Low-Res cockpit option
i'd like to see such an option because you loose alot of fps on the cockpit.
turn the settings down, maybe that will reduce FPS
the cockpits are fairly low res now....

maybe he wants to raise fps
well, he does cos he is loosing some on the cockpit view :s
i dunno maybe they are a bit low res but the difference is so big in other views
I've never really noticed a huge difference between cockpit and wheels-only views as far as fps goes. What kind of frame rates are you seeing with each? And are you running cockpit view with the driver/wheel turned off? That alone saves several hundred polys.
I run in wheels view because the difference is unplayable 20 -25 cockpit view and 45-55 in wheels view. Not that much difference, but on a slower PC, it is the difference of playable or not. Or I should say, competetive or not. 25 FPS is playable, just not competetive. I'd also like a low res cockpit. I don't look at it anyways, but do like the sensation of being in the cockpit much better. Is it possible to modify the dds files to make them less textured and more of a solid color? This might help in the FPS department. I've wanted to, but haven't figured out how to convert dds to a modifiable format and back again. I know you can, have read that you can, but can't figure out how to get back to dds format with any of the utilities I've seen.

Yes. But I don't think it will gain you many FPS. The two texture files for the FZR, for example, combine to make 256KB, hardly taxing for even a slow-ish system. As suggested above, perhaps turn off the wheel and hands. Change shadows quality, turn off wheel reflections, use a plain sky, etc. Small gains, but maybe all you need.
well i didnt want to see this turned into a technical assistance thread, i know i can turn off the driver and wheel, the thing is it only saves 1-2 fps at max, and as there is a big difference from wheel view to cockpit(20-25 to 50-60) i'd like to see somekind of option, it might never happen i know, but you can ask right.
Yea Gunn, they are quite small files. I didn't think about that. But I wonder why I get such a jump as to go from unplayable to enjoyable by turning off the cockpit? I do have just about everything else as minimum as I can. The only thing I have on are ultra important to me, which is mirrors (virtual in wheels view) and the line update for all cars or whatever it is called.

Of course I've posted elsewhere before, but I'm using 8 MB onboard graphics which I know is hosing my eyecandy. Trying to pick up a card, but everytime I get another 20 bucks saved up, the kids gotta go to the doctors or we run out of diapers or something, you know how it is. Hopefully soon, though.

While in the cockpit you have extra 3D modelling to be drawn by your graphics card, textures to be held in memory and CPU cycles to make it all work. When you remove the cockpit (choose another view) you have removed these tasks from your PC so your frame rate improves. I know LFS performs on slower machines with many options turned down or off, but it may be best to get some more CPU or GPU or RAM for the future, or even save for a new PC . I can't see LFS getting any more low-res than it already is. Many people are calling for higher res textures.

Other frame saving tips to try:
Turn off wind (stops trees and flags from being animated).
Turn off trees (track looks bare but is normal otherwise).
Adjust the multiplayer viewing distance (make it shorter).

Hope this helps you out at least a bit.
