A skin server?
Hi. I got to thinking the other day (smell the smoke?) Anyways,
when I was a very little kid, my parents were into street rodding
and racing. On Friday nights, they and the other 20somethings like
them would go to the area drive-in restaurants to basically show off
their cars. I imagine that's still done now by the various car clubs out
there. Well, what about doing something like that for LFS? A server that is
there not to really race, but to check out people's skins and discuss techniques and whatever in real time.
The skins that are auto loaded when you enter a server are kept in the
skins X file, right? well people could come into that server and get skins that way without having to go thru all the links and whatever...
I dunno... just a thought
Might make life easier ?? :P

Personally I disabled auto skin download,Got on my nervers seeing that text, yadda yadda skin dloading etc...should be a stealth option :/
I think it's a great idea. I was on a server last night on the city long track just cruising at like 40mph and was having fun. I think "free" server would be great.

Every track pretty much has an area where you can pull to the side and park, that could be a skinning/discussion area, then people can either cruise the track, test setups, or race around it. Hell, there's even a parking lot track.

As long as everyone is civilized and not ramming each other, it should be pretty cool. Maybe we can even form a group and set a website up. I have a decent connection which can usually hold full servers nicely, but maybe we can look into getting a legit server.

Maybe i'm thinking too far ahead but I think it would be a great idea to hang out and spend(waste) the time :P Sometimes I want to mess around in LFS without racing, but doing it in single player gets a little boring.
So basicly you want a show and shine?

Wouldn't that detract from the point of this sim somewhat?
But all you need to do is setup a server on parking lot or something o_O

uhhh yes and no....
See sometimes when I make a skin, I don't know whether to do this or to try that.... I think an interactive server could help in that department.

Dude, When lfs came out you know that the choice of skins for your car was virtually nonexistant... till people started churning out the skins for them.
No I think doing something like this is VERY relevant to this sim. All those skins that are made let's people out there become a little more personalized.
which I think is a good thing overall for racing on this sim. Also, if the skin is auto loaded there... it won't have to be for other races on other servers. That could actually help people with slower stuff in the long run

Also, in real racing, isn't there some sort a concours contest for some of the classes? like with the vintage cars or whatever?

Yeah, the parking lot would be cool. In fact, that would probably be the ideal spot. but I imagine any old track would work.

LOL, a virtual autoshow. That would also help poeple to learn different camera angles and the controls for them when they park their car and "get out and look around".
Oh, you want an ingame chatroom.

The getting tips on painting is a great idea, as I always get stumped for what to do with my skins. Why get anything added. All it needs is a server, and some people with a lot of free time.

And the reason the skins download how they do would be on the most part to save bandwidth, and get playing faster, as you only download what you need.

IMHO it needs a pre-loader like on the replay files. That'd help a lot.
