Live for Speed - Splitscreen
I would like to see a 2players Splitscreen system, like in MotoGP 3 or GT (1-4).

I'm making some competitions, i'm calling "LANs". But it's not quiet a real LAN because we don't have as many computers as we need. In MotoGP 3 we don't have to have 5 computers for 5 racers, because there is a good (only up to 2 players) splitscreenmode. We raced with 4 PCs (because my dad and his friend only have little monitors) and 6 persons. Since two weeks, my dad and his friend are driving LFS (demo).

That's my personal fact, but generelly, it's much more interresting to drive in a Multyplayer mode, than in Singleplayer. That's why I'm loving LFS and it's great Internet Multyplayer mode. But it's even more exciting to see your friends/enimies fighting. To smell this competition next to you is the best thing you could smell in cyber gamin'. That's why egoshooters got a splitscreen mode, too.

LFS is the best racing game... ups sorry... racing simulation I knew. With this feature I think, it would be not only interresting for pro-gamers, it would be more interresting for everybody, who wants to see his friend gaming against you, without carrying his/her computer.

And it would be good for teamracing. In a kind of Coop mode. You could change to the friend next to you, and make it in a kind of official way. There would be the possibility of 40 racers on a server in twenty cars. (Me as a noob thing this)

So

that's all, and sorry for the sometimes bad English...

I doubt this will ever happen

never? or ever?
I would like it, but it seems very arcady. If this does happen i don't think it should be online, just you and whomever is right next to you racing.

how on earth would you get 2 people playing on 1 monitor anyways??

sorry, but split screen games are made for being played on a TV where you can see what your doing :S

Not really going to work with a racing sim, TRD2 was actually quite fun split screen.
I think you'd get about 0FPS doing that, too, unless you had a mega-uber computer, then you might get 10...

I think this would require a huge rewrite of LFS, too. Polling two controllers, generating two sets of physics simultaneously, drawing two parts of the track at the same time, etc, etc, etc.

I don't see this happening any time soon :-\
Another -1 for the above reasons.

I don't think so. What does calculate the AI then? And there is no such thing as "drawing track during race" go to blackwood, press SHIFT U go to the highest view and look around.
well how do you wanna mount 2 wheels in front of one screen anyways?
Absolutely no way, thank you.
Framerate is not a problem, some of us are running machines that play LFS at three times the framerate that the eye can see. Slower computers could lower graphics detail.

You may have a big television and a small computer monitor. For me it's the other way around because I spend my personal money on things I use the most...

Despite the positive things i've said, it's still a naff idea.

You'd only have one wheel !?

Playing without a wheel? Then LFS looses it's realism and your better off with a more controllable arcade game.

I have 2 screens connected - I clone not split and FPS is identical on both so why not do that when it splits?
what would the 2nd person use for controls sam?

@becky, the eye is believed to see at 25 FPS
.. yes, but its unstead; the eye can perceive up to ~55 FPS

if you dont believe me, use your FPS limiter, and you will see a difference until you get to ~55 fps +

<snip>

And what exactly do you think the limit of the human eye is?

EDIT: XCNuse beat me to it.

Actually, I notice flicker on a CRT at anything below 85Hz refresh rate. I know that's not the same thing as framerate, but the effect is somewhat related.
As said before, split screen doesn't go with LFS. It would be like playing split screen in X-Plane or sth like that.

Split screen racing games like GT4 are for PS2-Beer-Friends combo, pretty fun because you can throw things to your opponent to distract him LOL.

You can play like this Run a LAN game, run LFS again and join your game. I get 20fps with 4xAA and 4xAF. It's quite playable when AA and AF are off
Splitscreens are nice if your physics model is as pimitive as NFS:U, but not LFS. Good physics are too computationally intensive.

I don't want to see a split screen in LFS until we get powerups and magic items.

The eye stops discerning a difference at around 60fps, which is why I said some of us have computers that can run LFS at a rate three times faster than the eye could see. Mine for instance does 200fps until I max out anti-aliasing and antiscopic filtering, and my computer is already several months old (out of date) and wasn't top spec when I bought it.

Two controllers is actually very easy under DX, you set the controller and call the input routine, then reset the controller and call the input routine again. It would take longer to code the extra controller input menu than to make the ingame change.

Two sets of physics isn't an issue, LFS is already handling that - you just call up the player parent-physics function twice.

Two camera points is also fairly easy, again you just call the world rendering routine twice. It would need some tweeks for the HUD and camera viewport but would not be a major job.

However, it's still a sucky idea.

now i have SLi working i know what you mean, my pc is just 2x 6600 GT's in SLi (thats just a tad slower than one 6800GT, max aa and max af, 55 fps, and thats with 250 mb dds folder!
2 players on split screen + 6AI cars = MAJOR LAG

Unless you run 4GHz processors and the BIGGEST graphics cards you can get.
Twin 7800's here, 880mhz FSB dual channel DDR2 ram, a dual core processor and a RAID stripe to boot. HOWEVER...

All that means is I can turn up the graphics options to maximum, if you make compromises with the display settings you could run split screen on a quite old system.

But I still think the idea sucks.

! thats quick, what cpu you have? im guessing you'll be all newfangled and have an X2 or FX-57 upwards!
