AWS 2023 - Round 3
All-wheel-drive Winter Series 2023
Round 3

Monday,16th January
18:30 UTC / 19:30 CET / 20:30 EET

Last season AWS introduced new engine type in it's cars lineup - electric. This year the league goes a step further and introduces a new round specially for electric ars - Ampere Grand Prix. Since electric cars have a more limited range and energy recharge takes a lot longer than refuelling fuel for internal combustion engine, standard race length of 40 minutes would be difficult to set up and end in a fast energy conserving cruise. That's why rounds with electric cars in AWS will consist of 2 races, results of both will be counted together to have one result to declare one round winner. Both races will start with same grid order, set up from qualifying results.

Round 3 of the 2023 season features the heaviest car of the schedule - the electric BZ30 Roadster brings scales up to 1400kg,which will create own handling characteristics. Still the car is equipped with slick tyres and has minor downforce assistance to increase cornering speeds in the tricky Aston Cup configuration, which effectivelly consists of well known Aston Club and Aston Cadet reversed configurations. As always the new car brings the challenge of setting it up for the race, but well made set up is just one part of success.

Round info:
Track: Aston Cup (AS2X/A22)
Laps: 2x12 (2x52km)

Round 3 of this season brough the first ever double header race of the league's history - that was the only solution to provide fast paced racing with electric cars as the recharge has been made more realistic compared to 1st LFS version allowing electric motors for cars. So the usual 40 minutes race distance was divided in 2 halves, creating new challenge and 2nd chances for racers as they had to start the race from same position twice.

Winner of season opener A.Valta had no real competition this time,so he led all 24 laps through both races gathering up almost 20 seconds gap over competition on round total, taking also both round bonus points. The race for 2nd place was more competitive - both Thehemuli and Lorenzo exchanged positions several times through both races, trading also positions between races, but the finn had bigger gap over his rival on race 1 than the rival over him in race 2,with this Thehemuli is scored 2nd and Lorenzo 3rd in final race results.

With this A.Valta added 50% gap increase to reach 15 points lead in championship table, which is a solid advantage, but everything else than guarantee with another 5 rounds to come. Also both following positions have not changed - Thehemuli is still 2nd,but after this round has at least 2 points gap over 3rd place driver Lorenzo. This was also 1st of two rounds for Megawatt award - the positions are exactly same as race results and coincidentally also overall championship standings, just the gaps are different - A.Valta has 5 points lead over Thehemuli and 7 over Lorenzo. The 2nd round for this award will be the season finale at Westhill on the dirt rallycross layout.

The competition for Rookie of the year award is still quite weak - despite attending just 1st round,Richard is still ahead on the table while being 17th overall, however he's been catched by Tbug on points, who is losing on tiebraker of highest finishing position.

No changes is teams championship - Race Green Autosports once again scored most points and increased their lead in standings - now they're 22 points ahead of Zafiralis. 3rd is still MRc,also losing points to their closest rivals - now 7 points apart from 2nd place. Also on top of the nations cup is status quo - Finland scored maximup points for the 2nd time this season and is now already 42 points ahead of 2nd place nation Czechia. 3rd is now retaked by Italy, but already 19 points behind 2nd place.

Now racers have just a single week break until next round - 4th round is already next monday. It features the only round that has been run unchanged through 12 years of AWS history - Winter 200. It's a 200 kilometers race on the very familiar Kyoto Oval using the fastest of original LFS AWD cars - FXO GTR. It has always been a cooperation effort as 2 cars are faster than one on the highspeed oval. High speeds mean less margin of error, that leads to high unpedictibility of the round - this is the round that can bring changes in championship tables.
