I know a lot of families researching ancestors all over the world use http://www.ancestry.com
For some parts of it you need to be a registered paying customer to read but I think the msg board is free. Keir link
Also there's awesome software called Family Tree Maker to help keep track of things.
Not sure if this is what you were looking for but hope it helps a little.
