I find running R2 tyres on short races could be improved by giving us part worn tyres . The thickness of the rubber makes a hugh difference to the way the tyre heats up .i find once they are thinner they cool down alot quicker .
I agree with Turbo Dad. I always run into trouble with overheating R2s, especially in shorter races. When there is little thread left the tyre cools much quicker this giving better grip when at optimum.
You cant wear a tyre out yourself before a race because you always start with a fixed car and new tyres.
im sure plently of professional racers use part worn slicks or scrubbed tyres for qualification etc.
Scrubbed means, in the context of F1, having done about a half a dozen laps. Not warn, but's it taken the release agent off the tyre. WE don't have tte problem of release agents, so scrubbed tyres are not required.
Original post was about part worn tyres, I was just trying to give the previous poster some insight by mentioning scrubbed.
For most purposes, racing tyres will benefit from an appropriate 'Scrubbing in' procedure. This provides the best combination of performance and longevity under race conditions. There are several difficulties that arise when using racing tyres if they are not scrubbed in prior to use. The most common is "Cold Graining", where the layer of the tread compound in contact with the track, fails in shear with the layer below. The result is a very visible low frequency, high amplitude rippling effect, not just to remove the outer sheen. But I presume the tyre physics in game are not that advanced (yet )

As Uniamed said, once the tyre is part worn, the rubber is thinner allowing the tyre to cool quicker. Therefore allowing the grip levels to increase quicker in short races.
I know about scrubbing in tyres, and doing a heat cycle or two to perfect them
As for part worn tyres I don't have a problem getting the temps up, or keeping them up. But in most club races they often use one set of tyres for a whole season, so perhaps we can have a way of saving a set of tyres from a race to use in the next (league) race. It's probably too hard to implement, but would be nice.
I definitely don’t have a problem getting them up to temperature; the problem is keeping them from getting to hot while there is still a lot of rubber left early in the race
Being able to use the same set of tyres for the next race would be a great help.
Or I'm sure easier to implement would be an additional tyre selection, with only a change in the rubber depth i.e. R2 full / R2 part
The thickness is obviously altered within the game due to wear rate, so it should be easy to change the starting value for rubber depth.

This is a very good suggestion imo, at least untill something is done about the slick tyre compounds. Using anything other than R2's even in long races is pointless so there's little reason to practice on lower grip R3's. Once I'm accustomed to a track I can handle the temps peaking a bit high but when first practicing it would be a real help to not have to deal with them spiking so high due to not knowing the track well and overcooking them.

Done a 40 lapper the other night and my fastest time was on lap 37!
(I realise fuel /set up is also a factor)
Most races that take part (public) are a lot less than 40 laps, so I never get to drive on optimum tyres.
50% worn tyres option must be easy to implement
