I won Jive Jones' guitar!

I'm serious actually.
Who the heck is Jive Jones? What kind of guitar? I just picked my guitar up yesterday for the first time in a very long long time. It is a cheap piece of junk acoustic ($100 job) and I was trying to figure out how to fix the action on the strings. The strings are literally about 12-14 mm off the fretboard at the higher frets. Makes it kind of difficult to learn anything. After a year now (or has it been two?) the only thing I can still do is the introduction to Wish You Were Here and the beginning riff from Zepplin's Black Dog. I'd really like to actually learn some stuff, but it is impossible to play. It's impossible to change cords smoothly and impossible to play anything up above the 8th fret. I was Christmas shopping and saw a cheapo, but actually made by Fender, electric in the store and was amazed at how close the strings are to the fretboard. Made me want to look at mine and figure something out.

Haha, actually that's the same thing I had to do to fix Jive Jones' guitar, at least, one of the many things I had to do as the guitar was trash, I cant be bothered to play on it.
The thing you have to do is lower the Nut, wich is the thing that guides the strings to the tuning pegs on the neck.
The way I did it was simply take it off and sandgrind it carefully. It's a wise thing to check how much mm you want to take off before grinding it.
Glue it back where it came from with care and it should be much better now.
Of course, the other part making the strings hoover is the bridge. You should be able to lower it a bit with the screws on the bridge baseplate.

Jive Jones had 2 hit songs for like a couple of months, but after that nobody remembered him anymore, he just vanished.
He's more active behind the music-scenes. He's produced songs for tons of stars like Madonna. I think.
He's a total douche, but yeah, it's kind of him for giving me his guitar.
