FPS Problems
Hi folks, after al long time of trying things i can't get my fps right anymore...I have this machine for a few years and always played LFS with good detail settings and a nice frame-rate. But since a while LFS won't run as before. With 15 people on the starting grid i only have a FPS around 5 or 10 when it used to be 30...

This is my system:

MSI 865 PE Neo 2 mainbord
Intel P4 3.2 GHZ
1024 MB Memory
Gainward Bliss Geforce 7800 GS 512mb AGP
Soundblaster Live

I did a new installment of LFS with all the settings to stock. Then i ran the LFS Benchmark, resutls:

Frames: 4876 - Time: 106000ms - Avg: 46.000 - Min: 29 - Max: 70

Then i tried these settings:

1280x960, Mirror Lod: 0.15, Dust Lod: 0.30, Dynamic Lod: 0.7

And got these results:

Frames: 5777 - Time: 106188ms - Avg: 54.403 - Min: 36 - Max: 81

I don't think these are really bad settings for my system. But as said before when i race with more people it's just crap. Was on the Bug Test Server 2 this afternoon, racing on blackwood in 2nd position with 3 cars behind me and the FPS allready dropped below 30 on the back straight. This can't be good...

I hope somebody can help me.

When was the last time you cleaned your computer out? From my own experience, it seems when things get more dust on them, the heat build up will drop performance. I could just be imagining that though...

Check background tasks. I run an 'aged' computer as well, and background tasks are my #1 culprit for low framerates in LFS. A good defrag is always a good idea as well if it's been a while.

There's a chance that you could have a bad RAM module, but that's not as likely... see if you can find some sort of software that will test your hardware. SiSoft Sandra is a good suite for that.

Hope something in there helps

Thanks for you reply Slopi. I've forgot to mention in my post that i've did a fresh install of Windows XP 2 or 3 weeks ago. This hasn't result in better FPS at all.

I'm doing defrag on all my partitions atm. Maybe that will help a bit.

I'll have a look at that SiSoft Sandra for testing my system.

Thanks again.

Think i've solved the most of it now. Did a defrag on all the disks. Also found out that the temp of the cpu was getting a bit high so i've opened my case.

Tonight racing on the Bug Test Server 2 with around 30 people i didn't had any serious frame drops. The lowest was around 25-30 i believe. Average around 45 with cars around me

I'm happy again
