off, there are no software firewalls.

I have gone into the network connection on the main PC and added the services for LFS there as well - have tried using its own IP address, as well as that of the router.

We've followed the instructions to set new services in router, and router firewall knows to forward those services to the ipaddress of the "host" PC.

That seems to work OK, and we can connect to that host using a second pc behind the firewall - but only by entering the specific IP address of the host PC. We can't make it "go out to the Internet - then come back again".

It did work once today, in that when I was setting up my PC a couple of drivers managed to jump in ! BUt I can't do it myself, so to speak.

What I mean is: Main PC "hosting" multiplayer game. Laptop looking to join that specific game either by choosing from lfsworld or by typing name in "join specific game". In either case, I get the clientconnect error mentioned above. (Perhaps its normal not to be able to connect in this way?)

Host PC is S2 licensed, hosting a demo game. Laptop is demo.

Any clues welcomed, as we seem to have exhausted the help / links from this forum !

Thanks...

hi. in answer to your question i have the FF wheel. with xpsp2 (pro) and now with sidewinder 4 control centre.

works fine now (but still need to tweak wheel settings - profiles now mean that degrees of movement of wheel can be set outside of lfs, as can centring and forces. can't quite work out what's best, yet... sure we'll get their in the end!)

P5YcHoM4N, you're a star. Tracked down a copy of version 4.0 software from driverguide - ignored all of the warnings from XP and it works fine ! No more combined pedals. Now if I could just get rid of the dead zone...
Thanks

[quote=P5YcHoM4N]... Second when setting up the profile in the wheel properties make sure its set like this (separate), and then in games makes sure you have selected "Separate Axis"...

Hi - wonder if you could confirm that it's "safe" to install sidewinder 4.0 on an XP installation - I'm sure that it previously caused me huge problems. I now have clean install with sidewinder precision pro running without the sidewinder software - mostly OK but I can't get it to separate the pedals.

Thanks
