Ever since that Caribbean Cruise Server by CLC went up, it's always been full. I think we should have reserved slots for the admins etc.. Or people can buy a reserved slot of the server owner.
Servers such as the CLC are already running an insim application so it's very easy for them to have reserved slots. I recently included this on STCC servers and it was not hard to add - given we already had insim management software running.
Yes, but it's pain in the ass when people try to join and get kicked and try again again and again, because they don't know why the joining doesnt work and they get d/c. Ruins restart votes and is just dam annoying, but of course there is no problem if the server is already full...like at the moment, or admin is already there to fill the slot.
Well in STCC case obviously restarting votes aren't an issue, as that's automatic, but I can see your point. I wouldn't have thought CLC restarts either? Outside of lapper I think these are the only two servers running dedicated server management software at the moment.
I wasn't saying the idea was bad, far from it, I approve of it so much that i've coded a sort of solution in for my own use! Just that in the case of the CLC servers it wouldn't be hard for them to add, and it was CLC servers that this post was raised about.
EDIT: ALthough the disconnect message does explain the reason for non-admittance so I dont think that's a problem. I've not seen the same person try to connect more than twice in a row myself.
This is more about the community at large, for whome I think reserved slots are a very good idea, it would be better if the slot didn't appear as available to ordinary users, effectively allowing 24/23 connections. Perhaps when Scawen raises the number of allowed connections this might be something he can do.
Until then STCC will keep it's reserved slot, and I imagine if the popularity of their server continues, CRC may well introduce the same thing - until then the functionality of a reserved slot isn't going to see widespread use.
However I think it will limit servers to 22 slots because the 1 slot needs to be reserved for the admins at all times. Booting someone off because an admin wants to connect won't work how does the server know who to boot off to make room? Unless connections could be raised to 25+ with 23 being players and the rest admin only.
